A Life-Altering Decision
John McDonald
It was the dawn of a day
that would change his life
forever, but as the sun began
coming over the stand
of pine that lined his lower
pasture he was not yet
aware of it. It would be the
last time the sun was seen
that day.
Soon the skies would
cloud over, and it would
begin to snow, then rain,
then go back to snow, then
change to freezing rain and
back to snow.
Perly Leighton awoke
like always that March
morning and began his
daily ritual: Put out the cat;
put on the coffee; load up
the parlor stove; fire up the
Queen Atlantic in the kitchen;
and read his thermometer
by kitchen window, the
barometer by the bathroom
and the precipitation gauge
on the deck and enter all
their numbers in his wellworn
journal.
Perly had been keeping
track of those numbers for
over thirty years and still
couldn’t think of one good
reason why. He knew from
history that both Thomas
Jefferson and Ben Franklin
had kept such records
throughout their lives and
that was fine. But at this
point in his life Perly didn’t
think that – for him – it was
a good enough reason any
more.
As the weather went
from one form of precipitation
to another Perly looked
out his kitchen
window, across
his barren field
and knew he was
in for one of
those March
days that
push us
Maine
r s
right to
the edge and
almost over it, those
days that make us think
seriously of living somewhere
farther south – even
New Jersey.
After a breakfast of oatmeal
and reheated beans
Perly made himself some
tea and sat in the rocker by
the kitchen stove to drink
it and think of something
useful he could be doing
that day. He tried to put
the present weather conditions
out of his mind
and thought instead
about the garden
he’d
been
planning
to put
in this
spring.
Every
year around
this time he
planned his
garden. On this morning
he hoped this would finally
be the year that the garden
he planned in March would
in some way resemble the
garden he planted come
FAFSA Raffle Winners at OHCHS
OHCHS seniors that
submitted proof of FAFSA
completion by February
14th were entered to win an
iPad or an iPod Touch. The
intrigue of such substantive
prizes started a valuable
financial aid conversation
among students and Stephanie
Littlehale, OHCHS
Aspirations Lab Coordinator,
assisted many students
and their parents with some
portion of their FAFSA.
At the time of the drawing
67% of our college
going students had been
entered in the raffle. The
FAFSA determines student
eligibility for all federal aid
for college. It is not too
late to complete the FAFSA
and Stephanie continues to
offer assistance to seniors
and their parents that have
not yet completed their
form. n
Three lucky OHCHS seniors were chosen to win prizes that were offered to students completing
their FAFSA by February 14th. Standing (back row) are Lori Allen, manager of
the South Paris Norway Savings Bank and Stephanie Littlehale, OHCHS Aspirations Lab
Coordinator. Standing (front row) are Ted Moccia, principal; Aaron Tremblay, winner
of an iPod Touch donated by Norway Savings Bank; Susan Graves, manager of Oxford
Federal Credit Union; Katie Garneau, winner of an iPod Touch donated by OFCU and
Mindy McLaren, winner of an iPad donated by the Oxford Hills Scholarship Fund.
Memorial Day weekend.
He knew he wanted his
peas planted first, but he
couldn’t decide if he should
plant them early and take
his chances with an early
May frost or wait till the
end of May, like the peaplanting
traditionalists.
He’d been among the Memorial
Day weekend peaplanters
in town and over
the years had even been
known to ridicule the earlybirds
of pea-planting society
down at the store. On
this particular March morning
Perly was feeling more
contrary than normal and
felt like doing something
completely different. Still,
it wouldn’t be the timing of
his pea-planting that he’d
scratch that itch with.
It was around this time
Otisfield Softball Little
League and Farm Team
would like to thank all
the people involved in
our Italian Dinner Fundraiser.
The dinner was a
huge success and we can't
thank our community and
local businesses enough
for helping us make it as
great as it was. The girls on
the softball teams worked
hard and the return was
more than we could have
ever expected! A special
thank you to the Otisfield
Social Outreach Council
DELIGHTFUL
that – out of the blue – Perly’s
phone rang. The sudden
sound of its sharp ring
nearly gave him a coronary
since Perly wasn’t used to
getting calls at such an early
hour. In fact he wasn’t
used to getting calls at any
hour. His friends knew that
Perly preferred talking in
person and only kept the
phone around for emergencies.
On the other end of the
line was Wallace Watts
who wanted to talk to Perly
about town business. After
almost an hour of cajoling,
Wallace managed to convince
Perly to do something
that would – for good and
ill – change his life forever.
