The Team of Contractors
met on site to organize the
four components for this
phase of the work as outlined
in the Procedural Plan
for Preservation.
Turner’s Old Town
House is listed on the National
Register of Historic
Places. It was constructed
in 1831. After receiving a
heavy snow load during the
winter of 2007 and 2008,
serious concerns arose. Inspection
revealed damage
to the framing supports,
back wall, and attached
shed, and the roof supports
had some cracking. With the
This past year voters approved
additional funding
Spring is here at last!
Most of us can't wait to
shake off the winter blues,
to get out into the sunshine,
walk the dog, play
catch with the kids or just
take a stroll in the park.
For homeowners, it's the
first chance to work on
the yard, restore a lush
lawn and, for an increasing
number of gardening
aficionados, create a home
vegetable garden. Inner
city urbanites, even those
with a postage stamp size
yard, have been swept up
by the 'grow your own'
movement.
Victory Gardens, first
introduced by Eleanor
Roosevelt during the Great
War, were the original
community raised gardens.
People were encouraged to
grow their own veggies in
support of the war effort.
Today, raised garden beds
have replaced them as the
eco-friendly solution for
eating healthier without
adding to the carbon footprint
caused by trucking
produce from the grower
to the store.
Thanks to the Frame It
All(TM) raised bed gardening
system, it's nearly
effortless to assemble a
raised garden bed and easy
to maintain with minimal
weeding and back-breaking
“I have a small back
says Nicole from Spring,
Texas. "So I like having an
area set apart from the rest
was a screwdriver and a
Home vegetable growers
control the quality
of the soil, nutrients and
other additives so veggies
and fruits grown in a raised
garden bed taste better,
are healthier and cost
much less than those from
bought at the local market.
Of course, the icing on the
cake is the self-satisfaction
and joy of serving up de-
licious tomatoes and veggies
picked fresh from the
garden.
* Think vertically. Adding
the Veggie Wall trellis
from Frame It All (TM) to a
raised bed vegetable garden
greatly increases the
amount of vertical growing
space and provides
the needed support for
cultivating squash, beans,
tomatoes and other vines.
As well as giving a viable
option for those without
a lot of space, a vertical
growing system also pays
numerous dividends to the
garden itself. Plants on the
vine enjoy greater air circulation
and so are healthier
and not as susceptible to
disease.
"I just put mine together
with my 13 year old son,
and it was a breeze," says
Paula from Valley Forge,
PA. "We had lots of rain
last night, so it was very
easy to get the corners
into the soil. We filled it
with compost, chopped
* Add compost and mulch
to the garden. If weeds are
a gardener's worst enemy,
compost and mulch might
just be a gardener's best
friend. Compost adds any
number of microorganisms
to the soil, strengthening a
plant's roots and enabling it
to pick up more nutrients in
the process. Mulch, meanwhile,
can help keep down
harmful weeds, thereby
reducing the competition
a plant will have for valuable
water and nutrients.
RVHCC Heads Household Hazardous Waste Program
Did you know many
products found in the kitchen,
bath, utility and garage
shelves contain hazardous or
toxic chemicals? Misuse or
improper disposal of these
products can pose a threat
to your health. Long term
or cumulative problems,
such as contamination of
drain fields, septic systems,
and surface and groundwater
can also occur.
River Valley residents
seeking an environmentally
friendly way to dispose of
their hazardous waste can
take advantage of the area’s
free household waste collection
event scheduled for
Saturday, June 12. The
collection will be located
in at two places this year:
at the Roxbury Town Hall
on Route 17 from 8:45 to
9:45am and at the Canton
Fire Station on Route 108
from 11:00 to noon.
The average home can
accumulate as much as 100
pounds of household haz-
ardous waste in the basement
or garage and in storage
closets. Most homes in
the River Valley area contain
three to ten gallons of
these hazardous products.
