A Yank Looks at Newfoundland lVit/; the u.s. Army it, Newfoundland-Most American soldiers sent to Newfoundland, when and if they learned in advance where they were going, had only a hazy idea about this country. As a consequence, they fell back on their imaginations in an effort to draw a mental picture of the island. They usually thought of Newfoundland as a land buried under ice and snow around the year, where there is no civilization to speak of, and where Eskimos constitute a sizeable portion of the population. None of these facts is true, however. Most of the winter's snow has generally melted by April. The sun shines warmly more days of the year than you would imagine, and beautiful weather is by no means uncommon here. As far as civilization goes, there is old St. John's, the capital, a city of some 80,000 inhabitants. Here one can find churches, restaurants, theatres, shops, hotels, two daily newspapers and two radio stations. The town is quite different from any American city, and has a character all its own. There are no Eskimos here, though they are to be found in Labrador, just to the North, which is under the jurisdiction of Newfoundland. I was talking with a St. John's woman recently and By Sgt. Frank Cowles told her that many of our men when they arrived here probably expected to see Eskimos, much as Indians are seen around many towns in our west. She told me with a smile that when she saw the first American soldiers on \'Qater Street in St. John's, with their thick boots and fur parkas, she thought they were Eskimos!
