Cushing successfully completed a rigorous application process, and will be joining nine other educators from across the nation in the study program, which is conducted by the Program for Teaching East Asia (TEA) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Nature Program The April Nature Program, TURTLES IN MAINE, is for all school age youngsters and will be held at the Raymond Village Library onWednesday, April 21 at 2:00pm. This is a fascinating look into the lives of terrestrial and aquatic turtles as well as several endangeredturtles and how and why researchers study them. This Cornerstones of Science (COS) program will be given by Jocelyn Hubbell, the executive director of COS, and is made possible bya grant from Loon Echo Land Trust, through the Helen Allen Endowment. There will be a turtle craft, and very possibly even a real turtle attending.This is a very popular activity, so be sure to sign up early, at the library, in order to participate. Reading Group The book chosen for April is Teacher Man, by Frank McCourt. Written by the acclaimed author of Angela's Ashes, Teacher Man is a tribute to all teachers. Volunteer Month April is Volunteer Month and we wish to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers who give of their precious time to make ourlibrary the vital asset it is to the Raymond community. Some of the many ways our volunteers contribute to the ongoing operation of the library are by working in the library, serving on a committee, contributing to the various fund raisers (the plant sale, the book sales, the holiday bake sale) and those who organize and work on these fundraisers. Volunteers of the Out reach Program help by bringing books and other library materials to those who are not able to get to the library. We have volunteers who organize programs at the library for the benefit of the public and those who plan and conduct an amazing children's summer reading program each year. As I sit here watching Christine perform this month’s makeover on my mother, I am teary eyed. My mum deserves this. She deserves to look and feel beautiful because she is the epitome of beautiful to me. She deserves to be pampered because she has spent her entire life doing for others, which has often left her little time to do for herself. Tonya asked me to say a few special things about my mum and I am having trouble…not because there isn’t anything nice to say, no way, but because I could literally go on forever. What can I say to you in just a sentence or two that’ll tell people who my mum is and what she means to me and countless other people? How can I convey to you there is no sentence? There are no words. My mother is the most selfless person I will ever know. She’s a giver. A lover. She has a heart bigger than the universe and it’s kinder than you could ever imagine. My mother is a supporter; she’s my biggest fan. She has unquestionably stood behind every step I’ve ever taken; she’s let me fall and watched me soar. I would never be who I am if it weren’t for her. She has instilled in me faith, perseverance, hard work, determination, hope, strength, truth…She has fought battles for me, rubbed my back ‘til I’ve fallen asleep, she’s cried with me, laughed with me and always loved me. She’s also always made me, her 26-year-old daughter, homemade chicken noodle soup with dumplings, every time I am sick. I suppose a mother’s love for her children is that unconditional,incomprehensible until you’re a mother yourself, kind of love but, people rarely mentions a child’s love for their mother. My love for my mother is without a single morsel of a doubt, unconditional. My love for her is so hard to fathom, my mind can’t even grasp the depth of my love. It’s overwhelming, it fills my soul and I know I can say Why not kill two birds with one stone. all this on behalf of my brother as well. I know everyone that has had the pleasure of knowing her would agree with me. My mother has touched many lives with her kind spirit and loving heart. She always tells me, but I want to make sure, Tonya, that if you get one thing out of this, it’s that we, my family, my mum’s co-workers and her friends, are so so so very blessed to have this gorgeous woman in our lives. The much-appreciated funds are, right now, being used to help grant a wish for another deserving Maine child diagnosed with a lifethreatening medical condition. “All of us here at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine commend Adam for the work he is doing through the High Fives Foundation,” said Kate Vickery, Program Director at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine. “We are thrilled and grateful that he and Shane’s family have chosen to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Foundation on behalf of Shane. He would undoubtedly be very proud of this donation and there is no better way to acknowledge and honor Shane’s memory than to help change someone else’s life. Adam’s story completely exemplifies what we call the power of a wish!” On average, the Maine chapter grants a wish to a Maine child every five days and each of those wishes costs approximately $6,000. The mission of the Foundation is dependant upon donations from generous people like Adam, Shane’s family and others involved in this decision. “With this possibility becoming a reality, I feel relieved and honored to give back to an organization that has changed my life in every conceivable and positive way! From the trip itself and the strength and energy it gave me, to the life-long connections and friendships from it, I am forever grateful,” said Adam. He continued, “Shane’s wife Sherry and his daughter, Ayla McConkey are amazingly strong, wonderful people and it is with this donation that they and I hope more people will not only continue to pursue their dreams as Shane inspired me to do, but that they also feel the hope that wishes bring to hearts across America.” Adam’s parents live in Saco and continue to donate their time to Make-A-Wish as volunteers at events across the state. His mother, Cathy Baillargeon is critical to the success of Saco’s Walk for Wishes, which is an upcoming fundraiser held across the state, including Hill Stadium at Thornton Academy on May 27, 2010. The event is open to the public and registration is open at www. mainewish.org.