When improperly disposed
of, household hazardous
waste can create a potential
risk to people and the
environment. Toxic products
carelessly tossed in the
trash, can injure sanitation
workers, damage collection
vehicles, or leak into
the environment. Similarly,
when dumped down
the drain some products
can cause water pollution,
and damage plumbing and
septic systems. Products
poured on the ground or in
the sewer can pollute our
water supply.
Some examples of household
hazardous waste include
cleaners, solvents,
chemical lawn fertilizers,
weed and insect killers,
swimming pool chemicals,
driveway sealers, rat
poison, moth balls and rechargeable
batteries. Look
for the words poison, danger,
corrosive, toxic, volatile,
flammable, caution or
Historical Society Explores Leeds’ One Room Schools
Over 70 people attended
a recent program put on by
the Leeds Historical Society.
The group presented an
overview of the Leeds’
schools, starting in 1801
when the Town voted $200
in support of schools and
divided the town into 9
school districts, with the
intent that no scholar need
travel more than 2 miles to
get to school. Ultimately,
there were 13 districts, including
a shared one with
Greene.
The program focused on
the years between 1935 and
1953, the year the Leeds
Central School opened and
the last of the one room
schools closed. The group
based the presentation
primarily on interviews
with over 40 people who
had gone to the one room
schools. “We really loved
interviewing people,” said
LHS member Pam Bell.
OPAC: Access Your
TPL From Home
Your Turner Public Library
is doing its very best
to keep abreast of advances
in this technological age,
as you know from reading
this column and visiting the
Turner Public Library web
site. There is yet another
step in this direction and it
is a big one.
Now, from your very
own home on your computer,
you can access your
Library’s collection. Here
is how it works: Go to the
TPL web site, turnerpubliclibrary.org.
In the left
column, click on Library
Catalog. There you will be
asked to search the collection
by either title, author,
subject, or anywhere. Type
in your title, author, or subject
and you will be shown
that the movie, book, audio
book, disc, is in or not in
the TPL collection, and that
it is available or not available
at the time of your request.
For example: I went to
the website, turnerpubliclibrary.org
and clicked on Library
Catalog. On the next
screen I clicked on title,
and typed in John Adams.
The screen showed me that
Dear Friends in Buckfi eld, Canton, Hartford and Sumner,
For nearly 20 years I’ve been working in the public sector helping small businesses in our
area. 26,000 of Maine’s 36,000 businesses have 4 employees or less. These are the businesses that
need the chance to grow, prosper and create new jobs.
If you’re ready for change in Maine government, for lower taxes and a better paying jobs, then
I am your candidate. Maine businesses have enough competition from Canada, China and Mexico
without having to battle with Maine bureaucrats. Let me be your voice for working class people from
I humbly ask for your support June 8th.
Weather from the Hill
April review and the winter that wasn’t
As I write this article on
the 29th, April is about to
close out as the warmest in
the ten years of record here
on the Hill, also noteworthy
as it becomes the third
consecutive month to have
well above normal average
temps.
This is quite a swing from
spring seasons over the past
decade that have actually
been a bit cooler than the
long term normals for the
area, The avg. temp. for the
month was 48.7 deg. which
is 5.4 deg. above normal.
The lowest temp. for April
was 30 on the 18th and the
highest was 78 on the 7th.
It was a very topsy-turvy
month, start and finish, with
April arriving on a very
summer-like note and ending
on the cool side. Total
Pot luck supper will be
held on May 29, 2010,
5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at
the Hartford Town Hall.
precip. was below normal
at 2.96" and snowfall was
also below normal at 3.0"
vs. a normal of 4.5".
The average hourly wind
speed was 15% below normal
at 6.1 mph with a peak
gust of just 41 mph on the
11th.
The winter of 2009/2010
was pretty much a flop after
early February, with above
normal temperatures being
the rule. Total seasonal
snowfall this winter was
58.1" or about 72% of the
normal 81". A fairly strong
El Niño pattern set the tone
early last fall and ruled our
weather well into spring.
