Can you help? Readers ask for special recipes
Every so often, it’s good to
clean out the files and start
fresh, and that’s what I’m doing
today. I’ve received several calls
for recipes that I don’t have, so
maybe you can help.
Before we go in that direction,
I just want to remind everyone
about the importance of the
family meal. A study of family
eating habits, first published in
2005, lately has been receiving
new attention. The findings,
however, are not new; they reiterate
what anecdotal evidence
has suggested for decades.
The National Center on
Addiction and Substance Abuse
at Columbia University put the
study together with data collected
over nearly a decade.
Researchers found that family
dinners get better with practice.
The less often a family eats
together, the less healthy the
food, the more meager the conversation
and the worse the
experience likely will be.
Among those who eat together
three or fewer times per week,
45 percent say the TV is on during
meals, and nearly 33 percent
say there isn’t much conversation.
Children in these situations
are twice as likely as those
who have frequent family meals
to say there is a great deal of
tension among family members,
and are much less likely to
think their parents are proud of
them.
Unfortunately, family dinners
have declined over the years.
According to surveys, 30 to 40
percent of families do not have
dinner together on a regular
basis.
“Putting Family First:
Successful Strategies for
Reclaiming Family Life in A
Hurry Up World,” written by
William J. Doherty and Barbara
Carlson, offers some guidelines
and tips on how to reverse that
trend. The book now is available
in paperback. The authors are
the founders of Putting Family
First, which can be found online
at www.puttingfamilyfirst.org.
“For young children,” writes
Doherty, “mealtime at home is a
stronger predictor of academic
achievement and psychological
adjustment than time spent in
any of the following activities:
school, studying, sports,
church/religious activities or art
activities.
“For teens, having regular
dinners with parents is a strong
predictor of academic success,
psychological adjustment and
lower rates of alcohol use, drug
use, early sexual behavior, eating
disorders and risk for suicide.”
The kitchen is more than a
place to store the refrigerator. It
really is the heart of the home,
and preparing food together can
be a good way to start important
conversations with your children
in a nonthreatening situation.
Now, here’s why I bring this
up: just read this first letter.
Then, if you think you can help
these readers, send your reply to
the address at the end of this
column and I will forward the
information to them. Thanks in
advance.
Dear Lynn,
My girls (Anna, 17, Amy 13,
and Abigail, 5) love to cook, and
we are trying to reproduce a
potato dumpling that their
grandmother used to make.
Unfortunately, she died after a
long battle with cancer and we
can’t find the recipe in any of her
recipe books.
Grandma always had a way
with the girls, teaching them
how to cook and bake and a
whole lot more. Somehow, they
would tell their grandma everything
when they were in the
kitchen, from their biggest
dreams to their smallest worries.
I’d have to phone her up after
bringing them home just to get
the scoop.
The recipe would be a wonderful
reminder of their loving
grandma. It was made using
leftover mashed potatoes, flour
and eggs. She’d use a teaspoon
CLIP ‘N SAVE CLIP ‘N SAVE CLIP ‘N SAVE
to drop them into boiling water
or soup. The girls liked them
best covered with butter and
grated cheese.
If anyone has a similar recipe,
I’d be grateful! — Bridgette
Lynn’s note: Grandma
Alenka is of Polish descent,
which may be a hint about the
type of recipe we are looking for.
Dear Lynn,
I am wondering if you could
help me. My daughter and I love
to entertain, and at one of our
get-togethers a person brought
flavored Kettle Potato Chips.
The chips were topped with a
mixture of dill, dried ranch
dressing and sugar. This is all
that we can remember; we are
trying to find out what the other
ingredients are and whether the
mixture is dried in the oven or
just put in a container to sit for
awhile so the flavors mingle.
The topping is not the same
as what is used for homemade
ranch pretzels, but it is similar.
We have asked everyone we can
think of, and no one remembers
it.
I hope to find the recipe and
make the chips as a surprise for
a very dear friend of mine. We
would greatly appreciate any
help you could give, as I have
been searching for several
months to no avail.
Thank you — Gail
Organizing family
recipes
Family recipes can be a treasure
trove of taste, aromas and
kinship lore. There are lots of
options available for getting
those memories organized.
Start by organizing the project
around a family gathering
when the most people will be
present. Ask everyone to bring
their best or favorite recipes.
Use a tape recorder to record
everyone’s memories of that
particular food, then volunteer
someone to type it all up.
Family cookbooks are becoming
popular again, but some of
the publishing programs may
be too restrictive. Places like
Staples or Office Max can copy,
collate and bind your recipes at
about the same cost. All you
have to do is provide the
recipes and stories on regular
typing paper (8-1/2 by 11-inch
size).
These books make wonderful
holiday gifts, and more copies
can be made rather easily without
lengthy commitments.
