Bruce loved working as a purchasing manager at Ride the Ducks in Branson, motorcycle riding, wood working, boating, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Our sincere thanks to the St. John’s Hospice for their fantastic care, especially our loving nurse Kari V.; and also to our special friends Debbie and Greg Boulware for all their help, love and support. Cremation was under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home-South, Kimberling City. No funeral services are planned. The ashes of Bruce will be scattered at a private family ceremony in spring of 2012. Missouri’s paddlefish season starts March 15 and runs through April 30. The daily limit is two. The minimum length limit is 34 inches on the Lake of the Ozarks, Harry S. Truman Lake, Table Rock Lake and their tributaries. On all other waters, the minimum length limit is 24 inches. Sublegal fish must be returned to the water unharmed immediately. Paddlefish are measured from the eye to the fork of the tail. These large fish (current state record 139 lbs. and 4 oz. from Table Rock Lake), were initially found throughout much of the central U.S. and were particularly abundant in the Missouri and Mississippi River drainage basins. As this region became settled, paddlefish became both a popular and challenging catch for anglers who caught them by snagging during the spring spawning migration. Paddlefish were popular for their meat and their caviar. Missouri’s spoonbill snaggers got a boost in their favorite spring pastime when the construction of Bagnell Dam in 1931 created a large paddlefish spawn in the Osage River. This spawn, and the spring snagging opportunities that went with it, created one of the country’s better-known paddlefish snagging opportunities. From 1958-1977, an average of 3,600 paddlefish, averaging 32 lbs. per fish – which translated into approximately 115,000 pounds of paddlefish were harvested annually during a two-month season. Details of how this fish spawned remained a mystery until Missouri Department of Conservation biologists observed and documented the process in the Osage River, near Osceola in 1960. Spawning is dependent upon weather conditions; primarily photoperiod, water temperature, and flow. Knowledge of how paddlefish reproduce became very valuable when construction began on Harry S. Bassett Fences, Decks & Remodeling Truman Reservoir in the 1970s. From the outset, it was known this project would be detrimental to paddlefish spawning in the Osage – the dam would block spawning migrations and flood historical spawning areas. As a result, MDC fisheries biologists began work on developing techniques for artificial spawning and culture of paddlefish as part of a mitigation agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To determine if a paddlefish population could be established and maintained, MDC began stocking hatchery produced fingerlings in Table Rock Lake in the 1970s. Survival of these stocked fingerlings was good and growth was excellent creating a good fishery in Table Rock Lake. Data collected from this ground-breaking paddlefish work was not only be used in Missouri, but also served as the basis for paddlefish management in other states where dams and habitat destruction were negatively impacting spoonbill reproduction and habitat. Biologists have not documented any natural reproduction of paddlefish in any of Missouri’s reservoir populations (Lake of the Ozarks, Harry S. Truman Lake, and Table Rock Lake). MDC maintains these valued sport fisheries through annual stockings. Each spring, a small number of males and females are collected from Table Rock Lake. The eggs are collected and incubated at MDC’s Blind Pony Hatchery, where the fingerlings are reared and stocked into Lake of the Ozarks, Harry S. Truman Lake, and Table Rock Lakes in the fall. The one with the old camper shell? You know, he would always try to get you to come down on your price. Some people know them as James and Dolly Friel. Still a question about who I’m referring to? Anyway, after living in Crane for about 11 years, they left and moved to Virginia. For about a year and a half they have lived with their youngest daughter who took care of them the best she could. Well, this past Friday they went back to the little town of Thayer, Missouri. That’s where we moved to when we left the St. Louis area back in 1969. Daddy’s health has been going down hill and Momma is a victim of Alzheimer’s. Thus we felt it would be for the best to admit them to the nursing home. Daddy will be in rehab to get his strength built back and Momma will get the care she needs from those who are trained to handle her condition. They are very fortunate to get a room together! They lived in Thayer for 30 years before coming to Crane and thus even there in the nursing home they are running into people who they know or who knew them or their