Perly agreed to run for
Second Selectman at the upcoming
town meeting. n
who guided the parents
and girls in putting on a
dinner of this size. They
were very gracious with
their time and knowledge.
The proceeds from
our dinner will be used
for equipment, uniforms
and snack shack updates
to name a few things. We
are looking forward to
another successful year of
softball and we encourage
everyone to come out
to the games and cheer us
on! Amy Kahkonen, Otisfield
When it comes to putting
wild meat in the freezer, the
Maine's annual moose hunt
has no match.
Last fall's hunt was a big
success.With a total of 3,725
permits allocated by the
state, hunters bagged 2,895
moose across the state for a
total success rate of 78 percent.
That is a 12 percent
increase from the 2011 success
rate. (The weather conditions
did not cooperate
in 2011).Traditional moose
hunting areas saw a success
rate of 81 percent while
the Wildlife Management
Districts that comprise the
southern Maine moose
hunting area (15,
Maine Moose Lottery
16, 22, 23, 25 and 26)
had an 18 percent success
rate. According to Maine's
moose biologist Lee Kantar,
overall 11 bulls, all taken in
the far north, weighed in at
more than 1,000 pounds,
including one that sported
antlers measuring 66
inches. A total of 17 bulls
recorded antler spreads in
excess of 60 inches.
The average age for a harvested
moose was 4.5 years
old for males and 5.5 for
females.
But the harvest is biased
because of hunter selection
of animals, i.e., mature
bulls.The oldest bull taken
was 13.5 years old and a
cow was 16.5!
This year, thanks to aerial
surveys of moose that produce
more reliable moose
population data, the Maine
Department of Inland
Fisheries and Wildlife is
comfortable increasing the
allocated moose hunting
permits from 3,725 to 4,155
this year. Ninety percent
of these will be awarded
Time is running out for
prospective moose hunters
to get their names entered
in the spring moose lottery
drawing that will be held
this year in Greenville on
June 16th. If you plan to
apply for a moose permit
with a paper application
in the mail, you have until
April 1st. Online applicants
have until May 14th at midnight
to submit their moose
permit applications.
This year Maine residents
are limited to one chance
in the lottery. The fee is
$15.00. If you get lucky, the
actual moose-hunting permit
will cost you $52.00.
Nonresidents, which
this year are allocated just
10 percent of the issued
moose-hunting permits,
may purchase as many
chances as their pocketbooks
will allow. One
chance in the moose lottery
The moose seasons next
fall take place Sept.23-28,
Oct. 14-19, Nov. 4-9 and
Nov. 4-30.
Most of the permits are
the first season limited to
bulls. ( A detailed breakdown
is available in the
paper applications for the
moose lottery or on the
Fish and Wildlife Department
website: www.mefishwildlife.com.)
The third
season, Nov. 4-9, is strictly
a cow hunt and the permits
are issued in eight Wildlife
Management Districts
(WMDs).
From the standpoint of
"process," the moose lottery
itself in Maine has been an
interesting evolution. Often
unfair system,
the lottery has
been refined, especially for
Maine residents. It is an
important, if not a critical
the other big challenge
for state policymakers is to
It’s been several months
since I have updated everyone
on Chance and
her recovery after being
rescued from the kill pen
in September. I am very
happy to report that she is
a very happy, healthy, and
energetic 3 year-old. Her
mane was trimmed and is
now growing back thick
and healthy, her winter
coat is being shed out leaving
a new glossy beautiful
coat, her hooves are healthy
and the stress lines are almost
all grown out, and
her weight is doing excellent!
She enjoyed her first
Christmas Eve candy cane
bran mash and survived her
first Maine winter.
Chance has been growing
like a weed and I recently
taped her at 16.1
hands high. She is full of
life, running, bucking, and
rearing in the pasture daily.
She is learning patience
and I am remembering
once again how three year
old horses has no patience!
cleared of water and snow,
Nothin’ But Small Talk…Chance’s Journey
training in the yard and
learning manners while
being led in hand. Walks
down the driveway proved
to be exciting with squealing,
head tossing, and rearing,
then she is reminded of
her manners. Lucky for me
someone taught her to cross
tie prior to shipping her to
the kill pen auction and she
enjoys her grooming sessions
along with all the attention
that comes with it.
Although I am pretty sure
that if she keeps growing I
will need a step stool to be
able to reach her back!