Complicating the pattern
was a jet stream that
kept the major snow-makers
well south of us, with
a snowy pattern in place
New England Sports Scene
New England
Sports Scene
By: Deb Heroux
Greetings, sports fan.
As boring as late winter
can be in the sports world,
May can be quite the opposite.
All five of our beloved
hometown teams are currently
playing or, in the Patriots
case, practicing. We
are very fortunate in New
England to have such quality
teams. Back in the day
there were some lean times
and I still rooted for them.
That is what being a true
fan is all about.
Auburn-Lewiston Sports
Hall of Fame…
I had the opportunity to
attend the luncheon held to
announce the 27th class of
the Auburn-Lewiston Hall
of Fame. This was great
because I know two of the
men and know of a third.
Five men were inducted on
Sunday, May 2nd – they
are Martin Dow, Mike Fennessey,
Rick Lashua, Barry
Richardson and John Theberge.
Rick and I went to
Edward Little together and
I remember what a good
athlete he was. Barry Richardson’s
Dad owned Dave’s
IGA on top of Goff Hill in
Auburn, where I grew up.
My Dad Jim Heroux was
an Auburn Suburban Little
League coach/umpire in the
1960s and coached Barry
as an all-star. Congratulations
to all on this honor
and their contributions to
Auburn-Lewiston sports.
USM LAC Students Plant Trees
Students from USM’s
Lewiston-Auburn College
recently participated
in a tree planting event on
campus. The project was
part of the class “Environmental
Health,” which
explores issues in environmental
health from both
environmental and human
health issues. The project
coincided with many Earth
Day events held on campus
during the month of
April. A total of 15 sugar
maples were planted on
the grounds that surround
a parking lot on campus.
The trees were provided by
a special arrangement with
Paris Farmers Union.
“The tree planting was
an extra group-conceived
project to enhance the environmental
health of LAC”,
says Associate Dean Blake
Whitaker, who taught the
class. “The students solicited
donations of money for
tree purchases from area
businesses and purchased
the trees themselves. Some
of the trees were donated
by Paris Farmers Union.”
The course in environmental
health comprises
those aspects of human
health and disease that
“We encourage all of our
employees to give to the
United Way through payroll
deduction and feel strongly
that the United Way of the
Tri-Valley Area is the best
way to "give" to assist our
neighbors in need. Our United
Way identifies the areas of
greatest need in our communities,
so giving through them
will ensure that the benefits of
your contributions are being
maximized in helping our
communities.”
-Peter Judkins,
President & CEO,
and controlling factors in
the environment that can
potentially affect human
the season and then practically
every theory I had
goes straight in the tank.
Opening night at Fenway
was Christmas on Easter.
When Pedro came out
from behind the huge flag
on the green monster, he
was a rock star. I have always
loved Pedro and the
Fenway fateful certainly
agreed, with their loud applause.
The best part was
Johnny Pesky and Pedro
embracing and the look of
admiration in both their
eyes was priceless. Very
special indeed and then
five-year-old, You Tube
sensation Joshua Sacco delivers
the famous miracle
speech, but changes it up
with a Yankees Red Sox
theme, it is hysterical and
very cute.
At this writing the Sox
are seventh in the AL with
a .259 team batting average,
11th in pitching with
a team ERA of 4.61 and
fifth in fielding with 15 errors,
four by third baseman
Adrian Beltre and three by
Shortstop Marco Scutaro.
It seems the left side of our
infield has coughed up almost
half of the errors this
season as opposed to Dusty
and Youk on the right side
with ZERO errors so far.
at catcher with 41 base
steal attempts against him
and he has only thrown
out three! Big Papi is off
to another slow start with
only one homer this season
and a .143 batting average.
