service. The veteran must be physically
and mentally able to hold
the job and must have been a bona
fide employee, not just hired to
replace a man already in the services"
If the job no longer exists
the employer is bound to offer him
whatever comparable job is available.
The Civil Service Commission
is also bound by law to give preference
to veterans who have served
in a theatre of war or who are in
receipt of a pension.
Five Methods of Benefit
Apart from the gratuity that is
paid to everyone, Jive classes of
benefits are being made available to
meet individual p,oblems. Before
the ex-service man Or woman can
draw on any of these special grants
his or her case must come up before
the rehabilitation committee in his
district.
The first type of benefit provides
for the period when discharged
members are out of work. It applies
if the person is capable of and
available for work, but unable to
obtain suitable employment. Under
it single men may draw $50 a
month, married men $70 a month,
plus allowances for children at the
same rate as service allowances.
This may be paid to a maximum of
ooe year, less for shorter service
and can be applied for during an
18-month period after discharge.
The second type of benefit enables
the veteran to take vocational

training jf training will assist in reestablishment.
If a training course
is authorized a single man or
woman will have tuition paid and
be allowed $60 a month. Married
men will get $80 a month, and in
addition dependents' allowances
may be paid.
The third grant or benefit is designed
to assist farmers and others
wishing to embark on private.enterprises.
It is recognized that in commencing
a business, or in taking
over a farm, there is a period when
the new owner must wait for returns
to come in. During this period
the veteran is eligible for grants.
Grant No.4 is planned to assist
ex-members of the forces who.
after discharge', may become tern:
porarily incapacitated and unable
to work. These cases must be authorized
by the medical authorities.
The fifth grant makes it possible
for men and women of the armed
forces to continue their education.
A plan of grants has been set up to
be used for this purpose, based on
period of service and perhaps more
essentially on scholastic effort and
qualifications. Discharged members
can be carried through not only a
university graduation, but also, in
certain outstanding cases, to the
conclusion of post-graduate work.
Provisions for Farmers
A veteran from any of the three
services in receipt of a war disability