This is my first experience
with a owning a
Thoroughbred and dealing
with their weight. She still
is slightly ribby but she is
getting her grain, beet pulp,
and endless hay. I have
never known a once emaciated
horse to be picky about
hay, but she is, and is very
wasteful. She is growing
like crazy so I am taking
that into consideration as
well. Dental work, chiropractic
work, and spring
worming are on the agenda
for April and I am sure will
make a difference as well.
Chance continues to play
with my two year old Australian
Shepherd, Beckett.
He barks and nips at her
nose until she chases him.
She has never once tried to
bite or kick him, although
he’s had to make a few
quick exits under the fence
for fear of being run over!
It is quite the scene as they
both thoroughly enjoy running
around the pasture like
crazy animals with each
other. My hopes are to turn
my 7 year old mare, Cocoa,
out with her in the near future
so she can enjoy some
play time and interaction
with another horse. I wanted
to wait until she was at
a good weight before pasturing
her with a friend, for
fear they would eat all her
food.
Spring and summer plans
for Chance are to continue
teaching her the groundwork
that was left out in
her prior life and then moving
to under saddle training
sessions. It is hard to think
about, but if the right person
and the perfect home came
along, I would re home her.
Chance is a young, well
built, very nice moving
horse with unlimited potential
and deserves someone’s
devoted attention. She has
recovered fully from her
near death experience and
is on her way to being a
super star…a definite diamond
in the rough. I feel
blessed to have been able to
save her and bring her back
to health. Now it’s on to the
next chapter in her young
life! n A Second Chance, a 3 year old rescued Thoroughbred, is thriving 7 months after being
pulled from a kill pen that was headed to slaughter. A sure diamond in a rough, Chance
is a super star in the making!
Underground Railroad Presented
Connie Benwitz of
Minot recently briefed the
Hebron Historical Society
on the use of quilts in the
Underground Railroad. As
a quilt maker and former
librarian she became fascinated
with the history of
quilts assisting the journey
of slaves escaping southern
plantations. As most
slaves did not have the
opportunity of learning to
read and write they had to
depend on signals for safe
passage in their escape
north and into Canada.
Quilts of various designs
were hung at homes assisting
the escapees, each
of which giving direction,
modes of travel or indi-
cating a “safe house” (as
pictured above). Numerous
designs ,duplicated
by Ms Benwitz, were
presented and detailed.
Lots of Reasons to Love Chickens
The silver laced wyandotte is a beautiful
distinct bird that’s easy to care for.
The world loves eggs.
High in protein and low in
fat, eggs might be the perfect
food. The only thing
better than eggs is fresh
eggs and they don’t get any
fresher than when they’re
laid today. It’s not surprising
that more and more
people are getting their
eggs from their own back
yard.
As you drive the back
roads of Maine, especially
now that warmer weather
is upon us, you see more
chickens and birds than
ever before. Chickens are
about the easiest animals to
care for and the low cost of
a large bag of chicken feed
help ensure affordable eggs
all year round.
Free ranging chickens
spend warm weather scouring
your property for pests
and insects. A friend of
mine attests that since he
got his chickens, his dog
hasn’t had one tick. With
Disease in our area, chickens
provide an extra level
of security for family and
pets while reducing toxins
and other pesticides needed
on your property.
This type of omnivore
diet helps ensure the quality
of your eggs. When
your chicken’s are outside
eating the bounty of nature,
they are also depositing
great fertilizer on your
lawn. Quick clean ups of
the hen house make a great
addition to compost piles
and family gardens.
Taking care of chickens
is also a fun, educational
chore for children. Feeding,
watering and collecting
eggs can be done in
just a few minutes and offers
a regular activity that
families can do together.
Critter Chatter: Getting Serious About Wildlife Diseases - Raccoons
Carleen Cote
Far from the prying eyes
of humans, the yearly ritual
has begun. Raging hormones
initiate the breeding
season. Males pursue
females until the female selects
the male of her choice.
Gestation periods vary with
each species. Babies will
soon be born. There will
be intended and unintended
encounters with humans.
Several species having
their young are labeled
as rabies vector species,
meaning that they can be
hosts for the rabies virus,
capable of passing the virus
to their babies and to
humans. These include the
fox, skunk, raccoon, bat
and woodchuck. All warm
blooded mammals can be
hosts for the virus, but the
ones mentioned above are
the major carriers.
for rabies. That same year,
another raccoon from a different
of rabies at three months of
Raccoons also arrive at
the Center with ticks, but
though we have cared for
hundreds of raccoons over
the years, only one had
mange. Raccoon parvo virus
and canine parvo are
two other diseases that can
cause sickness and death in
raccoons. We have had several
years of dealing with
parvo virus. Last year was
the first year we had raccoons
with canine parvo.
