Choosing appropriate primary pack<br />

Desiccants have been utilised to c<strong>on</strong>trol the exposure <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>product</strong>s to the<br />

ingress <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> moisture.<br />

Desiccants vary in their capacity and the rate that they adsorb/absorb<br />

ingressed moisture.<br />

Silica gel is very efficient at absorbing moisture at high relative humidity, but<br />

comparatively poor at lower Relative Humidity.<br />

Molecular sieve desiccants - the opposite scenario prevails.<br />

As a c<strong>on</strong>sequence, more molecular sieve is required at higher relative<br />

humidity, and the greater the handling precauti<strong>on</strong>s that are required during<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>packaging</str<strong>on</strong>g> operati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Based <strong>on</strong> the calculated WVTR <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> known c<strong>on</strong>tainer comp<strong>on</strong>ents and the rate<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> moisture adsorbed by desiccants, the amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> desiccant that would be<br />

required to maintain a specified relative humidity over the <strong>product</strong>’s shelf-life<br />
