Reeds Spring, Mo. 65737 • 417/272-3527
Dear Readerville:
I finally heard the peepers and
realized it is Spring in the hills.
Color galore, sunshine, and,
yes, suffering folks with itchy
eyes, runny noses, sneezing and
coughing. It seems more people
than I ever heard of are in this
battle. Pain, bills, allergies, and
insects; if it is not one, it is the
other. The other night a doggone
wasp stung me, not once, but
twice. I had always heard they
could only sting once, then some
said it was twice. Do you know?
I know one thing for certain, I
don’t want to learn by experience.
CHIT CHAT
I always enjoy a limb line
with friend Elsie Johnson. We
talk of old days and new ones. I
saw Betty Lane at Country Mart.
She cut in front of me with her
cart without sounding her horn,
so I yelled at her -tee hee. She
said she learned these maneuvers
from Ralph, and I can believe
that.
Saw Mary Eisenhour at the
Table Rock Health Care Center.
You get well, my friend, Mary.
We miss you.
Efton and Gertie Pritchard
took their daughter, Geraldine
Riott, out for lunch. On their
way home, Geraldine received a
call that her mother-in-law, Louise
Riott was being taken to the
hospital. Louise left her earthly
life soon after.
Louise Riott
I had not seen Louise for several
years, but I remember her as
a sweet, jolly person. She was
a hard worker and a friend to
many. We extend our heartfelt
sympathy to Keith, Debbie, and
all the rest of the family . May
God bless each of you at this
time with His peace.
Doris Lee
I only learned after the paper
came out that my mother’s cousin,
Doris Lee had passed away.
We had seen her a while back at
Reeds Spring Jct.
the Logan reunion. I have heard
many stories about these cousins
when they were kids. Aunt Lou
Logan and Grandma, Charity
Grisham, had about (21) children
between them, and they could
cause lots of mischief. We are
so sorry for this loss and want to
extend our condolences to Mary
May, Gertie Custer, and all the
rest of the family in the passing
of our beloved Doris Lee.
Birthdays
Happy late birthday wishes to
our Oxford girl, Linda. The other
day my hands were giving me
lots of problems, so I asked Linda
to peel some eggs and make
deviled eggs. I guess she needs
a hearing aid, because she made
egg salad. Ha Ha.
Also, a big one to an old friend,
June Ward. Sixteen would be my
guess, huh, June. Hope you gals
have many more.
Doggie Birthday
This might capture the attention
of column writer, Ruby.
Sweet Pea, who belongs to the
Isaacs family celebrated her
eighth birthday with all the trimmings.
Kim and Wesley Isaacs
made her a “doggie” birthday
cake which she really enjoyed.
it was “doggie” friendly. She
wore a tierra and had birthday
balloons. Happy birthday to this
little four legged animal.
SICK BAY
We are adding a new one to our
prayer list. Ken Bennett, husband
to our friend and column writer,
Sharon, of this paper. Ken is being
treated for pancreatic cancer.
Keith Riott is still being treated
for cancer. Judy Blair-Robins
has been back in the hospital.
Remember those who have already
been on the list. Please
pray the fervent prayer. To all of
you folks, we send you our finest
bouquet of wishes tied, with ribbons
of prayer.
GRIEF
To the many of you who
grieve: When the dark shadows
cover us, I am reminded of these
words from an old song: “Many
things about tomorrow, I don’t
seem to understand, but I know
who holds tomorrow and I know
who holds my hand. God bless
you all.
WHAT’S UP
What’s up with the noise. Bolts
of lightning danced across the
sky hitting the ground. A large
orange ball came dancing across
my dining room. It scared the living
daylight out of me. I thought
everyting was burned out. Even
my kids saw it from their homes.
I would not learn until the next
day what the damage was. No
water, burned out wires. Thankfully,
it has been repaired.
RAGING INFERNO
A few days later, still on Dogwood
Heights, a small trash fire
became a raging inferno. My aid,
Linda, from Oxford was closing
windows to keep the smoke out.
I looked out and saw a brigade of
water buckets trying to control
the fire. We know from “Little
House on the Prairie” that this
just doesn’t work. Buckets and
water hoses were no match for
this fire. The next time I looked,
it was an inferno. Richard’s mobile
home next to his house went
up in minutes. It was gone. Like a
hungry wolf, the flames engulfed
it and then pushed on towards
my sister’s place and then back
towards mine. Someone called
911, and the fire department was
sent out. In a short time, Southern
Stone County Fire trucks
and others were on the scene. I
believe there were at least seven
trucks. They were efficient and
professional and were able to
bring the fire under control.
We were very thankful to all of
them who helped fight this fire.
Erica, our little McDonald farm
girl managed to save her two pet
chickens, but lost her setting of
eggs and three baby kittens.