These diseases are communicable
to other raccoons.
The suffering and death of
raccoons we have lovingly
cared for are devastating to
Donald and myself, as well
as our volunteers.
The Stephens Connection
Connecting Stephens Memorial Hospital and
Western Maine Health to the communities we serve.
Stephens Memorial Hospital 2013 Annual Fund
For 56 years Stephens Memorial Hospital and the community have championed
the need for quality healthcare in western Maine. From its humble beginnings
to our current facility the staff at Stephens Memorial Hospital has been able to
provide exceptional medical care because of the commitment of our staff and the
financial support from our community.
We cannot remain static in our quest to provide quality care. Our need to invest
in technology to recruit and retain the best physicians to Norway and enhance
healthcare outcomes is critical. Our Annual Fund campaign for 2013 will fund
the purchase of a laparoscopic tower and supporting equipment for our surgeons
in the Operating Room. The laparoscopic surgery is less invasive for the patient,
reduces time spent in the hospital and generally allows the patient to return to
their normal routine more quickly.
Contributions to our Annual Fund are vital in ensuring that new technology and
programs are funded. If you would like to support Stephens Memorial Hospital,
visit our website: wmhcc.org and click on the Ways to Give Link to see how you
can help.
or we will see more challenges – everything from soaring health care costs to
diminished national security and decreased business competitiveness,” said
Vilsack.
Miller Receives National Recognition
Timothy A. Churchill,
President and Chief
Executive Officer of
Western Maine Health is
pleased to announce that
Lisa Miller, MD of Western
Maine Family Practice was
recently named to the list of
physicians earning a three
year recognition from the
National Committee for
Quality Assurance (NCQA)
through the Heart/Stroke
Recognition Program
(HSRP), beginning in
January 2013.
The Heart/Stroke
Recognition Program was
designed to improve the
quality of care that patients
with cardiovascular disease
or who have had a stroke
receive by recognizing
clinicians who deliver quality
cardiovascular and stroke
care, and by motivating
other clinicians to document
and improve their delivery
of cardiovascular and
stroke care. To receive
recognition, which is valid
for three years, Dr. Lisa
Miller submitted data that
demonstrates performance
that meets the Program's
key cardiovascular and
stroke care measures.
These measures include
blood pressure and
cholesterol control, among
others. When people with
cardiovascular disease or
who have had a stroke receive
quality care as outlined by
these measures, they are less
likely to suffer additional
complications, such as
a second heart attack or
stroke. “Quality patient care
translates into lives saved,”
said Sidney Smith, Professor
of Medicine, University of
South Carolina at Chapel
Hill and Past President
and Past Chief Science
Officer of the American
Heart Association. “This is
why the American Heart
Association/American
Stroke Association is
supporting a recognition
program for clinicians
providing quality care.
This program closes
the gap by putting into
Thanks to our Volunteers
for Being Lifesavers!
Did you know that SeniorsPlus has 594
volunteers who gave us 33,810 hours of
their lifesaving time this last year?
Without these “lifesavers”, Meals on
Wheels would not be cooked, and packaged.
There would be no one to deliver
the meals. The LunchPlus Cafes would
have no hosts.
Also, there would be no speakers for the
Education Center, so therefore, no classes.
No Tax and Rent assistance for anyone.
Only a small portion of the people
helped with Medicare questions.
Our Board of Directors and Advisory
Council would cease to exist.
Because no data was entered, evaluations
tabulated and mailings sent out, our reports
would not be done on time
The bottom line – the work of SeniorsPlus
could not be done without our volunteers.
They are lifesavers to SeniorsPlus.
Ultimately, they are lifesavers to all
those aging in Androscoggin, Oxford
and Franklin counties. Because we have
so few staff to serve the 3 counties, they
are making it possible for us to do our
jobs… and help improve the lives of all
of you.
Thank you, thank you, volunteers, for being
our lifesavers!
Join the team of volunteers at
SeniorsPlus. Our current needs include
Meals on Wheels kitchen assistants,
LunchPlus Café hosts, Meals on Wheels
The Healthy Geezer
By Fred Cicetti
Q. I usually get a bit
light-headed when I stand,
but this feeling is much
worse when I get up from
the dinner table. I don’t
drink. Any ideas?
There’s a possibility you
have “postprandial hypotension,”
or, in layman’s
language, low blood pressure
after a meal. This is a
senior malady; few younger
people experience this.