Terry Francona has finally
started utilizing Mike Lowell
as the DH when a lefthanded
pitcher starts. On a
good note, our captain Jason
Varitek is on fire with
a .323 batting average and
four homeruns so far…
crazy I had him definitely
out to pasture. Playing .500
baseball will not get you
into the playoffs; the Sox
need to step it up and stop
playing that old Abbott and
Costello joke, Who's on
first, what’s on second or
they’ll be in last.
Standing Pat…
As I am writing the Pats
are holding their first mini
camp of 2010. Rookie camp
will give “the hoodie” a
chance to check out what
is coming in. Hopefully he
will unearth the diamond in
the rough.
The NFL draft was held
April 22nd -24th and these
are our top five picks: The
27th pick overall and our
first of this year's draft was
Devin McCourty, a cornerback
out of Rutgers. This to
me was a surprise because
the cornerback position
does not seem to be an im-
Page 9
mediate need of the Pats,
but that is what the hoodie
wants! Our second pick and
the 42nd overall was Rob
Gronkowski, a tight end
out of Arizona. Our third
and the 53rd overall was
Jermaine Cunningham, a
defensive LB out of Florida
and also a teammate of
our fourth pick, Brandon
Spikes, a linebacker who
was chosen 62nd overall.
With the 90th pick of the
draft comes our fifth pick,
wide receiver Taylor Price
out of Ohio. Recent history
has proven that this
organization knows what
it is doing, so who I am to
question their knowledge.
Three months to preseason
football!
Going Green…
The Celtics start the second
round of the playoffs
after disposing of Dwayne
Wade and the Miami Heat
four games to two. Their
next opponents are the
Cleveland Cavaliers. King
James, Shaq and company
had the best record in the
NBA this season with a 61
and 21 record. The Celtics
were 50-32. Lebron James
is arguably the best player
in the NBA; however he
sustained an elbow injury
in the first round and people
are wondering if he is
more hurt then he is letting
on. My take on this series is
the Cavs starting five match
up better. However with
Glenn Davis, Tony Allen,
Rasheed Wallace and Michael
Finley off the bench
we are a deeper team. Let’s
hope Rasheed Wallace
pulls his head out of his
butt and realizes his team is
in the second round of the
playoffs and picks it up. Go
green! Wishin and hopin
and prayin I will be writing
about them next month! Go
green!
What’s Bruin?
The Bruins start the second
round of the playoffs
after disposing of the Buffalo
Sabres. This author
had pretty much thought
the Bruins wouldn’t make
the playoffs and if they
did they would be one and
done. WELL, I was wrong.
With the worst rated offensive
team in the NFL, I
just figured they couldn’t
put the puck in the net. Not
only did they put the puck
in the net, but they also
benefited from the goaltending
skills of 23-year-old
rookie Tuukka Rask. The
new motto being chanted
around New England is it's
“Tuukka Time”. After being
the first seed in last year's
playoffs and losing the first
series, the B’s 2010 team
already has gone further.
We haven’t won the Stanley
cup since the 71-72 season.
The Flyers and Bruins
have a history and this will
be an exciting series, and
don’t forget Marc Savard
is waiting in the wings for
round three…
Kicking it Around…
The New England Revolution
are currently fifth in
the Eastern Conference.
They have so far this season
had injuries that have
affected their great three
and O start and now they
are riding a two game losing
streak. Let’s hope they
can kick it into gear.
This is the New England
Sports Scene for this
month, as seen by this woman.
Dear EarthTalk: I understand
there’s an issue
with the herbicide
atrazine showing up in
dangerous quantities in
drinking water, mostly
throughout the central
U.S. Why is this happening
and what’s being done
about it?
-- Marcus Gerde, Spokane,
WA
Atrazine is an herbicide
that is widely used across
the U.S. and elsewhere to
control both broadleaf and
grassy weeds in large-scale
agricultural operations
growing corn, sorghum,
sugar cane and other foods.
