SCALES AND TAILS
Get ready to
go ‘Fishin’ in
the Dark’
The summer fishing season is nearing its
peak, and that means the Fishin’ in the Dark
derby, a local favorite, quickly is approaching.
Many folks enjoy this event because of its
unique format.
The derby will take place Aug. 30-31.
Participants may fish any Wisconsin waterway
that has public access — no private ponds are
allowed. The event starts at 6 a.m. Saturday
and runs through noon Sunday. The format is
also very conservation minded.
The adult division pays first- through fourthplace
for walleye, sauger, saugeye and longest
fish. Also, the single-longest large- or smallmouth
bass and catfish (any species). To take
home the gold in the bluegill division, judges
measure the longest total of five fish, measured
head to tail. The same five-fish total also will
include a separate division for perch and crappie
combined.
In the youth division, there are two categories:
single-longest catfish (any species), and measured
total inches of up to five panfish, including
perch, crappie, bluegill (may be a mixed bag).
Children ages 4 to 12 fish free. The $20 adult
fishing fee includes a meal and festivities; nonfishing
guests are $5 each. Included in the registration
fee are food, music by All About You
Mobile Music and some great door prizes.
The meal starts at 1 p.m. Sunday; an awards
ceremony follows at 3 p.m. Door prizes will be
drawn hourly while participants fish. All festivities
will be held at Rollette Oil, located at 1451
Madison Road, Beloit. Register at the same location
by Aug. 27.
Also on hand will be representatives from
Rock Valley Anglers and the Blackhawk Musky
Club, as well as the state Department of
Natural Resources, who has a number to call to
check if your fish is a winner or if you can
release it on the water. Hope to see you there.
The Stateline Friends of NRA will host its
11th annual banquet Aug. 22 at the Pontiac
Convention Center, located at 2809 N. Pontiac
Drive, Janesville. For more information, or to
On the Lake Michigan, shoreline anglers are
taking Chinooks and brown trout off McKinley
pier, with alewives fished off bottom. In Racine,
Chinooks and rainbow trout are taking alewives
and spawn sacs off the piers. In Kenosha, shore
anglers are taking some browns and perch. The
perch are hitting small minnows.
The Wild Goose says: Recently a female
angler contacted me because she wants to
pickle a recently caught northern pike. We
know there are many fine recipes but
here’s our favorite:
Cut meat into 1/2-inch squares and place
into a glass bowl or crock pot. Add 5/8 cup
kosher or canning salt per quart of fish.
Top with white vinegar; cover and stir for
three to five days. Pour off the brine and
rinse under cold running water. Mix 2 cups
sugar, 1 quart white vinegar, 1 quart white
port wine and 1/3 cup pickling spices.
Bring mixture to a simmer, then let it cool.
Place fish in jars, alternating layers with
onions. Pour in spiced liquid, cover and
refrigerate for a week. Makes 3 quarts.
Enjoy.
