FA Jazz Successfully Defends State Instrumental Titles
Fryeburg Academy musicians
continued their
winning ways at the Maine
State Instrumental Jazz
Festival held at South Portland
High School, March
Foundation Challenge Grant
The Bridgton Recreation
Advancement Group
is very proud to announce
it has met the challenge
put forth by The Kendall
C. and Anna Ham Charitable
Foundation, to raise
$50,000.00 in cash and
pledges towards the Bridgton
Community Recreation
Complex. The Ham Foundation
matched the funds
raised. This grant is testament
to the incredibly generous
Ham Foundation and
the loyal BRAG volunteers
that have worked for 10
years to provide the Town
of Bridgton with a state of
the art recreation complex.
The Kendall C. and Anna
Ham Charitable Foundation
has been a significant part
of many important projects
in the Mount Washington
Valley and Bridgton area.
Their investment in Bridgton’s
future also includes a
new bridge into Pondicherry
Park for Stevens Brook
Elementary Students.
This grant allows BRAG
to hit the ground running
this spring. As soon as
Jon Dana (drums) and
Kelsey Sheehan (bass guitar),
earned a high score of
both receiving Outstanding
Musicianship trophies at the
conditions allow, Project
Manager Jim Quinn will
organize the many contractors
that have expressed
an interest in donating
equipment and labor to the
project located on BRAG
way just east of the Bridgton
Drive-In. The cleared
property now needs stumping,
leveling, drainage and
seeding. Last year’s high
rain total prohibited BRAG
from this phase as there are
strict DEP guidelines to follow.
to their past, Bridgton is
courageously taking steps
to provide a well rounded
center of commerce, recreation
Multiple Combo Division.
On Saturday, schools
returned for the Big Band
competition. Bands performed
throughout the day
with three schools per division
qualifying for the
night finals. Fryeburg advanced
along with Cape
Elizabeth and Nokomis
High Schools, and Devin
LaCasce was once again
awarded an Outstanding
Musicianship trophy. After
an amazing performance,
the end result was Cape
Elizabeth, third, Nokomis,
second, and Fryeburg
Academy, first. The seventeen
piece band with only
six returning members from
last year’s State championship
group, were at the top
of their game and brought
the trophy home again! “I
John McDonald
So there I was the other
night at a fancy corporate
banquet in the mid-coast
region, waiting to provide
the evening’s entertainment,
when the conversation at my
table turned to storytelling.
That's when this fella from
Massachusetts – with an accent
so thick you could've
cut and stacked it like cordwood
– attempted to tell one
of my Down East stories.
Within seconds this Son
of the Commonwealth had
the story so mangled and
mutilated that it became too
painful for me to listen. Finally
in desperation he turns
to me and says: “Have you
ever heard that story, John?
Is that more or less how it
goes?"
It's been suggested that
warning labels be placed
on all Maine humor tapes
and CDs, warning amateurs
about the dangers of attempting
to tell these seemingly
simple stories at home.
I told my tablemate that
I knew the story well, and
when asked to tell it I began
by straightening out some of
the more dented details.
I'll tell the story here if you
promise not to try to retell it
without supervision.
In the story Tewkey Merrill
is sitting on his front porch
reading his newspaper when
a car comes tearing around
the corner by his house and
stops. A man jumps from the
car, runs up onto the porch
and frantically asks Tewkey
for directions to Bangor.
Realizing the fella is in a
hurry, Tewkey tries his best
to move him right along.
“You want to take this road
out of town about five miles
and you're gonna' come to a
fork in the road..."
“Does it make any difference
which way I go at
the fork?" the stranger asks,
thinking he'll speed things
up. “Not to me, it don't,"
Tewkey says, honestly.
The stranger decides to
just stand there and listen.
“You take a left at that
fork and after you go another
two miles you'll see a big,
red barn... No, come to think
of it, it's a green barn... Two
miles after that left at the
fork in the road you'll see a
big, green barn…”
Tewkey pauses again to
think, while the stranger taps
his foot, waiting.
“Now that I've colored
the barn green I realize it's
not on the left side but on
the right side," says Tewkey.
"So, remember - two miles
after the left at the fork in
the road on your right hand
side you're going see a big,
green…”
Another long pause, more
thinking, stranger is fit to be
tied...
“For the last eight years
that barn's been nothing but
trouble," Tewkey finally
said. “Eight years ago the
fella who owns that barn decided
to paint it even though
it didn't need painting. In the
middle of the job he gets a
call from his daughter in
Canton, Ohio who just had
her first baby.
