This highly entertaining 1927 film is a happy irreverent piece of suburban Australiana with a series of lunatic subplots woven around the schoolboy, Fatty Finn, his friends and enemies, and Hector the Goat. 2 J U N E 2 0 1 2 I L L A W A R R A F O L K C L U B N E W S L E T T E R FILM, MUSIC, CONCERT JAN PRESTION presents music to a silent film KIDS STAKES plus Rapunzel's Party & mystery act 7.30pm Friday 1 JUNE | CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG Members $15 | Non-Members $20 | Youth (12-16) $5 | Child (U12) free Tal Ordell’s movie was hugely popular when it was released, and it is an iconic part of early Australian Cinema. It was shot entirely on location in New South Wales, except the final Billy Cart race (illegal in NSW so filmed in Queensland), a climactic race which leaves audiences gasping with excitement.
Jan Preston’s original score for piano and percussion (kazoo, tin drum, snare and plastic bags) reinforces the story, characters and comedy of the film. Recent performances at Woodford Folk Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, NZ’s Art Deco Festival and Kiama Pics and Flicks, have had a sensational response from contemporary film going audiences. After travelling overseas for most of 2010 RAPUNZEL’S PARTY are Helen Archer, Louise Bell, Margaret Bradley, Geralyn Cheers and Olive Hodgson. These versatile women play guitar, flute, harp, recorder, tin whistle and percussion with passion and sensitivity. CONCERT Always warmly received, the talented group of five women offers heartfelt and dynamic songs, irresistible rhythms and soaring vocal harmonies. With an enchanting blend of styles including A Cappella, Celtic, soul, folk rock and world music, they entertain with unique interpretations of songs from many sources as well as creative original compositions. Over the past twenty years each of these women has performed in an array of musical genres. The Illawarra Folk Club will go back to its roots when it presents eight of the regions seasoned and up and coming folk performers. It will be a night of enormous variety with each group or performer taking to the stage for 20 minutes. Not only that but admission will be the same as it was 20 years ago, just $5 for members and $7 for others. NO SUCH THING is a group of music enthusiasts who come together weekly with the aim of preserving , learning and performing Australia’s rich traditional dance music heritage. They have gone from strength to strength from humble beginnings in 2000 to the release of their internationally successful CD Going To The Barndance in 2008. They have played for dances, concerts and led sessions at folk clubs and festivals including Illawarra Folk Festival The National Folk Festival. as well as providing the music once professional music teachers and several members of the group are successful recording artists in their own right. Formed in 2006, Rapunzel's Party have performed at events across the Southern Highlands including the Tulip Time Food and Wine Fair, Carols by the Lake, and for several years at the “Where My Heart Lies” exhibition for International Womens' Day. In November 2009 the band wowed an enthusiastic sold out crowd at their performance at The Mittagong Playhouse. a month for the Wongawilli Bush Dance. Apart from these events they performed at the opening of the film Australia with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. ARIETTA dissolves the boundaries of musical genres, driven by a belief that great music is timeless. Kaye Osborn on vocals and David Curtis on guitar perform romantic songs from the eleventh century to the present, including hauntingly beautiful Iberian kharja and Italian aria.
