Development and population growth have led
to rapid change over the past 50 years with
urbanization and deforestation destroying
many habitats suitable for malaria transmission.
Control efforts have also increased, particularly
in the last decade. During that time, decreases
in the number of reported malaria cases have
been seen in Bhutan, China, Democratic People’s
Republic of Korea, India, the Lao People’s
Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Philippines,
Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and
Viet Nam (Figure 3.1). The Democratic People’s
Republic of Korea and Sri Lanka are now in
trends in confirmed cases in south and south-east asia
the pre-elimination stage. There has been less
progress in more populous countries with higher
disease burdens, specifically Bangladesh,
India, Indonesia, and Myanmar, although some
progress has been documented subnationally
with the Indonesian Islands of Java and Bali,
which are aiming for elimination, as are several
states of India. As malaria retreats it has
become increasingly a problem of border areas,
partly because these areas are less developed
and have poorer access to health services but
also because infections are introduced across
borders (Map 3.2).