“Well, he and mother pack
up and fly to Canton to see
their new grandchild. They
stay out there for months,
visiting. By the time they
Don’t Try This at Home
got back he couldn't remember
whether his barn was
red and he'd been painting
it green, or she was green
and he'd been painting it red.
What's worse, he couldn't
find any of the paint.
“His neighbor, Frank Farron,
said, 'Just wait 'til one
side starts peeling. Whatever
side peels first is probably
the side you painted
first, so just paint that side
the other color.'
“Fella agreed that was the
answer. Trouble is, till he
finishes painting his barn I
can't remember - when giving
directions - whether his
barn is the red barn on the
left heading north or she's
the green barn on the right
heading south.
“But I know for sure that
two miles after the left at
the fork in the road on either
your left or right hand side
I guarantee you're going to
see a big red or green barn,"
Tewkey said all emphatic.
“Then what do I do?" the
stranger asked.
“Nothin.'" said Tewkey.
"You see it and just go sailing
by.”
Well, by now the stranger
concluded that he had
picked the last person in
Maine to ask for directions
but by then it was too late.
From around the same
corner came a deputy sheriff
with siren wailing and
all lights blazing. He cut off
the stranger's car, came up
on the porch, slapped some
cuffs to this stranger and
arrested him on the spot. It
was quite dramatic.
It seems this fella had
just robbed a bank in Union
and was trying to make a
getaway to Rockland, and
Tewkey Merrill managed
to stop this fella armed with
As Downeaster Tink Billings says:
"Ain't he some funny!"
nothing more than his index
finger and his colorful directions.
Well, they hauled the fella
off to jail and under intense
questioning by the department's
elite criminal division
they finally wrung it out of
him: He had been in that very
www.centralmainetoday.com
town about eight years previous
and the only mischief
he managed to get into was
- he broke into somebody’s
big red and green barn and
made-off with about twenty
gallons of paint.
Golf Tournament for Beth Coffin
Beth Coffin is a delightful
24-year-old young
lady from West Paris, who
was diagnosed with Spinal
Muscular Atrophy at
6 months old. It is a crippling
disease and is incurable.
It attacks nerve cells
in the spine, causing weakness
and atrophy of the
voluntary muscles. She is
completely crippled, except
for the use of her two
index fingers. She weighs
54 pounds. She is wheel
chair bound and sleeps in
an iron lung. She also has
two blood diseases: Pernicious
Anemia and Von
Willebrand type I.
Beth is one of the most
delightful and bright
young ladies you will
ever meet. She is quick to
laugh and joke, even with
all that she suffers from.
She laughs about enjoying
her "fast" wheelchair
and how her mother can
hardly keep up with her
when they go to Walmart!
Clearly, the sparkle in her
eyes reflects the love that
she has for life. She talks
about having clinically
died 3 times. She takes no
time for granted. Though
she may be physically
weakened with illness,
her mind and heart remain
strong. She attends fund
raiser after fund raiser and
works tirelessly to help
raise money for a home fit
for her to live in.
Her mother, Bonita
Coffin, cares for her 24
hours a day with the loving
help from her partner
The Stephens
Connection
Connecting Stephens Memorial Hospital and Western Maine Health to the Communities We Serve
Spring 2010 Issue 7
Sisters Welcome Babies Two Weeks Apart -
with a Little Help from The Family Birthplace
Courtney Culbert, of Bethel, was surprised and excited to find out she was
pregnant with her first child, and due in May of 2009. Shortly after she
found out, her sister, Jessica Fitts, of Oxford, discovered she was going to
welcome baby number two into her family - just a month after Courtney had
her baby.
As it would turn out, cousins Emma and Anna were born only 2 weeks apart,
both in June 2009 at the Family Birthplace at Stephens Memorial Hospital,
delivered by Dr. Gregory Hardy of Western Maine OB/GYN.
Watching the girls together, you note how similar they are to their mothers;
and as sisters, Courtney and Jessica also have similarities, as well as differences.
The same can be said for their experiences at the Birthplace. However,
while the experiences were different, both women state with certainty what a
wonderful experience it was to give birth at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
Courtney’s Story
By Courtney’s account she had a healthy, uneventful pregnancy, except that
little Emma wanted to stay in a week past her due date, finally gracing the
world on June 4th. After delivery, Courtney experienced a complication and
needed to go to the Operating Room. For someone who had never stayed
overnight in a hospital, this was a scary experience. Her confidence grew
when Dr. Hardy explained everything from the anesthesia to the procedure to
her. The Birthplace nurses took charge of helping Emma and her dad, Mark,
get to know one another while Courtney was in the OR.
