One of the
privileges of
being the
President of FSMTA
these past two years
is being able to meet and get to know other
state presidents and members from
Southern Division. Traveling to meetings and
the Southern Division competitions, as well
as the national conferences, has afforded
me the opportunity to get to know these
people not only as colleagues in their
state/division capacities, but on a personal
level as well. It reminded me that we belong
to a community much larger than our local,
district, and even state associations. I would
like to use this article to highlight one of my
Southern Division colleagues, Cynthia Jones,
the President of Alabama Music Teachers
Association.
I am sure that most of you are aware of the
horrific damage that the recent tornadoes
have brought upon Alabama. In the
aftermath, I learned that Cynthia had
initiated a Tornado Recovery Fund for the
members of her state. Some of AMTA’s
members were not only affected by the
tornados, but also by flooding, which
resulted in loss of their homes, their
instruments, their music libraries, and,
because of their student’s loss of ability to
pay for lessons, their own income.
I would like to share with you a reply from
Cynthia to an email I sent her in June
inquiring how things were going. Cynthia’s
personal account speaks volumes to the
potential impact we have on our students
that goes well beyond the academic side of
learning music. Cynthia wrote:
President’s
Message by Marc J. Hebda
“I will share with you a couple of
things that have really stuck with me
personally in hearing stories from our
members. One is from a teacher in
Pleasant Grove who lost her home and
both cars; two of her students were
killed, and eight of her students lost
their homes. She said that while many
of her students who have been
affected are not yet able to resume
lessons, some wanted lessons as soon
as possible after the storms. She said
it was because they needed some
semblance of normalcy in their lives,
something familiar and comforting.
Within a couple of weeks she was able
to find a church where she could teach
them; she said that some wanted to
spend much of the lesson time talking
about what they had been through,
and it seems that the special studentteacher
connection provided a very
safe outlet for this.”
She also shared that for weeks after the
storms, the students had to continue
passing by the devastation daily on their way
to school, and that was very tough on them.
Our young people can be very resilient with
the right support from the adults around
them.
After my conversations with Cynthia, I sent a
personal contribution and then decided that
the FSMTA Executive Board should also hear
this story. I presented the information about
the AMTA Tornado Recovery Fund at our
summer board meeting in June. Your board
was very generous in that it approved a
$1,000.00 donation to the Fund. In addition,
MTNA, through the MTNA Foundation Fund,
has provided $5,000.00 in matching funds.
Upon receiving FSMTA’s donation, Cynthia
expressed the following in an email: “Marc,
Please accept my sincere gratitude to you
and the FSMTA board. More than one of the
affected teachers has been moved to tears
to learn of your generosity and support”. In
addition, I received an email from MTNA
Executive Director and CEO, Gary Ingle,
saying, “Thank you for the generosity of the
Florida membership and the Executive
Board toward Alabama and the victims of the
tornado destruction. I know the Alabama
members will be deeply appreciative.” At the
President’s Message
continued from front page
time of this writing they have received contributions
from Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North
Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia MTA’s, many individuals,
and a church in Tennessee who replaced one of the
student’s pianos.
Although we think of our common bond as our membership
in MTNA or Southern Division or FSMTA, it is often a
tragedy like this one that focuses us on what really binds us
together. Florida has been fortunate in the last few years
not to suffer the devastating effects of a widespread
natural disaster. As residents of Florida, we all know that
that can change any day, and we could find ourselves relying
on the generosity of others to rebuild lives. With that in
mind, I encourage each of you to do two things. First, visit
the AMTA website at http://www.almta.org" www.almta.org
and click the “Tornado Recovery Fund/Music Replacement
Project” link for more information. Second, consider
making a personal, tax-deductible donation in support of
the teacher in Pleasant Grove and all of our colleagues in
Alabama. If you choose to do so, checks should be made
payable to AMTA and sent to the AMTA Treasurer Alice
Eaton, 116 Woodland Trail, Madison, AL, 35758. Please write
“Tornado Recovery Fund” in the memo line of your check.
If I may speak on behalf of AMTA, the Greek proverb, “A
gift, though small, is welcome,” seems most appropriate.
Thank you -
It is amazing to think that in the past 10 years, the MTNA
Foundation fund had raised close to $770,000 through the
generosity of our members, state and local associations, and
friends of music in general. Because of that money, MTNA
competitions, grants for professional advancement, and
awards for exemplary professional activities have all been
bestowed on teachers as well as students.
