• You’ll be covering record label management, music publishing, digital music<br />
management and entertainment law<br />
• In <strong>add</strong>ition <strong>to</strong> a range of business <strong>to</strong>pics, you’ll gain a specialised knowledge of <strong>the</strong><br />
industry in terms of music production, marketing and distribution<br />
• You’ll help <strong>to</strong> manage C3U Records, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s record label, coordinating and<br />
developing <strong>the</strong> label, signing new acts and working with existing C3U artists<br />
• Keep up <strong>to</strong> date with current developments within <strong>the</strong> fast-changing Music Industry,<br />
including developments in new technology and digital rights Management<br />
• Work with businesses on real projects in your final year. Many of our students find this<br />
an ideal stepping-s<strong>to</strong>ne <strong>to</strong> employment in <strong>the</strong> same organisation or sec<strong>to</strong>r<br />
• Learn essential commercial and employability skills like how <strong>to</strong> use <strong>the</strong> accounting<br />
software package Sage<br />
wHaT IS IT?<br />
This course, at Broadstairs Campus, is designed<br />
<strong>to</strong> provide you with a comprehensive preparation<br />
for potential management roles within <strong>the</strong><br />
creative and cultural industries, and specifically<br />
<strong>the</strong> music industry. Music Industry Management<br />
is a Business School programme taught in<br />
collaboration with <strong>the</strong> department of Music.<br />
wHaT wIll I STUdy?<br />
as well as music business fundamentals and<br />
marketing, in year 1 you’ll also undertake a<br />
broad range of study incorporating essential<br />
management knowledge and skills relating <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> management of people and information.<br />

In year 2 you’ll apply your general business<br />
acumen within <strong>the</strong> specialised music industry<br />
context through modules such as record<br />
label management. you’ll gain a practical<br />
understanding of concert venue management as<br />
well as <strong>the</strong> logistics <strong>to</strong> support music <strong>to</strong>urs. you’ll<br />
also study <strong>the</strong> legal framework which underpins<br />
<strong>the</strong> commercial exploitation of music in <strong>the</strong><br />
global marketplace.<br />
In year 3 you’ll fur<strong>the</strong>r enhance your knowledge<br />
of strategic management, and will have <strong>the</strong><br />
opportunity <strong>to</strong> undertake an in-depth music<br />
industry project of your choosing.<br />
How wIll IT HElp ME?<br />
as well as <strong>the</strong> focus on <strong>the</strong> music industry, you’ll<br />
gain a full range of <strong>the</strong>oretical, creative, social,<br />
technological and managerial skills and resources<br />
appropriate for employment in <strong>the</strong> music<br />
industry, and be prepared for management<br />
positions in production industries, service<br />
industries and <strong>the</strong> public sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
How wIll I BE aSSESSEd?<br />
you’ll be assessed by a number of methods<br />
including coursework, essays, case studies,<br />
business plans, group projects and presentations.<br />
a particularly innovative feature is <strong>the</strong> link with<br />
local businesses in <strong>the</strong> final stage of <strong>the</strong> degree<br />
provided by <strong>the</strong> Problem Orientated Project.<br />
Many of our students find this an ideal steppings<strong>to</strong>ne<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chosen career, and go on <strong>to</strong> work<br />
in <strong>the</strong> same organisation, or sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
wHaT wIll I nEEd To gET an oFFEr?<br />
Typical entry requirements for this course are<br />
240 UCaS points including CCC at a2 level, or<br />
equivalent. all applications will be considered on<br />
an individual basis according <strong>to</strong> qualifications,<br />
background and experience.<br />
particular importance is placed upon your<br />
general interest in music and your enthusiasm<br />
and commitment <strong>to</strong> working within <strong>the</strong> creative<br />
and cultural industries.