With this unexpected event under her belt, Courtney was back in her room
with her family. She shares that the nurses were fabulous in helping Mark
with care and showing him how to bathe and diaper Emma, as Courtney
couldn’t get out of bed. Both she and Mark were happy with the wonderful
food, the personalized care, and glad that the nurses were helpful filtering visitors
and making sure she was able to get enough rest.
“For my first hospital experience it was very pleasant. I loved being able to
labor in the tub, all of the nurses explained things very well, and made sure
Quality, Scope of Services & Efficiency
MaineHealth, the state’s largest integrated healthcare delivery network, has
been ranked among the nation’s best performing healthcare systems for the
fourth year in a row. Based on an annual survey conducted by SDI, a healthcare
market insight and analytics firm, MaineHealth’s ranking stands at 26, up
from 59 in the 2009 survey.
Notably, MaineHealth was ranked third in a listing of the top ten healthcare
systems in the Northeast.
to check in and
see if we had
questions after
we left.”
Jessica’s Story
Already mom to a 4-year-old boy, Jessica was comfortable being pregnant
and knew how she envisioned her delivery. She was planning to deliver at the
same hospital where she had her son. However, she and her husband, Ernie,
decided it would be nice if she could deliver closer to home and family, and
working at SMH, she knows firsthand how “amazing” the Birthplace nurses
and the physicians at Western Maine OB/GYN.
Jessica shares that she had a great first experience, however, every delivery is
different, and she still didn’t know what to expect when she went into labor on
June 19th. The nurses at the Birthplace, “made me feel confident during my
labor, and after the birth of Anna gave us the space to be a family and helped
my son feel comfortable coming in to see his new sister.”
The rotation with which the Western Maine OB/GYN physicians see OB
patients increased Jessica’s comfort level as well. “During my pregnancy, I got
to see all 3 of the physicians that could potentially be delivering Anna. They
all knew my case, and I felt at ease with that when I went into labor.”
Though they had different experiences, the sisters agree that the care at the
Birthplace was amazing, the nurses and doctors accessible for questions, and
that they each went home with a beautiful little girl.
The MaineHealth member organization, of which Stephens Memorial
Hospital and Maine Medical Center are two of the 11 members, is honored
and proud of the integrated health network ranking. “We have done a great
deal of work to ensure our health system maximizes and shares our resources
throughout our MaineHealth family and beyond,” said Bill Caron, president
of MaineHealth. He added, “While we greatly appreciate the recognition, the
value for the average Maine citizen is that MaineHealth providers have been
recognized for high-quality healthcare that’s delivered efficiently.”
Safer Medication Practices
Kathy Bonney, RN, MSN - Vice President of Performance Improvement
Using the safest medication practices to prevent medication-related errors is
important to us. The Institute of Medicine’s “To Err is Human” report 1 noted
that “Medication-related errors occur frequently in hospitals; not all result in
actual harm, but those that do are costly.” The report went on to estimate
that the “increased hospital costs alone of preventable adverse drug events
affecting inpatients are about $2 billion for the nation as a whole.” Delivering
the right medication to the right patient, in the right dose, by the right route
and at the right time seems, on the surface, to be simple. However, it is an
extremely complex process which makes it prone to problems and errors. Just
a few factors that make it complex are:
• Every person is unique. Each has a unique response to medications and a
unique medication list which may include over the counter medications and
herbal supplements.
• Medications can interact with other medications, supplements and food.
• There are thousands of medications available.
• Many names of medications look and sound alike.
• More than one doctor may be involved in the care of a patient and may be
ordering medications.
• Use of abbreviations and handwriting can make a medication order unclear.
Our Medication Systems Improvement, Pharmacy and Therapeutics and Information
Technology Committees are made up of doctors, nurses, ward secretaries,
pharmacists, information technology staff and other clinical support
staff who continuously work to make medication practices safer. We evaluate
our hospital against numerous national safe practice guidelines from organizations
such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS), the
Joint Commission, the National Quality Forum, and the Institute for Safe
Medication Practices. We also evaluate our practices and outcomes through
ongoing data collection.
We are proud of the fact that we are using the latest technology, support
services and other safe practices to reduce medication errors. More than 75%
of our inpatient medication orders are entered into the computer by doctors.
This helps prevent confusion that might be caused by illegible handwriting or
use of abbreviations. The other major advantage to using computer software
is the alerts it generates to the doctor. Alerts include medication interactions,
patient allergies and doses that may be too high. Our doctors’ computerized
Culture Changes at Market Square
When most people think of a nursing home, they don’t think of a comfortable
atmosphere where cats roam free and residents congregate in
social areas to play games, chat, and watch TV. However, that is exactly
the way residents at Market Square Health Care Center live every day
thanks to the hard work of staff to undertake a culture change at the
nursing home.
