Pandemic rehearsal keeps JGH on its toes An aircraft, landing at Montreal- Trudeau airport, carries two passengers who display symptoms of an unfamiliar virus. The JGH is informed that the travellers will be brought to the hospital for observation and treatment. Within minutes, staff throughout the JGH are all set. Not only do the passengers get top-quality treatment, the staff who care for them— along with other JGH patients and visitors—are kept safe from the virus. That scenario hasn’t happened, but it could. And if it does, the JGH is ready. To test its preparedness, the hospital participated in a province-wide exercise, conducted by the Quebec Ministry of Health, to ensure that hospitals can deal effectively with a pandemic. The simulated enactment of the pandemic plan included participation by representative physicians, nurses, infectious disease specialists and members of security, communications and the Human Resources Department. By an interesting coincidence, the pandemic rehearsal took place one week before the outbreak of the H1N1 virus. Although that virus did not create pandemic conditions, it did provide staff with the opportunity to put their training to practical use. The acts of kindness shown by all really helped me. For example, Dr. Simcha Kleinman, the Chief of Anesthesia who was informed that I was terrified of having a panic attack on the operating table, came over while I was in the corridor outside the operating room, introduced himself and assured me that I would be well looked after by Kim, who would be by my side throughout. Dr. Kapusta’s assistant leaned over while I was on the table and introduced himself to me just before the procedure got underway which made me feel that I was not in a room with unfeeling surgical robots, but compassionate human beings. I also want to mention the remarkable patience and empathy that nurse Carole extended to me. She took the time to answer all my questions and concerns about the procedure, and her warmth and kindheartedness calmed me down immeasurably. I am awestruck by the team’s level of excellence. They functioned like a Swiss timepiece–smooth, precise, and efficient. Not only was the team medically first-rate, but also their consideration and reassurance were exemplary.
