how to get started With fabric structures
Thursday, Sept. 24
5:30–8:30 pm
Located at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina, Marriott Hall 1-2
This workshop offers 2.0 AIA/CES and CEHs free to licensed architects and helpful
information on the use of lightweight and durable architectural structures to make
designing–and especially building–these structures so much easier.
• Learn how fabric structures produce sustainable build environments
• See examples of a variety of fabric structure designs and experiences
• Collect simple steps to transform an idea into a realistic fabric structure
• Learn physical properties and benefits of using specialty fabrics in architectural design–PTFE
fiberglass, PVC polyester, silicone/glass, ePTFE, HDPE mesh, ETFE films and foils, and Polyolefin.
Networking Reception/Check In
5:30–6:00 pm
Sustainable Architecture–Contributions to Human
Performance, Health & Well Being
Alison Whitelaw, FAIA, LEED® AP, President, Platt/Whitelaw Architects
6:00–6:40 pm
Walk through time and review examples of fabrics that contributed to human comfort
and survival and the evolution of enhanced human performance characteristics such
as healing, learning, productivity, and joy. Identify sustainable design practices
including complex and simplistic styles, Architecture 2030; Federal & State mandates;
greening of the building codes, bioclimatic design and biomimicry. The presentation
concludes with insight on how fabric structures meet sustainability indicators.
Steps to a Successful Fabric Structure Experience
Bruce Wright, AIA, Editor, Fabric Architecture Magazine
6:40–7:20 pm
Learn the simple steps to transform an idea into a realistic fabric structure including
research strategies, design sketches, when to involve an engineer, fabrication
components, and the anatomy of a fabric structure include expected costs.
Textile Stories–See & Experience
Wayne Rendely, P.E., Engineering Consultant
7:20–8:00 pm
Architects will examine a variety of textile materials and learn their physical
properties and benefits of end use for such materials as PTFE fiberglass, PVC
polyester, silicone/glass, ePTFE, HDPE mesh, ETFE films and foils and Polyolefin.