While its use is credited
with increasing agricultural
yields by as much as
six percent, there is a dark
side. The nonprofit Natural
Resources Defense Council
(NRDC) reports that
atrazine exposure has been
shown to impair the reproductive
systems of amphibians
and mammals, and
has been linked to cancer
in both laboratory animals
and humans. Male frogs
exposed to minute doses of
atrazine can develop female
sex characteristics, including
hermaphroditism and
the presence of eggs in the
in U.S. waters, with
the highest levels found in
Indiana, Missouri and Nebraska.
The Southeast also
faces atrazine overload issues.
What irks many public
health advocates is that,
even though study after
study implicates atrazine in
a long list of environmental
and health problems, the
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) still
allows farms to apply 75
million pounds of it each
year. The European Union
banned atrazine in 2004
due to persistent groundwater
pollution there.
Critics of the EPA accuse
the agency of selling out
the health of the American
people so industrial agricultural
companies can
make big profits. Indeed, in
2003, the EPA estimated a
total annual economic impact,
if atrazine were to be
banned, of over $2 billion,
“Because of its application on crops such as corn, sorghum, sugar cane and other
foods, the chemical atrazine is the most commonly detected pesticide or herbicide in
U.S. waters, including drinking water supplies. Atrazine exposure has been shown to
impair the reproductive systems of amphibians and mammals, and has been linked to
cancer in both laboratory animals and humans.” (Photo credit to “Getty Images.”)
including a yield loss plus
increased herbicide cost
averaging $28 per acre. In
2006, the EPA concluded
that triazine herbicides
(such as atrazine) posed
“no harm that would result
to the general U.S. population,
infants, children or
other...consumers.”
In light of the EPA’s refusal
to consider a ban on
atrazine, NRDC and other
groups have taken up the
cause of educating consumers
about the dangers posed
by our national addiction to
dangerous herbicides and
pesticides, and lobbying
elected officials to add their
voices. President Obama
has promised to take a hard
to be seen how long
it will be before any such
review takes place.
Of course, organic farmers
By planting diverse crops,
Keeping Teens Safe During Prom and Graduation
Spring is a much anticipated
time of year for all of
us here in Maine, but it is
especially exciting for our
high school seniors, whose
spring is filled with milestones
and celebrations.
Unfortunately, many of
these traditions have become
viewed as rites of
passage involving alcohol.
But car accidents, sexual
mistakes or misjudgments,
injuries and assaults that
can result from underage
drinking are not how we
want to mark our child’s final
days of high school.
We all want these celebrations
to be joyful and
memorable. Below are
some tips to help you keep
your teen’s prom or graduation
celebration a healthy
and safe one.
Tips for graduation and
prom night:
• Know who is driving,
and encourage seat belt
use.
• If you’re hiring a limousine,
be clear with the
Maine Liquor and
Liability Laws-It
Can Cost You!
Furnishing Liquor to
a Minor Allowing minors
other than your own children
to drink alcohol in
your home (even if you do
not supply the alcohol) is a
criminal offense that may
result in fines from $500
to $2,000 and/or a jail sentence
from 6-12 months. If
an injury or death occurs,
the person responsible for
furnishing the alcohol may
be charged with a felony.
Maine Liquor Liability
Act A non-licensed, social
host (any person who does
not hold a Maine Liquor
License) can be sued for
providing liquor to a minor.
Damages may be awarded
for property damage, bodily
injury, or death caused by
the consumption of liquor
served. The limit on awards
is $250,000 plus unlimited
medical expenses.
Why be concerned about
underage drinking?
The good news is that
most teens do not drink
alcohol, but it does occur
more often and more
heavily than many parents
think. As teens grow older,
the chances that they may
encounter an opportunity
to drink increases. A recent
survey of Maine teens reported:*
45% of high school seniors
had a drink of alcohol
in the past 30 days
26% of high school seniors
had more than five
drinks in a row in the last
two weeks
60% of high school seniors
did not believe they
would be caught by their
parents if they were to drink
without their permission
Some believe that drinking
is a harmless rite of passage,
but alcohol can cause
serious harm to teens. In addition
to drinking and driving
dangers, drinking also
puts minors at increased
risk of alcohol dependence,
increased chances of injury
or death due to fights,
burns, drowning or falls
and can interfere with brain
development.
