The best of the best
The opening five minutes of the movie “Top Gun” always gets
me jumping. I’ve probably watched the opening scene twenty
times. It’s amazing to see the flight operations crew perform
orchestrated hand instructions and on-deck maneuvers that enable
a high performance aircraft to take off and land in rough seas.
If you’ve seen the movie, you already know that the pilot, Maverick,
was selected to attend the U.S. Navy’s Top Gun training program.
Top Gun is a real program the Navy uses to select and train the best
of the best. Until 1997, it was headquartered just outside of San Diego
at Miramar Naval Air Base.
Thinking back on that scene, it’s is fitting to be here in
San Diego this week for IFAI Expo 2009. Gathered here are
the best of the best in the industry.
In this worldwide economic downturn, in the turmoil of
possibly the worst recession in United States’ history, the
staff of IFAI and the show exhibitors have been carefully
making plans to help our attendees—the best of the best—
successfully pilot their companies past the rough economic
seas and into the blue sky beyond.
We all dream of being “Maverick.” By attending or exhibiting
at IFAI Expo 2009, you’ve selected yourself to be a member
of the fabric industry’s “Top Gun” team. Nobody had to choose you. You
made the decision to join. Congratulations, you are among the textile
industry’s best of the best!
I have no doubt that the economy will flourish again, or of this
industry’s resolve in the face of today’s challenges. Consumers will
spend again. There will be projects to create, designs to become reality.
By choosing to be here, you are already in the cockpit, your plane is
clearing the carrier’s deck, and you are heading to blue sky.
Thank you for participating here in San Diego, and we look forward
to seeing you again in Orlando in 2010!