We could feel the intense heat
from the fire and saw how quickly
it was able to take over, and we
thank God because it could have
been so much worse. Thanks,
again, to the Southern Stone
County Fire Department and all
who helped to contain this fire.
WHOOPS
Last week, I mentioned Kirby
Hedrick in my column. It came
out as Kirby Hendrick. Sorry
about that, I think. HA. Until
next time, God’s blessings to
all of you and remember, even
though the bunny has left, the
Easter eggs have been eaten ---
Congratulations
Marshall Osborne
Marshall Osborne 13 year
old 120lb Free Style Wrestler
33 wins, 15 pins, 13 losses.
For Nixa Jr. High School 12
wins, 7 pins and 6 losses.
Marshall Osborne, youngest son
of Christina and Terry Osborne,
and youngest grandson of Charles
and Karen Mitchell, 120lb, 13
years old, 7th grade at Nixa, won
3rd place at Districts for Folk
style Wrestling. He also took 3rd
place in Regionals, giving him the
chance to wrestle at State in Columbia
Mo, for the third year in a
row. Marshall lost the first round
then won the next two matches
on Saturday March 27. Then on
Sunday March 28, he lost his 4th
match which knocked him out to
wrestle a 5th match to place. The
boy who beat Marshall the first
round took 2nd place (probably a
14 year old 8th grader).
Overall this year in USA Wrestling,
Marshall won 33 times, pinning
15 of the matches. He lost
only 13 times, getting pinned only
once. Most of his losses were only
by 1-4 points. When he won, if he
did not pin them, he would score
17-3 points. Also, for Nixa the
seventh grade Junior High matches
this year, Marshall won 12 times,
pinning 7 of them. He lost 6 times,
4 of them were by a Branson 14
year old 8th grader and 6 inches
taller than Marshall. The Branson
boy would beat him by only 2 or
4 points.
I think Marshall could whip me,
(his Grandpa Charlie). Grandson
Marshalls wrestling in Columbia
had 1050 boys wrestling all in different
weight classes 14 years and
under.
In all my years of coaching and
playing basketball, fast-pitch,
slow-pitch and co-ed softball,
track, wrestling and boxing in
school, and even now as a 57 year
old playing in open and church
leagues in basketball and softball,
I haven’t been whipped or beat too
many times.
This year Clever Basketball
team made it to state three years
in a row winning 4th place and
3rd place in 2008. Since 1953, the
Clever Basketball team has been
to the State Play-offs 16 times.
In 1956, the team (consisting of
seniors: Glen Dale Peebles and
Carol Compton, juniors: Paul Solomon,
Jerry Maples, Bob Hays,
J.C. Compton, David Wampler
and Denny Hicks, and sophomores:
Ray Wilson and Charles
Mitchell went to the State Playoffs
taking 4th place. Ray and I
(Charles Mitchell) didn’t start but
got to play quite a bit. We should
have, could have if we went to the
Marshall Osborne in Red, in
Columba for USA State Wrestling
Tournament, two wins and two
losses.
Districts at Ozark - Marshall
won four matches but lost to Diamond.
This is the same boy in the
first match. He wouldn’t wrestle
and kept running out of bounds
on Marshall until the final 30 seconds
then he scored two points.
But this picture Marshall beat
him in points - when Marshall
gets hold of you, you don’t very
often get loose.
final four. In 1957, 1958, 1981 my
Son Anthony’s team and 1982,
1953 and all the other years that
Clever teams won the 1st game,
then lost the 2nd game which consisted
of now 16 teams total and
three to the final four. Also Clever
should have gone 4 to 10 times
more should have could have if,
my Brother Paul in 1959, 1960
and my son Anthony in 1978, and
1980 - probably the best team that
came out of Clever but got beat by
Walnut Grove for 1st place in the
Clever Regional who could not
miss. I wonder who would come
out on top if all teams had three
point shots.
I think it would be either 1957
or 1981 but who knows it may
have been the class of 1953 team
- Billy Wayne Fugitt, James Kerr,
John Bussard, Frits Westerman,
Jay Luce, John Ed Kerr, Leroy
Wilson and I don’t remember the
rest. This year Jeremy Dresslaer is
now in the five top scoring boys
for Clever. I don’t know the order
but by the year Gary Blair, Kent
Hedgepath, Anthony Mitchell,
Chris Flood and his team went to
the state four years in a row in 87,
88, 89 and 90, and this year Jeremy
Dresslaer. Anthony would
have at least 200 more points but
he missed four games going to
Florida Baseball Camp also Coach
Smith took Anthony and Stan
Grassesser (two very good freshman)
off the A starting five, after
10 games, Anthony averaged over
60% shooting and 17 points per
game the first five games that year
1978 and they probably would
have beat Marionville, if they both
were still on the main five. Marionville
only beat them five points
in the Regional in State Play offs.
Clever boys won 19 games, lost
18 - keep winning Clever boys
and girls.