Market Square staff has been implementing changes over the past year to
make residents feel more like they are in homey atmosphere. Managers
have taken ideas that have been in the coffers for a long time, as well as
suggestions from surveys with residents to implement positive changes.
The first major change to the daily
lives of residents was the building
of a kitchenette in their multipurpose
room, which also serves as
the cafeteria for many. With this
addition, the staff is able to offer
made to order toast selections along
with the standard breakfast. This
affords residents a daily choice with
their breakfast, something most people would take for granted living
at home. Bonnie McAllister, Dietary Director, notes that one of the
biggest advantages to this is actually the smell of the toast cooking. “It
helps to enhance peoples appetites so they are hungry for breakfast!”
Residents have been very accepting of the change, staff have adapted to
make the most out of the changes to the routine, and find that happier
residents make all the change worth while.
McAllister says with this new “short order” type of atmosphere in the
dining hall and the addition of beverage choices on the spot there is less
waste, more enjoyment of the residents, and a surprising upsurge in the
drinking of hot cocoa at the Center!
www.centralmainetoday.com
order entry rates are reviewed monthly, with the goal to constantly improve
our rate.
We have 24-hour pharmacy coverage. While we do not have a pharmacist
at the hospital during the night, we use a “remote” pharmacy service that is
staffed by Maine pharmacists. (We can also call in a hospital pharmacist if
needed.) This ensures that inpatient medication orders are always reviewed
by a pharmacist with the goal to help catch errors before a medication is given
to a patient.
The inpatient computerized medication orders “flow” into our automated
medication dispensing cabinets. The nurse
selects the medication from the cabinet
drawer that opens up based on the medication
order. The nurse then takes the medication
to the patient’s room (shown at right)
and uses a scanner to scan the medication
and the patient’s identification band. The
computer uses this scanned information to
make sure that the right patient, medication, dose, route and time matches the
medication order.
We also have “smart” intravenous pumps that alert nurses if too much medication
or fluid has been programmed into the pump in error and will not start
until the information has been corrected.
Lastly, but most importantly, we recognize that ensuring medication safety is
a team effort. Key team members are the patient and their support person(s).
Our safe medication practice starts by creating an accurate list of medications,
herbal supplements and allergies. We encourage everyone to keep an accurate
list in their wallet or purse in case of an emergency and to bring medications
in their original bottles if there is a chance of being seen in the Emergency
Room or admitted to the hospital. This helps to create the most accurate list.
We also want patients and their support persons to speak-up if they have any
questions about their medications or think that we may be making an error.
This help is vital to keep our medication system as safe as possible.
Here are some web addresses for more information about medication safety:
Shirley Toncer
In spite of the heavy taxes
the British placed on tea, it
was the favored drink in colonial
America.
On December 16, 1773,
to protest those high taxes
imposed by England, some
men dressed up like Indians
and dumped a whole shipment
of tea overboard in
Boston Harbor. That protest
is now known as the Boston
Tea Party.
Iced tea was unknown in
early America. That beverage
first became popular in
Dottie Dymples – Coffee, Tea or Milk
1903 at the St. Louis State
Fair where it was so warm
that no one wanted hot tea.
Another innovation came in
1904 when Thomas Sullivan
introduced the tea bag. And
although purists may not approve,
instant tea can now
be found in most grocery
stores.
Tea doesn’t grow in the
USA and most of our tea
comes from Asia.
In the summer time you
might see a big jar of water
with tea bags sitting in the
sun on the porch to make
sun tea. Sun Tea
When you see the color
you want, add sugar
Lemon or any fruit
of your liking
Coffee
With the high tax on tea,
coffee became a popular alternative.
In 1860 George Huntington
and George Gilman
formed the American Coffee
Corporation, buying coffee
beans directly off the ship
from Brazil, which is the
world's largest producer of
coffee. The price of coffee
went from $2.00 a pound to
25 cents.
In 1876 James Sanborn
and Caleb Chase formed
the Chase and Sanborn Co.,
which ground coffee and put
it into cans.
In 1880 Joel Cheek put
together a blend of coffee
beans that was served at the
Maxwell House in Nashville,
Tennessee. Supposedly
after drinking a cup of this
brew, Theodore Roosevelt
made the statement, “Good
to the Best Drop." Maxwell
Ask the Trainer Golf
Conditioning
Jodi Cornelio
We all know the importance
of proper technique
if you want to be a good
golfer, but there are other
pieces to this that can help
your game and take you to
the big tournament win and
the best golf of your life.