Talk to your teen about
the risks of alcohol and
listen to their concerns.
Help them understand the
risks and discuss strategies
to keep them safe. Kids
who learn from their parents
about the dangers and
consequences of underage
drinking are less likely
to use and abuse alcohol.
The Central Maine Medical
Center College of Nursing
and Health Professions
graduated 41 students recently
in a ceremony at the
Franco-American Heritage
Center in Lewiston.
Commencement speaker
Rev. James Weathersby of
Riverview Psychiatric Center
in Augusta spoke about
the transfer of knowledge,
culture, and skills that occurs
during a nurse's educational
process, noting
that education begins with
parenting.
“The power was in your
hands. Your job was to take
those young inexperienced
hands and guide them towards
a bright future, beyond
the boo-boos and the
nicks and scrapes of their
curiosity and imagination.
Yours was the job of
aiming their intuition and
their budding knowledge
to higher education; to
say O no’ to their immediate
desires and ‘O yes’ to
their sustaining ambition.
Your job was not easy and
it never was supposed to
be easy," Weathersby said
to the parents attending the
ceremony. He also noted
the educational responsibility
that falls to nursing
instructors. "So often the
teacher and mentor must
look beyond the surface to
the spark within and fan it,
imbue it until it glows with
a life of its own," he said.
He closed his address by
noting "the power of the
hand lies with the graduate,"
adding, "Your hands
join a sacred tradition of
healthcare professionals,
both men and women, who
sought to alleviate suffering,
give comfort to the
pained and the ill, console
and coordinate the care for
wounded humanity. The
profession of skilled nursing
has found itself on the
battlefields of far off lands,
the blighted inner cities
and the illusions of the
Credit Union Helps
Local Animals
Jessica Perron and Sarah Thompson of Community Credit Union, Humane Society
Development Director, Donna Kincer and Executive Director, Steven Dostie.
In April, Community
Credit Union sold “Easter
Eggs” to help raise
money for the Greater
Androscoggin Humane Society.
Thanks to members,
staff and management, $500
was successfully raised.
“The Animal Shelter accepts
lost, stray, and privately
owned animals. Being
a full service shelter
means taking many types
of animals and offering
a variety of programs,”
said Steven Dostie, Shelter
Director of the Greater
Androscoggin Humane Society.
“This donation will
help us to continue to provide
the resources and best
care possible to the many
animals we care for.”
“Every year we sell Easter
Eggs for a community
organization that is near
and dear to the heart of our
“employees,” said Jessica
Perron, Member Services
Supervisor of Community
Credit Union. “I am a true
animal lover, having 9 pets
of my own. All of us at
Community Credit Union
love our animal companions
and understand the
importance they bring to
Oxford County Commissioners’
Position Statement
Treasurer Referendum – June 8, 2010
On Tuesday, June 8,
2010 voters in Oxford
County will be asked by
referendum whether or
not to abolish the position
of elected county treasurer,
and replace it with a
treasurer appointed by the
county commissioners.
We, the county commissioners,
placed this
question on the ballot
after receiving notice in
February that the incumbent,
elected treasurer intended
to step down prior
to the end of her term. We
believe that changing the
selection method of this
position from election to
appointment will benefi t
the county in two ways –
by increasing administrative
effi ciency, and reducing
duplicative wage and
benefi t expenses.
For background, the
treasurer is now elected
to a four-year term, with
the current term expiring
December 31, 2010.
Mary Ann Prue, who was
elected in 2006, recently
resigned from this position.
Per statute, Oxford
County Democrats were
allowed to nominate Ms.
Prue’s replacement as she
held offi ce as a Democrat.