children. That’s a favorite time for all the children! While on the Island we visited Sea Turtle, Incorporated, which is a “hospital” for rehabilitating injured sea turtles. One morning, at Nathaniel’s request, we went on a Bay Fishing Tour where we caught few fish, an eel & a string ray, but still had a nice time. Upon concluding our fishing excursion, we fed what fish we caught to some grateful pelicans… who were very entertaining! And speaking of entertainment, our shows were attended mostly by folks who are referred to as Winter Texans, coming from many of the colder-climate states and Canada. We performed a variety of tunes often opening with “Rocky Top” and “Be Assured”, then on to “St. Anne’s Reel” while Daniel introduced us all, and into an old Foggy River Boys “Memory Course” routine. That would get lots of laughs, and Dad would go into singing his signature song: “Homegrown Tomatoes”. Following that, we’d feature Hannah on her fiddle playing the “Cotton Patch Rag”. Daniel then sang a Marty Robbins song, either “Ballad of the Alamo” or “Continental Suit”. The crowds down there really loved his renditions of these songs. Next we’d bring up the younger children, Nathaniel, Maggie & Matthew, and we’d all sing the old Gene Autry song, “Uncle Noah’s Ark”. It’s lots of fun and, with the many animal sound effects, gets everyone’s attention. Maggie would then sing her new song, “What Happy Is”, which we learned from the Josties, another family band. Trish would then follow that with a Randy Travis gospel tear-jerker, “Three Wooden Crosses”. Benjamin & Hannah would then take to their instruments – mandolin & fiddle, respectively – and get stung playing “Fred Digs Up a Hornets Nest”. Nathaniel would be featured singing “The Fox”, originally a Middle English poem dating from the 15th century. Then leading into our intermission, Daniel would recite some cowboy poetry, namely “Reincarnation”, which always got much laughter, followed by anther Marty Robbins ballad, “Big Iron”. We were thankful to Greg Bailey at Stone County Recording Studio for his hard work helping us get our new gospel album, “Leaning…” We picked it up from Betty Kottkamp (who did our cover design & duplication – MTB Studios) the day before we left so had it available during our intermissions, along with our other albums: Come & Rejoice, Tomato Pickin’ and our Folk Psalms album and Companion song book. And a few of the parks offered our family ice cream during the intermission, and that always went over well with the children! Continuing with our show, we opened the second half with a comical song we learned from the Homestead Pickers at Silver Dollar City, “Bib Overalls”. Our youngest, Matthew, and his brother Nathaniel would come up on stage wearing overalls and lead that one off. It’s a fun song! Then, with all of the folks from Iowa that we seemed to have in our audiences, Hannah would take the lead on “Church in the Wildwood”. We must have met a dozen folks who’d either been there, lived close by, or been married in the “Little Brown Church”! At that point in our show, mom & dad would turn it over to Benjamin, Hannah & Daniel, who would do a bluegrass arrangement (guitar, fiddle & bass) of the classic Bob Dylan song, “Forever Young” with lead by Daniel. Next we’d bring up the two girls, Hannah & Maggie, who performed their twin fiddle tunes, “Faded Love” and in Bob Wills fashion, “Snow Deer”. Then we’d feature Hannah on her Irish set, playing two fiddle tunes learned attending O’Flaherty’s Irish Music Retreat in Midlothian, Texas. Nearing the conclusion of our show, Benjamin took his harmonica to introduce “Joshua”, a catchy gospel song featuring all the children and ending with a long & competitively sustained harmony of notes. Before our closing songs, Dad would sing his favorite hymn, “God Send Us Men.” It’s a challenge to Christian leadership – as individuals, in our families, our communities, and a prayer for our nation. The words, written by Frederick Gillman in 1909, and more appropriate now than ever, follow: God send us men whose aim ‘twill be Not to defend some ancient creed, But to live out the laws of Christ In every thought and word and deed. God send us men alert and quick His lofty precepts to translate, Until the laws of Christ become The laws and habits of the state. God send us men of steadfast will, Patient, courageous, strong and true, With vision clear and mind equipped His will to learn, his work to do. God send us men with hearts ablaze, All truth to love, all wrong to hate; These are the patriots nations need; These are the bulwarks of the state. We often closed our concerts with “Hands in Wood”, the lead sung by Daniel, followed by “Solid Rock”, a quartet piece with Hannah singing the lead. It was exciting to receive a standing ovation at about 70% of our park performances, and often an invitation to rebook for 2013.
