About the Course<br />
This <strong>in</strong>novative programme presents<br />
applicants with the opportunity to<br />
study the complementary discipl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
of physical education <strong>and</strong> sports <strong>and</strong><br />
exercise science.<br />
And there has never been a more<br />
excit<strong>in</strong>g time to be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />
physical education <strong>and</strong> sport. With<br />
the London Olympics <strong>in</strong> 2012, the<br />
huge government <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong><br />
physical education <strong>and</strong> school sport<br />
<strong>and</strong> constant media attention on<br />
health <strong>and</strong> physical activity, physical<br />
education <strong>and</strong> sport <strong>and</strong> exercise science are at the lead<strong>in</strong>g edge<br />
of many key issues.<br />
Applicants to this course will have strong <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> physical<br />
education, sport <strong>and</strong> physical activity. The programme will equip<br />
students with knowledge <strong>and</strong> abilities required for careers <strong>in</strong><br />
physical education, sports development <strong>and</strong> management,<br />
coach<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the fitness <strong>in</strong>dustry as well as many other areas of<br />
employment. Successful students will also have the opportunity to<br />
progress onto further study such as the Post Graduate Certificate<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>Education</strong> (PGCE), the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), MA,<br />
MSc <strong>and</strong> PhD study.<br />
Course Structure<br />
The <strong>BA</strong>/<strong>BSc</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> & Exercise Science degree<br />
is a three year, full-time course based <strong>in</strong> Canterbury, Kent.<br />
The programme is structured <strong>in</strong> such a way as to allow for the<br />
focussed study of key discipl<strong>in</strong>es as well as the synthesis of physical<br />
education, sport <strong>and</strong> exercise science, theory <strong>and</strong> practical.<br />
Students follow two core modules, Research Methods <strong>and</strong> a<br />
Practical module, <strong>in</strong> both years 1 <strong>and</strong> 2. Students then opt for<br />
two further modules from <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> two further<br />
modules from <strong>Sport</strong> & Exercise Science <strong>in</strong> each year. In year 3, the<br />
core of the programme centres around the Individual Study.<br />
In addition to these experiences, students of the <strong>BA</strong>/<strong>BSc</strong><br />
<strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> & Exercise Science will have the<br />
opportunity to attend a week-long residential visit to an<br />
outdoor centre like the Kent Mounta<strong>in</strong> Centre <strong>in</strong> North Wales<br />
as part of their course. Students will take part <strong>in</strong> activities<br />
such as climb<strong>in</strong>g, gorge walk<strong>in</strong>g, kayak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> sea-level<br />
travers<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> & Exercise Science<br />
The <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> component of the programme will consider<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the physical doma<strong>in</strong>, provid<strong>in</strong>g a theoretical<br />
basis to work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the practical environment.<br />
Year 1: Students are guided through two further physical education<br />
modules that are designed to lay the foundations for<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this subject discipl<strong>in</strong>e. The Foundations of<br />
<strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> module aims to <strong>in</strong>troduce students to<br />
the diverse nature of current issues <strong>in</strong> the subject. The<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> module offers<br />
students a synthesis of practical <strong>and</strong> theory as they beg<strong>in</strong> to<br />
explore the process of learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> physical<br />
education.<br />
Year 2: Students can opt from a range of modules to complement<br />
their core module study. Modules <strong>in</strong>clude Assessment <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong>, Inclusive Practices <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong>,<br />
Contemporary Issues <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Physical</strong><br />
<strong>Education</strong> of Young Children. The aim of these modules is<br />
to offer a learn<strong>in</strong>g experience that builds on year 1, offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the student the opportunity to engage <strong>in</strong> key concepts <strong>in</strong><br />
more depth.<br />
Year 3: Students are given the opportunity to develop specialist<br />
knowledge. Modules such as Learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong><br />
<strong>Education</strong>, Perspectives, Values <strong>and</strong> Beliefs <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong><br />
<strong>Education</strong>, <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Practical: Knowledge, Skills<br />
<strong>and</strong> Applications cont<strong>in</strong>ue to build on prior learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
challenge the student to th<strong>in</strong>k critically about key issues <strong>and</strong><br />
concepts <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Education</strong>. Students can opt to<br />
undertake an extended <strong>in</strong>dividual study which will focus on<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a physical education context of<br />
their choice.<br />
<strong>Sport</strong> & Exercise Science is a challeng<strong>in</strong>g programme of study<br />
which <strong>in</strong>troduces students to the <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> dynamic world of<br />
sport <strong>and</strong> exercise. The programme <strong>in</strong>cludes discipl<strong>in</strong>ary study of<br />
sport <strong>and</strong> exercise psychology, the physiology of sport <strong>and</strong> exercise.<br />
Each of these discipl<strong>in</strong>e areas is supported by the study of research<br />
methods.<br />
Year 1: Students opt to study two <strong>Sport</strong> & Exercise Science<br />
modules from Introduction to <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> Exercise,<br />
Psychology, Introduction to Biomechanics, Introduction<br />
to <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> Exercise Physiology <strong>and</strong> Introduction to<br />
Sociological Perspectives on <strong>Sport</strong>.<br />
Year 2: Students opt from the follow<strong>in</strong>g modules: Psychology of<br />
<strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> Exercise, <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> Exercise Biomechanics, Skill<br />
Acquisition <strong>in</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> Exercise, <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> Exercise<br />