INDIVIDUALS CAN
v Consider becoming a member of the Legacy Society by
making the Foundation the beneficiary of an insurance
policy or a percentage of a retirement plan. Remember
– any amount is acceptable, and the process is very
simple.
v Make students and parents aware of the Foundation
and what it accomplishes. Suggest that donations to
the Foundation make excellent Christmas or end-ofyear
gifts.
v Remember that contributions to the Foundation can be
offered in lieu of flowers to commemorate a death or
celebrate an achievement.
FOUNDATION
by Adrienne LeBlanc, President-Elect
Page 5
v Make a contribution to the MTNA Foundation Fund an
annual gift. Contributions can be earmarked to enhance
a specific endowment or support a specific program.
It is through your generosity that the MTNA Foundation
Fund is able to assist with state affiliate disaster relief
programs. In the president’s message, our president speaks
of Alabama MTA’s efforts in assisting those members
affected by the deadly tornadoes. As it did during the
Hurricane Katrina disaster, the MTNA Foundation Fund has
provided $5000 in matching funds to be added to the more
than $6000 already raised by the Alabama MTA. A donation
can be of assistance in so many ways. Thanks in advance
for your help in making the work of the MTNA Foundation
Fund possible.
And don't forget, it's never too early to be thinking about
taking advantage of the Foundation Fund grants – Teacher
Enrichment, Affiliate, and Program Enrichment. Maybe this
will be the year that you or your association will be a
recipient of what the Foundation Fund offers to its members.

FSMT Foundation Former Executive Director Remembered
by Paulette Kilts, FSMTF President
The Florida State Music Teachers Foundation Executive Board and FSMTA
members extend their heartfelt sympathy to past-President Sue Bentley
Colvert on the death of her beloved husband, Jim.
Rev. Dr. James W. Colvert, Sr. passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011. Jim
faithfully served the Florida State Music Teachers Foundation as it’s only
Executive Director from 1985-1997. During this time he provided
leadership by developing policy guidelines for awards and their
endowments, recommending updates to the Bylaws of the Foundation,
seeking donors, giving guidance on investment of the corpus and
promoting the work of the Foundation.
I remember the sincerity he displayed when presenting the Community
Service Awards to student winners at State Conferences as Foundation
Executive Director. He believed that the Foundation awards should be
Upper Pinellas Music Teachers Association
Celebrates 40th Anniversary
of its Founding 1971-2001
2010-2011 was a special year for
UPMTA as they celebrated their
40th Anniversary of their
founding. Talia Dillahey,
President and Editor of their
monthly newsletters,
incorporated two additional new
articles titled “40th Anniversary
Member Stars” and “40th
Anniversary Facts”. Monthly
biographies of each member
and interesting historical UPMTA facts were featured.
The Association sponsored a special 40th Anniversary Concert by young pianist
Julian Toha who collaborated various creative art forms with his performance.
A Member Appreciation Program was held to recognize members with a
UPMTA Certificate for their number of years of service. A display table with
thirty-eight yearbooks and five scrapbooks was presented. This festivity ended
with a commemorative cake and coffee.
To conclude the year we celebrated with a dinner at Bascom’s Chop House cohosted
by The Music Gallery with guest Becky Barlar, District 9 President,
offering words of congratulations. The President read a letter of
congratulations from Marc Hebda, President of FSMTA. The highlight of the
evening was the presentation of The Lifetime Achievement Award to member
Carol Alexander for 40 years of outstanding service, the UPMTA Yearbook
Sponsor Award to John Phillips, Concert Technician, for 40 years of support,
and the Corporate Community Award to The Music Gallery for 40 years of a
loving relationship enabling UPMTA to grow, prosper and conceive to take on
ambitious events for our students and provide special offerings of professional
development for our teachers.
Arts Awareness
Advocacy
&
Writing about the economy and its effect on Florida Arts seems
to be redundant. I think everyone is aware of the situation and
probably sees very little that can be done. It is easy to forget that
Americans really do have a voice. Many choose not to use their
voice for reasons that are only known to them. I would like to
request that all FSMTA members please:
• Vote! Know your local candidates and how they will vote on
issues that affect Florida.
• Use www.flca.net website (Advocacy) as a source for
candidates’ qualifications or representatives’ addresses.
• E-mail or call your local representative to express your
opinion. (20 phone calls or e-mail messages grab attention
to a bill.)
• Attend a School Board meeting to support the continuation
of arts programs in your county or express displeasure if
programs are being cut.
• Volunteer to join your local ACE Coalition (Arts of a
Complete Education - FAAE) in their efforts to save arts
programs in your community.
• Help make everyone see that children are our future and
the arts are a vital part to their education.
• Don’t wait for others to speak on these issues. Your voice is
important now. Please help!
The Arts makes all of us better human beings. Don’t you think
America needs the arts?

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