Basic components of mental
and physical conditioning
can improve your golf
game, your fitness level,
mental stamina and reduce
your risk of injury.
The areas to focus on
are core strength for stability,
lower body strength and
flexibility for power and
distance. Simple exercises
and stretches can address
some of these areas, and of
course yoga can enhance
all of these areas, including
mental stamina.
In this article let’s just focus
on core and lower body
strength. The muscles of the
core are the powerhouse
and the foundation of your
golf swing, and lower body
strength assists the core in
this function. Along with
helping you with more endurance
to carry your body
around the course, core and
lower body strength also
helps you with precision
and control of your short
game. Core exercises focus
primarily on the mid section
of the body; therefore it is
referred to as the foundation
of all movement. By
midsection of your body I
am referring to abdominal
muscles, lower back, (the
most common area for golf
injuries) and the hips. Because
there are many other
muscles attached to these
areas, it’s important to incorporate
them in your conditioning.
Ok, let’s get to work. If
you are just starting out with
your conditioning, here are
some guidelines.
Start any conditioning
program with a warm up.
This can be marching in
place for 5 minutes. Incorporating
some lower body
strength exercises like lunges
and or squats is always
a good idea, for this gets
some of the biggest muscles
in your body working
at warming your body and
burning calories. These are
also the supporting muscles
of your core, i.e. “the foundation
of movement.”
Perform several abdominal
exercises. Start slow and
with control, baby steps and
increase repetitions once
you feel comfortable to do
so. You should never feel
pain in your back or neck
when performing abdominal
or core exercises. If you
do feel pain, stop immediately;
you are either doing
too many reps or lacking
proper form.
One of my favorite exercises
for abdominal strength
is the Bicycle Crunch. Lie
on your back, hands behind
your head and criss-cross
elbow to knee as if you are
riding a bike. Start with directing
your feet towards
the sky until you feel comfortable
enough to gradually
lower your feet towards the
floor for more of a challenge.
The One Hundred is one
of the most popular exercises
in Pilates core strengthening.
Lie flat on your back
with your knees bent and
feet flat on the floor, roll
your upper body up until
your shoulder blades are
barely touching the floor,
arms extended to the sides
of your body and pull your
stomach muscles in. Hold
and exhale. For more of a
challenge begin to extend
your legs off the ground and
lengthen. Never let your
lower back lift off the floor.
The one hundred is called
the one hundred because the
goal is to hold your legs in
this position for one hundred
seconds.
Because most men do not
typically like to perform
exercises with their legs elevated,
(it’s tougher for them
due to the positioning of the
hip flexor muscles), I will
give you one standing core
exercise.
Standing Knee Ups:
Stand in an upright position,
shoulders back, stomach
pulled in (“Military
stance”). Bring one knee
into your chest slowly and
in control while exhaling
and sucking your abs in.
Repeat on one side 10-20
times, and then move to the
other side.
It’s very important to note
that after performing any
abdominal exercises, you
must strengthen and stretch
your back to prevent injury
and maintain body balance.
Lie on your stomach; raise
your legs and thighs off the
ground by squeezing the
muscles in your low back
and butt. Gently kick your
feet as if you were swimming.
Keep your spine
straight and head on the
floor. After 10-20 kicks,
push your body off the floor
and sit on your heels, placing
your head back on the floor.
This is the Child Pose and
is a good way to end your
golf conditioning routine.
This whole routine should
take you 10-20 minutes and
should be performed 3-5
times a week.
Good luck to you and
may you have a healthy and
safe golf season with lots of
powerful drives.
way to keep milk fresh, there
“Milk Poisoning.” In fact,
Abraham Lincoln's mother
In the late 19th century,
The Healthy
Geezer
By Fred Cicetti
Q. Do men get osteoporosis?
Yes, men do get osteoporosis,
but women are at
greater risk.
Osteoporosis, or porous
bone, is a disease
characterized by low
bone mass and structural
deterioration of bone tissue.
This condition creates
an increased risk of
fractures.
Osteoporosis is a major
public health threat for 44
million Americans; about
68 percent of them are
women. One out of every
two women and one
in four men over 50 will
have an osteoporosisrelated
fracture in their
lifetime.
Our bodies remove old
bone and replace it with
new bone. During our
growth stage, new bone
is added faster than old
bone is removed. We hit
peak bone mass around
age 30. After that age, we
lose more bone than we
form.
Who is at risk of getting
osteoporosis?