Other possible symptoms
include dizziness, blurred
vision, nausea and fainting.
I recommend going to a
doctor to have your symptoms
checked.
When you eat, blood
pours into your digestive
system. To maintain your
blood pressure, your heart
pumps more often and your
blood vessels constrict.
But these compensatory
mechanisms don’t work for
some people.
To help prevent postprandial
hypotension, eat
small portions several
times a day and limit highcarbohydrate
foods such
as potatoes, rice, pasta and
bread.
There’s another form of
low blood pressure called
“postural hypotension”
that affects some people
when they stand up. Also
called “orthostatic hypotension,”
this is especially
common in older adults
who are more likely to use
high blood pressure drugs.
When you experience postural
hypotension, blood
pools in your legs.
Low blood pressure is
commonly caused by drugs
for high blood pressure,
surgical medications, antianxiety
agents, diuretics,
heart medicines, antidepressants,
narcotic painkillers
and alcohol.
Other causes of low
blood pressure include dehydration,
heart failure,
heart arrhythmias, shock
from infection, stroke, severe
allergic reaction, major
trauma, heart attack and
advanced diabetes.
The effects of hypotension
can lead to falls, which
can be serious for seniors.
Here are some pointers for
avoiding the dangers of low
blood pressure:
When arising, let your
feet hang over the side of
your bed. Then flex your
toes up and down about
a dozen times. Stand up
slowly. Count to 10 before
you start walking. This is
a good idea whenever you
get up from lying or sitting
for more than 20 minutes.
Crossing your legs while
sitting upright may also
help increase blood pressure
Some experts define low
blood pressure as readings
lower than 90 systolic (the
first number) or 60 diastolic
(the second number).
However, low blood pressure
is relative, so doctors
often define blood pressure
as too low only if there are
symptoms.
In many instances, low
blood pressure isn’t serious.
Wiles Garage & Body Shop
65 Years in Business
YOUR ONE STOP SHOP! HOP!
However, it is important to
see your doctor if you have
hypotension symptoms, because
they sometimes can
point to serious problems.
Chronic low blood pressure
may increase the risk of
Alzheimer’s-type dementia
in some older adults.
Low blood pressure
without symptoms rarely
requires treatment. In
symptomatic cases, doctors
address the primary problems
such as heart failure.
When hypotension is druginduced,
treatment usually
involves altering the drug
regimen.
It is possible to raise
blood pressure when that
is required. Here are some
ways:
• Eating more salt. However,
too much sodium can
cause heart failure, especially
among seniors. Don’t
increase your salt without
consulting with your doctor.
• Drink more water. Fluids
increase blood volume
and help prevent dehydration.
• Compression stockings
used to treat varicose veins
may help reduce the pooling
of blood in your legs.
• There are also medications
your doctor may prescribe.
First Lady LePage Cuts Ribbon On
New Caring Alzheimer’s Facility
First Lady Anne LePage makes comments to the public with Julie and Mike Benecke of
Bedside Manor at the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting held March 20th.
With Maine’s aging population,
one of the toughest
challenges a family can
encounter is Alzheimer’s.
More than 5 million Americans
currently have the disease.
By 2025, that number
is expected to balloon to
over 7 million. Unlike heart
disease or diabetes, Alzheimer’s
can’t be treated with
diet and exercise. Treatments
and medications for
Alzheimer’s continue to be
few and far between.
It has been said that
while this disease is deadly
for the victim, it’s devastating
for the family. Th e diffi -
culty of caring for a person
they love, while simultaneously
watching them deteriorate
can be relenting
as things that used to take
a few minutes can take all
day. Ultimately turning into
situations where the home
is just no longer suitable or
safe for the care of patients.
Julie Benecke of Bedside
Manor in Oakland, Maine
has seen this devastation
twice in her lifetime; First
with her Grandmother and
now currently with her
own mother. Despite every
eff ort to fi nd the best long
term care, she found herself
disillusioned with every option
available for her mom.
So she and her family built
their own.
“Bedside Manor has
allowed us to fi ght back
against Alzheimer’s disease
and create something positive
out of this personal experience
with our Hero, our
mom. We know fi rst-hand
the stress, frustration, exhaustion,
anxiety and overall
sadness families and
caregivers go through when
caring for a family member
with Alzheimer’s or dementia,”
says Benecke. “Our
promise at Bedside Manor
is to treat our resident’s as
family and to make every
day special for them.”
When someone in your life has Alzheimer’s,
the questions keep coming.
