174 CHAPTER 3 The Internet and World Wide Web
3. Call a local ISP, cable provider, and DSL provider to request information on
their services. Prepare a brief report summarizing the features, benefits, and
costs of each. Which is the fastest? What, if any, are the downsides of
selecting any of the three for Internet service (such as additional equipment
purchases)?
4. Select two countries (excluding the United States) and prepare a short report
describing their basic Internet infrastructure. Are they public or commercial?
How and where do they connect to backbones within the United States?
5. We have mentioned several high-speed gigabit networks throughout this chapter.
Investigate the topic of high-speed networks on the Web and try to find the
fastest recorded network (usually used for research purposes). Then try to find
the fastest commercial network handling routine Internet traffic.