The chances are greater
if you are a woman. Women
have less bone tissue
and lose bone faster than
men because of changes
from menopause. Small,
thin-boned women are at
greater risk. Caucasian
and Asian women are
at highest risk. Age is a
major risk factor because
bones become thinner
and weaker as you age.
Heredity can also increase
fracture risk.
Low calcium intake
appears to be associated
with bone loss. Good
sources of calcium include
low-fat dairy products,
dark-green leafy
vegetables, almonds, and
foods fortified with calcium,
such as orange juice.
Some people may need
to take a calcium supplement.
Vitamin D plays an
important role in calcium
absorption and in bone
health. It is made in the
skin through exposure to
sunlight. Vitamin D pro-
duction decreases in the
elderly, in people who
are housebound, and for
people in general during
the winter. Depending on
your situation, you may
need to take vitamin D
supplements.
Bone responds to exercise
by becoming stronger.
Weight-bearing exercise
is the best for your
bones. Get off the sofa.
Women who smoke
have lower levels of estrogen
compared to nonsmokers,
and they often
go through menopause
earlier. Smokers also may
absorb less calcium from
their diets. Quit.
Regular consumption
of 2 to 3 ounces a day of
alcohol may be damaging
to the skeleton. Heavy
drinkers are more prone
to bone loss and fractures,
because of poor nutrition
and increased risk of falling.
Quit or, at least, cut
down.
People may not know
they have osteoporosis
until their bones become
so weak that a bump or
fall causes a hip to fracture
or a vertebra to collapse.
See your doctor for
a check-up.
Following a comprehensive
medical assessment,
your doctor may
recommend that you
have your bone mass
measured. A bone mineral
density (BMD) test is
the best way to determine
your bone health. BMD
tests can identify osteoporosis,
determine your risk
for fractures, and measure
your response to osteoporosis
treatment. The
most widely recognized
bone mineral density test
is called a dual-energy
x-ray absorptiometry or
DXA test.
A comprehensive osteoporosis
treatment program
includes a focus on
proper nutrition, exercise,
and safety issues to
prevent falls that may result
in fractures. In addition,
your physician may
prescribe a medication to
slow or stop bone loss,
increase bone density,
and reduce fracture risk.
From the desk of Connie Jones, Director of Community Services…
Getting Ready for the Big 60
When I turned 35, I received my first
shock of aging – I looked down at my
hands and saw my mother’s hands!
When I turned 40, I threw myself a big
Over the Hill party, all dressed in black.
When I turned 50, I truly celebrated, because I realized
by then that life was just getting really good.
Now it’s almost time for 60. This feels very different.
When I was a kid, 60 was old. Life expectancy wasn’t
as high, and people still looked at retirement as the
first step on the downward slope towards death, and it
was time to slow down, take it easy and find a rocking
chair.
Now, with that old perception still playing its tape in
my head, I work to stop the tape and record a new one.
“The new 60 is the old 50.” “60’s is just the beginning
of middle age.” “It’s a great time to re-tool, re-invent
and start the next 1/3 of your life.”
Honestly, I struggle with switching tapes. My head
says, “Connie, embrace the New 60.” But there are
days when my body says, “Connie, get real, look at
your white hair, feel those creaky knees, remember
you can’t eat a big meal at 8 PM anymore, because
you stay up all night regretting it!”
Which tape wins? I’m stating it right out loud, right
here and now, that I’ve decided to embrace the New
60. We’re pioneers in this longevity game – I like new
challenges. So I’m going for it. My husband and I
already worked on the reinventing part – left our
comfort zone, moved back to Maine, built a house and
got a new job. My husband has gone back to school to
learn a new career.
And I’ve decided that I’m going to start 60 at the Top
of My Game. That means sprucing up my body,
making sure I’m as healthy as I can be to enter this
new decade. Finally I’m back in a good fitness routine,
I’m exercising my brain with new and complex things,
I’m working on creating a new visual tape that says
portions of food are now ½ the size they were when I
was 20. I spend more time at my stress-elimination
spot – the ocean. I’m up to date on annual physical, flu
shot, colonoscopy, dental exams, eye exam…
Cheers to 60! I’m ready – let’s go!
Weston-Chandler Funeral Home
Joins Online Obituary Network
Weston-Chandler Funeral
Home, serving families
since 1993 in the Oxford
Hills area, Minot, Poland
and Mechanic Falls has become
the community’s best
source for online obituary
information. Thanks to a recent
investment in the latest
technology, www.westonchandler.com
now offers
visitors access to the largest
online obituary network in
North America, made possible
by the collaboration
of hundreds of newspaper
and funeral home websites
across the US and Canada.
