The city’s largest service
club outdid itself Wednesday
by presenting Terry Cook,
Kimberly Brown and Dr.
presentation of two familiar
instructor in vocal music at
Wayland, sang her Irish version
of “Danny Boy,” while
masterfully providing accompaniment
for both performers.
A standing ovation was
Soroptimist Club
Soroptimist International
of Plainview held its weekly
meeting Thursday at the
Plainview Country Club.
President Amanda Curry
called the meeting to order.
Judy Gattis provided the
opening prayer, while Sherry
Tunnell led the pledges.
As the fi rst meeting of each
month is devoted to business,
Curry fi rst asked for approval
of the minutes. Following
this consideration, several
committee chairs delivered
reports. Barbara Hunt noted
two matters of correspondence,
including a thank-you
note from Teresa and Tommy
Young. Other items of
discussion included a report
on board-meeting discussions
related to the storage building
and to proper classifi cation
of retired members. Finance
reports were delivered by
Nell Williams and Brenda
Rowan.
Other committees offering
reports included Rowan’s
note that the awards posters
would be available soon, and
Carole Bell’s encouragement
to invite new members to
join Soroptomists’ efforts
to serve the community.
Gattis provided an overview
of the academic year’s fi rst
mentoring event at Lakeside
Fifth Grade Learning Center.
With 20 young ladies already
registered, Gattis noted that
the deadline for enrollment
is Monday and the fi rst
mentoring meeting is set for
October. Rowan reported
Happy Feet volunteers have
been busy purchasing shoes
for needy children, and Alice
Miller announced the need
for more Meals on Wheels
volunteers. Other active committees
had no new information
to report. Curry concluded
by noting the upcoming
programs for September.
The meeting was adjourned
with the Soroptimist
pledge. — Cindy McClenagan
Mom wants son to be kind to longtime friend
Dear Annie: My 12-yearold
son, “Mark,” is starting
middle school. He has a
semi-friend, “Scott,” whom
he met in day care years
ago. In spite of attending
different schools, they have
maintained a friendship, but
it has diminished with time.
Mark and Scott now have
little in common. Mark has
lots of friends and is involved
in several activities.
Scott, however, has few
interests, hardly any friends
and is a little odd. He is a
good kid with good parents,
but he is socially awkward.
Mark has no interest in
hanging out with Scott, who
calls frequently. He puts up
with him on occasion and
has tried to involve Scott
in things that interest him,
but Scott doesn’t share any
of Mark’s enthusiasms.
Mark and I have talked
about Scott, and I’ve done
my best to teach him to
be a good person and deal
with Scott’s diffi cult nature.
I’ve even talked to Scott's
parents about their son’s
poor social skills and have
suggested ways to teach
him how to behave in a
more acceptable manner.
(Some days, he calls Mark
every two minutes during
the course of an afternoon.)
GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) —
A small college in northern
Indiana that decided to stop
playing the national anthem
at sporting events will play
“America the Beautiful”
instead.
Jim Brenneman, president
of Goshen College,
said that “America the
Beautiful” was more
fi tting with the pacifi st
traditions of the Mennonite
Church affi liated
school and also honored
the country.
Leaders of the 1,000-student
college decided in
June to quit playing an
instrumental version “The
Star-Spangled Banner”
after starting to do so for
the fi rst time last year.
Some students and graduates
were against the song
being played because its
lyrics contain references
ANNIE’S MAILBOX
Here’s my problem: Scott
is now attending the same
middle school as Mark. I
know Mark won’t want to
socialize with him, nor will
he be keen for Scott to hang
around his friends. Middle
school has enough pressure
for kids. How can I best
guide my son? — Middle-
School Mom
Dear Mom: Kids like
Mark are highly attuned
to the social pressures of
school. He undoubtedly
believes having an “odd”
friend will complicate his
popularity. Nonetheless, it
is important that you teach
him to be compassionate
and tolerant. He doesn’t
have to hang out with Scott
or invite him to everything.
But he should be kind when
he sees him and include him
when possible. Mocking,
to using war to defend the
country.
Brenneman said the use
of “America the Beautiful”
will begin with sports
events this fall and the U.S.
SALT LAKE CITY
(AP) — A defense attorney
says two offi cials
from the polygamous
sect-run town of Colorado
City, Ariz., have pleaded
not guilty to criminal
charges stemming from
allegations that they misused
public funds.
Fire Chief Jacob Barlow
and City Manager David
Darger entered the pleas
during a Tuesday hearing
in Mohave Superior Court
in Kingman.
Barlow and Darger
were indicted separately
on charges of violating
bullying and teasing are
more if they see he has
integrity. And please talk to
Scott’s parents about having
their son evaluated for
social anxiety disorders and
Asperger’s.
Dear Annie: Some time
ago, I noticed that my wife
had a large friction burn
on her tailbone. I asked her
how that happened, and she
said it came from sitting in
the bathtub.
I may not be the brightest
guy in the world, but that
doesn’t seem a likely way
for a female to get a friction
burn on her coccyx. Does
her description sound true?
— Trusting Husband
Dear Husband: A red
mark on her tailbone could
be from banging her rear
end in the tub or doing situps
on the carpet, among
other things. Unless you
have additional reasons to
suspect your wife of misbehavior,
we’d give her the
benefi t of the doubt. And
if you do have cause to be
suspicious, please consider
counseling.
Dear Annie: I read the
the duty of a custodian of
public money, participating
in a criminal syndicate
and assisting in a criminal
syndicate.
Barlow faces 30 counts
and Darger faces 13.
letter from “Gonzo,” the
Navy retiree with the problem
neighbors, and said,
“Oh, my word, this could
have been written by me.”
I, too, am a Navy retiree.
Over the years, the neighbors
went from good to bad
to nightmarish, refl ecting
the current lack of manners
and consideration that is
common in our population.
It was our unfortunate experience
that talking to them
made matters worse. We
stayed mostly because we
had put so much into our
home. After a drug gang
moved in next door, we endured
18 months of their inyour-face
activity until the
stress became unbearable. I
realized it’s just a house and
not worth the misery.
Our solution? Three years
ago, we moved. We found
a lovely piece of property
on two acres in a small rural
town 17 miles away. It’s
the best thing ever. It keeps
the neighbors at a distance,
and we enjoy the wildlife.
My only regret is waiting
so long to move, because
the stress really took a toll
on my husband and me. —
The diocese is selling the
property to help pay the
settlement from a series of
priest sexual abuse cases.
Townspeople will vote
Oct. 4 whether to purchase
the property for $4.5 million.
On Tuesday, the town
sponsored a barbecue at
the site to let people see
what could become town
property.
Resident Katie Leary
said she supports the purchase
because she wants to
see a family-friendly park
on the lake. Another resident,
Brian McCarter, said
his taxes are already too
high and it’s not the right
time for the town to invest
in land. Town offi cials
have said the purchase
would be funded through
bonds.