Roy Gedat was nominated
to succeed Prue, and the
Governor subsequently
appointed Mr. Gedat to
the position of treasurer
for the remainder of the
current term.
This question was
placed on the June ballot
pursuant to a 1989 provision
of state law. Upon
learning of Ms. Prue’s intent
to resign, we placed
the question on the ballot
on the grounds that it had
become an open seat and
its elimination would have
the least impact on potential
candidates and their
campaigns. Furthermore,
we feel that we would be
remiss in our responsibility
as commissioners if the
voters and taxpayers of
Oxford County were not
given an opportunity to
weigh in on this subject.
Those opposed to this
proposal claim that the
savings from this action
would be minimal and are
therefore not worth pursuing.
We believe that every
expense line in the budget
must be justifi ed each
year, and that duplication
of costs should be eliminated
wherever possible.
Such is the case here.
Those opposed also
argue that an elected treasurer
provides a watchdog
of public funds that will be
lost if this change occurs.
This argument lacks merit
in that all county fi nancial
records are available for
public inspection at all
times, and county fi nancial
records are independently
audited each year,
with the auditor’s report
always available. Finally,
the county budget committee
comprised of nine
elected selectmen from
towns across the county,
and the three elected commissioners
themselves
will remain a watchdog of
the public’s money.
In closing, we appreciate
the opportunity to
explain this referendum
question, and our rationale
for its support. Thank you
for your consideration.
We look forward to your
feedback on June 8.
Sincerely,
Approved by and
message personally paid
for by the Oxford County
Commissioners with no
tax dollars.
John McDonald
There was a well-to-do
farmer – Murray Seavy –
who lived in the Kennebec
River Valley. Murray had
extensive land holdings,
lots of livestock, and at
the height of planting and
harvest seasons he'd have
several dozen employees
working at his substantial
farm.
When he visited his doctor
one October morning
for a routine checkup, the
doctor – after reviewing his
test results – ordered him to
take a vacation, go to Florida
and rent a cabin somewhere
on a quiet lake. His
doctor made it clear that if
Murray didn't get away, the
pressures of his farm would
put him in his grave before
spring planting.
Well, Murray took the
hint and had someone on
his staff arrange for a one
month vacation. Without
going into details let's just
say he returned home thoroughly
rested, relaxed and
refreshed.
This was back in the
days when we had passenger
trains in Maine, and on
the day of his return a hired
hand was sent to the train
station to pick up the boss.
This particular hired hand
No News Isn't Always Good News
– Alfred – was a hard worker,
but he was a tad 'slow.'
You might say Alfred had
a room upstairs that wasn't
'finished' and all the carpenters
had walked off the job.
After Alfred got the boss'
luggage loaded into the station
wagon, they got in and
headed for the farm.
Thinking to make small
talk, Murray asked Alfred
if there was any news to
report.
"No, sir," Alfred said
abruptly. "Nuthin’ to report!"
A little startled, Murray
said, "But Alfred, I've been
away over a month – thirtyeight
days!"
Alfred took one hand off
the wheel, scratched his
head and said, "Now that
you mention it, sir, there
is something. One of your
dogs died."
"That's too bad," said
Murray. "How'd the dog
die?"
"We figure she died from
eating burnt horse flesh,"
said Alfred.
"BURNT HORSE
FLESH?" said Murray.
"Where would she have
gotten a hold of some burnt
horse flesh?" he asked.
"Oh, well, you remember
that huge barn of yours, sir,"
said Carlton. "Well, that big
ol’ barn burned right to the
ground. Nothin’ left of it
but the fieldstone foundation.
Sad to say, but all the
horses died and when the
fire cooled off, that dog
went over and ate some of
the horse flesh and that's
what killed the dog."
www.centralmainetoday.com
"My BARN burned
down?" Murray cried in
horror. "How did my barn
catch on fire?"
"We figure it must have
been a spark that flew over
from the house that caused
the barn to catch fire and go
up," said Alfred.
