Bulldogs'
running back
Shirmar Jennings
breaks
a run during
the Bulldogs’
game against
the Andrews
Mustangs
Friday in
Andrews.
DOGS: Win was needed
Continued from Page 1B
Cutcheon had another solid
performance, completing
9-of-21 passes for 180 yards
and one touchdown.
Chris Salazar was Mc-
Cutcheon’s favorite target,
catching fi ve passes for 95
yards and the TD.
Of course, the Bulldogs
were more concerned about
getting their running game
going than having continued
success through the air.
Fortunately, they got their
wish.
Shirmar Jennings, who
was in the starting line-up
in place of Daniel Miller,
rushed 15 times for 70 yards
and a touchdown. Miller saw
plenty of action as well, getting
12 carries for 59 yards
and a score.
However, it took the
Dogs’ offense until the second
quarter to get going.
Andrews and Plainview
traded possessions most of
the fi rst quarter, then Masters’
fumble return kicked
off the scoring with 51
seconds left in the fi rst.
Salazar then made a jumping
catch on a fade route to
the corner with 6:45 seconds
left in the half to put Plainview
up 14-0.
Midway through the third
quarter, Jennings punched it
in from three yards out, then
Miller scored on a one-yard
run less than a minute later
after the Dogs recovered
what appeared to be an onside
kick but which actually
was a botched deep kickoff
attempt.
Andrews avoided getting
shutout when quarterback
Shane Dolgener scored on
an 11-yard run with 8:21
left to play. Plainview was
unable to do much with the
ball on its fi nal possessions,
but Andrews couldn’t either.
The Mustangs didn’t fi nd the
end zone again until there
was less than a minute left
on the clock.
When the fi nal horn
sounded, that same shock
was ninth overall in a time
of 13:11. Right behind her
in 11th was junior Daisy
Guerrero, who clocked in at
13:18.
The JV girls were led by
freshman Savannah Rosas,
who fi nished sixth, and
runner of the week Shamara
Austin, who fi nished 13th
with a time of 14:50.
In the boys JV division,
junior Jacobsin Enriquez was
runner of the week, running
21:13 on a course that was
3.3 miles since the leader
missed a turn and all the
runners followed, making
the course about 600 meters
longer.
that surged through the Bulldogs
after Masters’ initial
touchdown made a second
appearance as the gravity of
the win sunk in.
“We needed this to keep
us going,” Jennings said.
“We’re going to feed off this
momentum.”
If the Dogs didn’t fi nd
some momentum, it could’ve
have been another long
season.
“Without this win tonight,”
Hinojos said, “it
would be extremely diffi cult
to continue to get the type of
effort that we’re getting from
our kids. I really think that
not winning tonight would
have set us a back a bit too
far. But the fact that we won,
I think propels us forward
into Big Spring.”
NFL: Your 2011 Super Bowl champions are . . .
season of “Scrubs” (which I don’t
consider actually part of the “Scrubs”
universe because of all the nonsense
it tried to pull) and anything on ABC
Family.
But without Peyton Manning, the
Colts are missing a huge piece of a
puzzle. Even when Manning makes
it back, will he be rusty? Will he still
be Peyton Manning, the legend who
last season became the fi rst player to
ever make the playoffs by himself?
Come on. The Colts would be in the
bottom group playing for Andrew
Luck if Manning didn’t have time
left on his contract and the promise
that he could come back and be the
same guy (see Tom Brady after his
knee surgery). I’ve thought superstars
(Tiger Woods) could come back
from an extended period of absence,
but I think we all know how that has
turned out.
The rest of these teams are just
mediocre. They are like all the “summer
blockbusters” this year. They
all had an interesting plot, a unique
idea or Olivia Wilde, but they were
missing something. Consequently,
the studio should be forced to give
me my money back for watching “30
Minutes or Less.”
I also know I took the Bears all the
way from the NFC Championship
game and moved them out of the
postseason, but come on, do you really
think the Bears should have made
it to the NFC Championship game
last season? Plus, the Bears’ biggest
weapon, Devin Hester, is basically
useless due to the awesome new
kickoff rule.
One team that could surprise from
this group and make the postseason:
the Tampa Bay Bucs. Also, the Lions
will be better this year. Not good, but
better.
