Digitized for FRASER Federal Reserve Bank of St.Louis OVERVIEW OF FOREIGN INVESTMENT IN THE UNITED STATES-1990 The Office of Trade and Investment Analysis (OTLA) identified from public sources 1,018 foreign direct investment transactions that occurred during 1990. Values were reported for 476 of these individual transactions, amounting to a total of $57.6 billion. Appendices A, B, and C contain listings of all the identified transactions by U.S. industry, source country, and state location. The total number of transactions decreased by 8 percent from the 1,103 reported for 1989 (Figure 1). In value terms, the 1990 total reflected a decrease of 23 percent from the total value of $74.7 billion that was identified in 1989. In 1990, the 10 largest transactions, each over Si billion, had a combined value of $23.4 billion, 41 percent of the total value. Twenty-three transactions of $500 million or more had a combined total of $32.1 billion, 56 percent of the total reported value. Major industrialized countries were the source of most direct investment activity in the United States in 1990 as seven nations - Japan, the United Kingdom, France, West Germany, Canada, Italy, and Switzerland - accounted for 80 percent of the total number of transactions, representing 89 percent of the total identified value. There were investments from 42 source countries in 1990, with one unidentified, as compared with 46 source countries in 1989. Japan was the source country for the largest number of transactions, as it has been for the past six years. A total of 460 transactions originated in Japan, with 231 identified values totaling $20 billion. The United Kingdom was second with 117 transactions and 64 identified values totaling $11 billion. France was third in the number of transactions with 69, of which 24 had identified values of $9 billion.
