Floydada beats Lockney 29-8 in Battle of Floyd County
FLOYDADA — The
Floydada Whirlwinds have
turned into the Jordan
Woody show.
After recording 285 yards
and four touchdowns on
seven catches in a losing
effort to Sunray in Week 0,
Woody again took center
stage as he helped the
Whirlwinds to a 29-8 win
over the Lockney Longhorns
on Friday.
Woody was unable to
duplicate his receiving
performance from last week,
but he found other ways to
get Floydada (1-1) in the end
zone.
“They had at least two on
me all the time,” Woody,
who only had two catches
for 39 yards, told the Lubbock
Avalanche-Journal.
“But you just got to fi nd
other ways to score.”
Woody scored his fi rst
touchdown on a 32-yard
punt return late in the third
quarter and then put the
’Winds up 22-0 with a oneyard
run early in the fourth.
With Woody so heavily
covered, Floydada quarterback
Jose Martinez turned to
his other receivers. Martinez
found Michael Cisneros late
in the fi rst quarter for a 24-
OLTON — Olton head coach Joel Baker
compared his team to an old truck last
week.
After losing to Tulia 28-14 in Week 0,
Baker told his players they needed to change
the battery, the carburetor and replace the
headlights.
The coach used that same analogy for his
team this week, but after a 21-0 shutout of
Farwell, the repairs needed for the old truck
weren’t so dire.
As Baker is fond of saying: “Winning
helps cure everything.
“We still have some corrections to make,
but we’re slowly getting the parts changed
we need to (in order) to get moving in the
right direction.”
While the win wasn’t the picture of perfection,
the Mustangs (1-1) executed better
offensively and defensively than they did in
Week 0.
Olton picked up 243 yards of total offense.
Tommy Guerrero paced the Mustangs,
completing 13-of-26 passes for 138
yards. He also rushed for 67 yards and a
touchdown. Bill Ross scored the other two
Mustang TDs.
Pecos Martin caught fi ve passes for 41
yards and returned six punts for 114 yards.
Olton hosts Dimmitt at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
PETERSBURG — The
Petersburg Buffaloes routed
the Paducah Dragons 66-16
on Friday to extend their
regular-season winning
streak to eight games. The
last time the Buffs’ lost a
regular-season game was to
Borden County in Week 4 of
last season.
Petersburg head coach
Joseph O’Malley likes the
direction his team is heading,
but is adamant that there is
still plenty of work to be done.
“We did some positive
things,” O’Malley said. “I
think it was a big step up in
competition from the previous
week, and some things
were exploited this week
that we couldn’t see last
week, so we were able to
learn as we went.”
And while it may sound
like a generic coach’s comment,
O’Malley was most
pleased with his team’s
effort.
“I thought we were pretty
tenacious on the defensive
side of the ball,” he said.
“That’s one of the things
we’ve lacked over the years
— fi nding that intensity to
play hard on every play.”
Todd Smith led the Buffs
with 125 yards and three
touchdowns on the ground
and completed 4-of-6
passes for 87 yards and
three scores. And after not
touching the ball in Week 0,
Thomas Roden caught three
passes, all of which resulted
in touchdowns.
Petersburg (2-0) will try
to extend its winning streak
to nine as the Buffs travel to
Lubbock Harmony this week.
he ran in a touchdown late in
the fourth quarter.
Floydada head coach
Todd Bandy was happy to
see his offense playing so
well, but he’s still unhappy
with his team’s performance
on the other side of the ball.
“We’ve got to shore up
our pass defense,” Bandy
said. “I think they found our
weakness and went to it.”
Longhorns quarterback
Riley Teeter completed 10of-25
passes for 113 yards
and a touchdown.
Lockney (0-2) was looking
for a strong performance
to erase the bad memories
of its Week 0 shutout loss to
Slaton, but the Longhorns
struggled offensively. While
they eclipsed the century
mark this week and broke
onto the scoreboard, the
’Horns had two interceptions
and only reached the red
zone once.
Lockney running back
Luke Sherman collected a
team-high 60 yards on the
ground, and fl anker Marcos
TULIA — The New Deal Lions took
up 275 yards rushing en route to a 28-7 win
over the Tulia Hornets on Friday.