The Just Missed the Playoffs
Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos
The Broncos aren’t good enough to
win the division away from San Diego
and they can’t win the wild card
because of teams like the Jets, Ravens
and Steelers, plus they might cave to
fan pressure and let Tim Tebow play
only to remember why he is third on
the depth chart.
The Making the Dance
New England Patriots, Houston
Texans, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh
Steelers, San Diego Chargers,
Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys,
New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons,
St. Louis Rams
The Texans fi nally make the playoffs.
Yeah! It’s all the usual suspects
here, with the Rams crashing the
party because they are the only decent
team in the NFC West.
The Super Bowl Contenders
Green Bay Packers, N.Y. Jets
It’s hard to go against the defending
champions, especially when they
won the Super Bowl in the fashion
they did with injuries all around and a
late-season surge.
For the Jets, even though Mark
Sanchez is the worst quarterback on
a good team in the NFL (seriously,
transplant any QB from those making
the playoffs and you’re likely to
improve the Jets by a touchdown a
week), but they’ve been to the AFC
Championship Game the last two
seasons. Third time’s a charm, right?
The Champs
The Packers
Aaron Rodgers is ready to put
another nail in the coffi n of Brett
Favre’s legacy in Green Bay. Incidentally,
the Packers should totally
have a real coffi n made up for this. It
would be hysterical.
Pioneers go 3-0 at Warrior Challenge
MUSKOGEE, Okla.
— The Wayland Baptist
Pioneers went 3-0 this
weekend at the Warrior
Challenge in Bacone College
on Friday and Saturday.
In fact, the Pioneers
didn’t lose a game.
The Pioneers (5-1)
concluded the Warrior
Challenge on Saturday
with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-15
sweep of Bethel College.
The duo of Kate Trejos
and Tatiana Gonzalez
dominated Bethel, picking
up 14 and 13 kills,
respectively. Natasha
Giacomazzi handed out 33
assists.
The Pioneers return to
tournament action Friday
when they will compete
in the Lady Buff Classic
at West Texas A&M in
Canyon. Wayland opens
play against host WT at
12:30 p.m. Friday followed
by a match against
New Mexico Highlands at
4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Pioneers
take on Eastern New
Mexico at 12:30 p.m. then
round out the tournament
against Oklahoma Panhandle
State at 4 p.m.
In Friday’s matches at
the Warrior Challenge,
Trejos began her domination
of the challenge and
led the Pioneers to wins
over Avila University (25-
20, 25-23, 25-18) and host
Bacone (25-18, 25-16,
25-16).
A senior from Bogota,
Colombia, Trejos put
down 34 kills in the two
matches, many in convincing
fashion. She also
recorded 20 digs and had
four blocks.
Against Avila, the
WBU netters led throughout
the fi rst game but
trailed until late in the
second when two newcomers,
freshman Ashley
Duff and sophomore
Giacomazzi, combined for
fi ve kills to fi nally put the
Pioneers on top.
Trejos, who had six
kills on 21 attempts in the
second game, turned it on
in the third, nailing seven
of her 12 attacks. She
fi nished with a total of 19
in the afternoon match.
The Pioneers had a
season-high 8 1/2 blocks
in the contest against the
Catholic university from
Kansas City, Mo., led by
Duff with fi ve. Tatiana
Gonzalez was credited
with 19 digs, and Giacomazzi
added 16.
A transfer from New
Mexico State, Giacomazzi
averaged 12 assists a set
in the two matches with
36 against both Avila and
Bacone.
Wayland had a much
easier time against
Bacone, which often fell
victim to its own mistakes.
While the Pioneers had
a .306 hitting percentage,
the Maidens’ barely hit
for a positive percentage,
ending up at .064. In the
second game, WBU did
not make an error on the
attack, netting 19 kills on
36 attempts.
Trejos had seven of
those 19 kills. Senior
Kimberli Harger nailed
down fi ve points on her
seven tries during the
middle game, and Gonzalez
added four more.
Ryan Thurman/Plainview Herald
The Wayland Baptist Pioneers' Kimberli Harger gets a kill during the
Coca-Cola Classic last weekend. The Pioneers won all three of their
matches at the Warrior Challenge at Bacone College this weekend.