“As more and more individuals
turn to the web to
seek information, communicate,
and interact with one
another, we understand that
having global access to information
about services for
families and friends is essential,”
says Dana Chandler.
Make-A-Wish Recipient
Donates 8 Years Later
In February, 2002 an 18year-old
boy named Adam
from Saco was fortunate to
have overcome a rare form
of cancer and was granted
a Make-A-Wish trip to ski
with Shane McConkey at
Squaw Valley USA in Tahoe.
Eight years later, Adam
reflects on the fact that his
wish was the impetus for a
spectacular friendship with
Shane and a personal building
block to a practice of
giving back to the community.
If he were to title the story
of what has happened to him
over the past 8 years, he’d
call it “Full Circle.”
“I will never forget the
incredible adrenaline surge I
felt when I first met my skiing
hero in front of the Cable
Car at Squaw Valley USA,”
said Adam Baillargeon, now
26, of Truckee, Cal. “He
showed me the ropes as well
as introduced me to a venerable
‘who’s who’ of pro
skiers. Words like surreal
and unbelievable don’t do
enough justice to quantify
how great it was to ski with
Shane.”
Knowing that group of
‘who’s who’ pro skiers
helped Adam decide that,
when it came time, he’d like
to have a career connected
Our obituary search engine
on www.westonchandler.
com will provide all listings
for obituaries posted on this
vast online network, giving
visitors the information they
seek quickly and easily.
Based on their association
with this network, Weston-
Chandler Funeral Home
can now provide families
with online obituaries for
their loved ones that can be
shared with friends around
the globe. Additionally,
families can use robust multimedia
features of the web
to enhance the way that they
memorialize their loved
ones. With the Internet, families
have a greater opportunity
create vivid, meaningful
memorials for their loved
ones and to share those online
tributes with others living
around the world.
Two memorialization
to the winter action sports
world.
Shane and Adam stayed
in touch through the years
and Adam visited him and
his family in 2004, before
he graduated college. Upon
graduation in 2007, Shane
and Adam exchanged emails
and phone calls, which is
how Adam learned of an
opening at Squaw Valley
USA.
“Shane was not only instrumental
in how he motivated
me to continue to
get healthy once I was in
remission from cancer; he
also helped me land a job
at Squaw and continued to
amaze me with random days
shared on the mountain,”
said Adam.
In March of 2009, Adam’s
39-year-old mentor, Shane,
was in a fatal ski accident
at the Dolomite Mountains
in Italy. On this one tragic
day, Adam lost his hero and
a great friend.
“My life, like so many others
would never be the same.
I will be forever honored to
have known the man.”
Following this time of
devastation felt by Shane’s
family and the entire ski
community, Adam found
an outlet to give back to the
world in a way that con-
be lively and interesting.
We welcome all interested
readers to join us for an informative
and congenial evening
on Wednesday, April 28
Volunteer Month
April is Volunteer Month
and we wish to take this opportunity
to thank the many
volunteers who give of their
precious time to make ourlibrary
the vital asset it is to
the Raymond community.
Some of the many ways our
volunteers contribute to the
ongoing operation of the library
are by working in the
library, serving on a committee,
contributing to the various
fund raisers (the plant
sale, the book sales, the holiday
bake sale) and those who
organize and work on these
fundraisers.
Volunteers of the Out reach
Program help by bringing
books and other library materials
to those who are not
able to get to the library. We
have volunteers who organize
programs at the library
for the benefit of the public
and those who plan and conduct
an amazing children's
summer reading program
each year.
This is just a few of the
many ways our gifted volunteers
contribute to the community
through the library.
We appreciate your generosity!
MAkEOVER, from page 6
love story.
As I sit here watching
Christine perform this
month’s makeover on my
mother, I am teary eyed.
My mum deserves this.
She deserves to look and
feel beautiful because she
is the epitome of beautiful
to me. She deserves to be
pampered because she has
spent her entire life doing
for others, which has often
left her little time to do for
herself. Tonya asked me
to say a few special things
about my mum and I am
having trouble…not because
there isn’t anything
nice to say, no way, but because
I could literally go
on forever. What can I say
to you in just a sentence or
two that’ll tell people who
my mum is and what she
means to me and countless
other people? How
can I convey to you there
is no sentence? There are
no words. My mother is
the most selfless person I
will ever know. She’s a
giver. A lover. She has a
heart bigger than the universe
and it’s kinder than
you could ever imagine.