V.J. Gamez scored on a 61-yard run to
start the game, and New Deal never looked
back.
Anthony Pando scored the Hornets’ only
points on a fi ve-yard pass from John Martinez
with 4:57 left in the fi rst half, but New
Deal (2-0) added 14 unanswered points to
end the game.
Martinez went 15-of-31 for 145 yards, but
he also threw two picks. The Hornets (1-1)
had two fumbles to give them four turnovers
on the night. New Deal had none.
DIMMITT — They say admitting you
have a problem is the fi rst step to recovery.
After Friday’s 19-8 loss to the Dimmitt
Bobcats, the Hale Center Owls are readily
admitting they have a quarterback problem.
The Owls (0-2) used four quarterbacks
Friday in an effort to fi gure out a way to
move the ball.
It didn’t work.
Hale Center gained only 110 yards of
offense and did not score a touchdown. The
Owls’ only score came on a 51-yard interception
return by Jason Garcia late in the
second quarter.
“It was a rough night offensively for us,”
Hale Center head coach Paul Chandler said.
“We have a major quarterback issue. . . .
We’re trying to go with a more athletic one.”
Starter Troy McGann threw more interceptions
than he did completions, going
2-of-11 with three picks. That likely will
be his last start as the Owls are looking to
move Dearius Poindexter from receiver to
QB.
“He played some last night at quarterback,”
Chandler said. “He’s going to have to
in their only home game of
the year.
Hart 36, Lazbuddie 24
LAZBUDDIE — The
Hart Longhorns earned their
fi rst win of the season Friday,
holding off a late surge
by the Lazbuddie Longhorns
to escape with a 36-24 victory.
Hart (1-1) appeared to
be on the verge of sending
Lazbuddie (0-2) home early
with a 45-point rule loss, but
Lazbuddie was able to score
twice in under six minutes to
pull within a touchdown at
halftime.
Hart fended off Lazbuddie’s
advances for most of
the second half and converted
a crucial third down that
allowed the ’Horns to score
the fi nal points of the night.
On a “third and forever,”
Rosario Gonzales connected
with Isaiah Marquez to convert
the fi rst down, and on
the ensuing play Gonzales
punched it in for a fi ve-yard
touchdown.
“It was one of those deals
where you get up and you
let down a little bit and they
snuck up on us,” Roberts
said. “But I was pleased
overall. We could have just
folded in the tent, but we
bucked up and scored again
when we had to.”
The win gives Hart a shot
of confi dence heading into
its open week. The Longhorns
return to action Sept.
16 at home against Happy
when they will try to keep
their momentum moving
forward.
“If we hadn’t won (Friday)
I think we would have
been in for a long, long
drought,” Roberts said. “But
even though we let down for
a bit, I think it showed the
kids a lot about themselves,
and that they have what it
takes to win.”
Ropes 70, Kress 22
ROPES — Opening week
for the Kress Kangaroos
went about as expected Friday
night. The ’Roos made
some fi rst-game mistakes
that the Ropes Eagles took
advantage of and turned into
a 70-12 win.
But even with the mistakes,
Kress head coach
Jarrod Sowder was pleased
with his team’s performance,
especially considering they
went into the half trailing
just 24-14.
“We played really strong
and really battled back
and forth in the fi rst half,”
Sowder said.
Unfortunately in the second
half, Ropes (2-0), which
had 18 players on its roster
compared to Kress’ nine,
took advantage of that depth.
learn our system, and he’s only had a week
of practice at it.”
Despite the offensive woes, the Owls
were within a touchdown of the Bobcats
(2-0) until Johnny Ray Dones punched it
in from a yard out with 27 seconds left to
play.
“I’m proud of the defense,” Chandler said.
“We did some good things, and I think that
will give us a chance to win some games.”
The Plainview Christian Eagles’ David Landtroop (left) stiff -arms a Miami junior varsity defender during
their game on Friday in Miami. The Eagles won 38-20.
“In the third quarter, we
were in position to make the
tackle and couldn’t fi nish,”
Sowder said. “We were just
fl at worn out.”
Being worn down not only
kept Kress from being able
to make tackles, but kept the
’Roos from punching it into
the end zone from inside the
