Physics <strong>of</strong> High Fidelity Sound<br />

Reproduction<br />

Applies elementary physical principles<br />

to the study <strong>of</strong> the components <strong>of</strong> high<br />

fidelity systems. Will convey an appre-<br />

ciation <strong>of</strong> the physics <strong>of</strong> such systems<br />

and an understanding <strong>of</strong> the specifica-<br />

tions <strong>of</strong> modern equipment. Includes<br />

several evening clinics during which<br />

interested students can measure their<br />

Chemistry in Modern Society<br />

The impact <strong>of</strong> chemistry on modern<br />

society will be considered by discussion<br />

<strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> topics including: mari-<br />

juana and other non-medical drugs;<br />

food additives; birth controls; cancer-<br />

causing chemicals; pesticides and other<br />

chemical methods to control insects;<br />

chemical warfare.<br />

Prereq: At least one year <strong>of</strong> Secon-<br />

dary School Chemistry<br />

Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Pollution<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the chemistry involved in<br />

pollution problems encountered with<br />

consumer products and in selected<br />

industries. Progress on overcoming the<br />

pollution will be discussed with<br />

emphasis on the Chemistry. (Open to<br />

all interested students.)<br />

Descriptive Astronomy<br />

A survey course in astronomy intended<br />

for Mathematics, Engineering and<br />

Science students. Newtonian develop-<br />

ments in the solar system, the Sun and<br />

planets, stars, the Milky Way, galaxies<br />

and cosmology.<br />

Open lo first-year or upper-year<br />

students in all faculties.<br />

Students interested in the above<br />

courses in Astronomy (i.e. SC1 237,<br />

236) should note that because <strong>of</strong> over-<br />

lapping material both courses may not<br />

be taken for credit, on/y the one most<br />

suitable to. their background. Students<br />

with a weak background in Physics<br />

and/or Mathematics may well find it<br />

advisable to take SC/ 238 before taking<br />

PHYS 275.