My mother is a supporter;
she’s my biggest fan. She
has unquestionably stood
behind every step I’ve ever
taken; she’s let me fall and
watched me soar. I would
never be who I am if it
weren’t for her. She has
instilled in me faith, perseverance,
hard work, determination,
hope, strength,
truth…She has fought
battles for me, rubbed
my back ‘til I’ve fallen
asleep, she’s cried with
me, laughed with me and
always loved me. She’s
also always made me,
her 26-year-old daughter,
homemade chicken noodle
soup with dumplings,
every time I am sick. I
suppose a mother’s love
for her children is that unconditional, incomprehensible
until you’re a mother
yourself, kind of love but,
people rarely mentions
a child’s love for their
mother. My love for my
mother is without a single
morsel of a doubt, unconditional.
My love for her
is so hard to fathom, my
mind can’t even grasp
the depth of my love. It’s
overwhelming, it fills my
soul and I know I can say
Why not kill two birds
with one stone.
all this on behalf of my
brother as well. I know
everyone that has had the
pleasure of knowing her
would agree with me. My
mother has touched many
lives with her kind spirit
and loving heart. She always
tells me, but I want
to make sure, Tonya, that
if you get one thing out of
this, it’s that we, my family,
my mum’s co-workers
and her friends, are so so
so very blessed to have
this gorgeous woman in
our lives. And I am so incredibly
proud that I get to
call her mum.
“Thank you to Christine
for calming my mum’s
nerves and doing what she
does so awesomely. Thank
you to Jess for making my
mum shine and thank you
to all the ladies at Salon
at 616 for taking the time
each month to recognize
all of these angels living
among us.”
Sandy’s makeover
was performed by stylist
Christine Kelly of Salon
at 616 and make-up artist
Jessica Porter. Christine
removed three inches of
hair from the perimeter
of Sandy’s overall length,
created layers for movement
and used a warm
level 7.5 base color and
added highlights. Christine
finished the hair with
a clear “glossing” to add
shine and strength, a side
swept bang to update Sandy’s
look and a brow shaping
to polish her new look
and prepare her for the application
of cosmetics by
Jessica. Jessica applied
warm and fair shades to
Sandy’s palette, creating
a healthy and youthful
look.
Advanced Dental Concepts,
located at Windham
Crossing, has partnered
with us by giving each
month’s makeover winner
a gift of beauty. Sandy
has received a $399 value
WISH, from page 13
nate the funds to the Make-
A-Wish Foundation.
The much-appreciated
funds are, right now, being
used to help grant a wish
for another deserving Maine
child diagnosed with a lifethreatening
medical condition.
“All of us here at the
Make-A-Wish Foundation
of Maine commend Adam
for the work he is doing
through the High Fives
Foundation,” said Kate
Vickery, Program Director
at the Make-A-Wish Foundation
of Maine. “We are
thrilled and grateful that he
and Shane’s family have
chosen to donate a portion
of the proceeds to the Foundation
on behalf of Shane.
He would undoubtedly be
very proud of this donation
and there is no better way
to acknowledge and honor
Shane’s memory than to
help change someone else’s
life. Adam’s story completely
exemplifies what we call
the power of a wish!”
On average, the Maine
chapter grants a wish to a
Maine child every five days
and each of those wishes
costs approximately $6,000.
The mission of the Foundation
is dependant upon donations
from generous people
like Adam, Shane’s family
and others involved in this
decision.
“With this possibility becoming
a reality, I feel relieved
and honored to give
back to an organization that
has changed my life in every
conceivable and positive
way! From the trip itself
and the strength and energy
it gave me, to the life-long
connections and friendships
from it, I am forever grateful,”
said Adam.
He continued, “Shane’s
wife Sherry and his daughter,
Ayla McConkey are
amazingly strong, wonderful
people and it is with
this donation that they and
I hope more people will not
only continue to pursue their
dreams as Shane inspired me
to do, but that they also feel
the hope that wishes bring to
hearts across America.”
Adam’s parents live in
Saco and continue to donate
their time to Make-A-Wish
as volunteers at events across
the state. His mother, Cathy
Baillargeon is critical to the
success of Saco’s Walk for
Wishes, which is an upcoming
fundraiser held across
the state, including Hill Stadium
at Thornton Academy
on May 27, 2010. The event
is open to the public and
registration is open at www.
mainewish.org.
Past Make-A-Wish recipient and Saco resident Adam
Baillargeon (left) stands with his mentor, the late Shane
McConkey at Squaw Valley USA. As a way to give back,
Adam (with High Fives Non-Profit Foundation and
Shane’s family) recently donated $1,500 to Make-A-Wish
in honor of Shane.
