The ultra-stylish Passat<br />

CC, which is set to arrive<br />

this October, features an<br />

abundance of that quality<br />

and should advance Volkswagen’s<br />

reputation as a<br />

builder of artistic, as well as<br />

practical products.<br />

The only odd part about<br />

the CC is its name. The initials<br />

stand for Comfort<br />

Coupé, but since four doors<br />

are plainly visible, shouldn’t<br />

it more accurately be called<br />

the Comfort Sedan? That<br />

slight bit of poetic licence is<br />

perhaps understandable<br />

since the car’s low, sweeping<br />

roofline and flush-fitting<br />

rear glass give it a certain<br />

coupelike shape. Whatever,<br />

you call it, the CC is the<br />

easiest on the eyes of any<br />

automobile currently wearing<br />

a VW badge.<br />

It comes as no surprise,<br />

then, that the CC shares<br />

none of its body panels with<br />

its Passat sedan or wagon<br />

siblings. Although all mod-<br />

harness the same platform<br />

and basic suspension,<br />

the CC is actually slightly<br />

longer and wider than the<br />

others while sitting two<br />

inches lower to the ground.<br />

The front and rear wheels<br />

have been placed slightly<br />

farther apart for a more aggressive<br />

stance and sportier<br />

handling.<br />

Other significant differences<br />

are displayed inside.<br />

The interior is nothing short of spectacular in its<br />

design and detail. If you’re looking to trade in<br />

your Jetta for something ritzy while remaining<br />

loyal to VW, then the CC is your machine.<br />

There, Volkswagen has revised<br />

the control panel and<br />

front seats and completely<br />

reshaped the back seat so<br />

that there’s room for only<br />

two occupants. The space in<br />

the middle features a handy<br />

air-conditioned storage bin<br />

plus room for a generously<br />

sized fold-down arm rest.<br />

This interior redesign will<br />

obviously cause some buyers<br />

to skip the CC in favor<br />

of something more practical,<br />

just as they likely would<br />

if this Passat was a real<br />

coupe. As well, the car’s<br />

coupe-like roofline means<br />

that extra-tall passengers<br />

will likely pass on being offered<br />

a rear-seat spot, especially<br />

for long trips.<br />

Recognizing this, VW has<br />

scooped out the seat cushion<br />

in an attempt to maximize<br />

headroom.
