Textile Damage in Astronaut Gloves
Don Schockey, Ph.D, Director, Center for Fracture Physics, SRI International
3:00–3:30 pm
Astronaut gloves must resist cutting, tearing, abrasion, and unraveling during
spacewalk activities. Currently made of liquid crystalline polyester, the yarns
in the tricot warp knit fabric are showing the effects of contact with shuttle
surfaces having off-nominal roughness. This talk describes the types of damage
sustained by gloves during spacewalks and discusses the loading conditions the
fabric must withstand.
Physiologic-Hygienic Requirements for Materials
for Astronaut Comfort in the Liquid Cooling Garment
of the Space Suit
Victor Koscheyev, Ph.D., Director, Laboratory for Health and Human Performance in Extreme
Environments and Gloria Leon, Ph.D., Professor Emerita, University of Minnesota
3:30–4:00 pm
The effectiveness of the advanced design of the space suit is highly dependent
on the effectiveness of the regulation of heat balance of the human body
under different levels of physical exertion, and for different purposes such as
entry/re-entry, extravehicular activity. The cooling garment has the closest
contact with the skin and therefore is actively involved in the process of heat
regulation, Certain progress has already been made by our group in the
physiological design of the cooling garment. These issues will be discussed in
this presentation.