"A spark from the
HOUSE?" Murray asked,
now getting a little queasy.
"Yes, sir," said Alfred, casually,
"your house burned
right to the granite foundation."
"How did my house catch
on fire," said Murray, now
almost in tears.
"Well, sir, it was the candles
we had in the parlor
that done it. One of the candles
tipped over, lit onto the
curtains and soon the whole
house was in flames. A
spark flew over to the barn,
the barn caught fire, burned
to the ground, all the horses
died before we could rescue
them and when the fire
cooled off the dog ate some
of that horse flesh and that's
what killed that dog," Alfred
concluded.
"What were the candles
doing in the parlor? Everyone
knows I don't allow
candles in that front room!"
said Murray.
"The candles was around
the coffin, sir," said Alfred.
"COFFIN?" shrieked
Murray. "Who died?"
"Your mother-in-law
died, sir. We was having the
wake in the parlor with the
off the dog ate some of the
horse flesh - and that's what
killed your dog," said Alfred,
proud to have remembered
all the details.
Bewildered, Murray
asked, "Did they ever figure
out what my mother-inlaw
died of?"
"We not exactly sure, sir,
but we know she dropped
dead after learning that
your wife ran off with one
of the new stable boys,"
said Alfred.
"Other than that, sir, it's
Women In Business
Holt, Your Local Auto &
Home Insurance Specialist
For Lisa Holt of MetLife Auto &
Home, protecting the needs of the people
of Livermore is personal. Lisa was born
and raised in Livermore, and still lives
there today, along with her husband Mark
and daughter Mikala. After working 20
years for Hannaford, Lisa was ready for a
change, so in 2004 she became a personal
marketing assistant for a local MetLife life
insurance agent, and spent four years learning
the ropes. That’s where she discovered
her true calling, and in May 2008, decided
to venture out on her own, specializing in
property and casualty personal lines insurance.
One year later, she joined forces with
another local business woman, Heidi Conant,
to open their own insurance office.
Both Lisa and Heidi pride themselves
in providing excellent customer service,
and make sure that someone is always in
the office for customers to stop in and talk
with, or simply call. But more than that,
Lisa wants to make sure that her customers
are educated and truly understand their
policies. “I want customers to know what
their limits are, what’s covered, and what’s
not,” she explains. “I want people to know
how to protect themselves against the unexpected
events that happen in life.”
For Lisa, it’s all about finding the needs
and the right package that fits each individual
and helps to protect them from the
“what ifs” in life. In fact, she makes it a
point to go the extra mile, and pick up the
phone and call her customers at renewal
time to see how they’re doing and what’s
changed in their lives.
Although Lisa’s focus is on auto and
home insurance, she also provides insurance
coverage for boats, motorcycles,
snowmobiles, campers, and all recreational
vehicles, as well as insurance coverage for
renters, condo owners, and landlords. She
also works with larger companies such as
CMMC, US Postal Service, McKesson,
and LL Bean to offer group discounts on
insurance for eligible individuals and employees.
She recently completed an intensive
training session offered by MetLife
that focused on providing the best protection
for a person’s personal assets, and in
January 2010 became a licensed life insur-
about teen driving, distracted driving, fingerprinting,
and fire and boating safety. She
also sponsors a local children’s basketball
is part of a longstanding MetLife tradition
of giving back to the communities where
its representatives live and work. This local
dedication is one of the many reasons
that Heidi’s proud to be a sales agent for
MetLife Auto & Home, which was established
in 1972 and is now the 13th largest
The throw to Tripp 3rd baseman Gabe Seeley was in time for this out on the Mount
Ararat runner. The Ararat 7th grade boys’ team did manage enough "safe" calls
however to take the game from the Tigers of Tripp Middle School in Turner. Tiger
catcher Mitchell Davis was credited with 2 hits in the 2-12 loss. (Photo by Bill Van
