FROMTHEEDITOR Individual attention A question we must all have asked ourselves at one time is: what can I do about it? I am only one person. However the actions of an individual can be very signifi cant, and there are some inspiring examples to be found in this issue of PrivatAir the Magazine. Take Charlie Mayhew. As a student he fell in love with African wildlife but was horrifi ed by the activities of poachers and their eff ect on rhino and elephant in particular. He had no special qualifi cations or connections but knew he personally would have to do something. Th e result was Tusk, well known internationally today and supported by, among others, Prince William of Wales, now Duke of Cambridge. As it happens, John Rendall, who writes here about Antarctica, is no stranger to the charity’s work. He has supported conservation in Africa since his hero, George Adamson, rehabilitated Rendall’s own pet lion, Christian. However in this issue he has moved south from Africa and is hoping to draw our attention to the less well understood fragility of Antarctic ecosystem. His aim will ring a bell with PrivatAir pilot Daniel Lüscher, who, partly because he could actually look down and see snow and ice receding as he went about his work, knew he JOHNRENDALL Rendall is the co-author of Christian the Lion, the international bestseller about a cub raised in Chelsea and later released in Kenya. Rendall is a trustee of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust which funds and administers the Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania and Kora National Park in Kenya. He lives in London and his native Sydney. CONTRIBUTORS JOHNROSS Born in Malta and now based in London, John has been shooting famous brands in glamorous locations for over two decades. He recently worked for Yamaha in Milan, went to South Africa to shoot a TDK campaign and shot the cover for the latest Pet Shop Boys album, Disco 4. He is the recipient of numerous media-industry awards. PRIVATCONTRIBUTORS needed to act. He went on to set up the organisation myblueplanet in his home country, Switzerland. Its message is that each of us must act now in our own daily lives to help save the world. Again, like Charlie Mayhew, he had no training and no great resources apart from his own energy and passionate conviction, but is being supported in his work by PrivatAir, who allow him the time off to work on the project. Other outstanding examples of individuals making a diff erence can be found in the art world. Nicholas and Athena Karabots in America and Jonathan Ruff er in Britain are examples of successful individuals deploying private resources in a positive manner for the sake of art and posterity. Finally we come to the Prince of Wales himself. Th e beautiful Highgrove Florilegium, a book which has now been completed after many years in the making, supports individual botanical artists, bookbinders and craftsmen but also champions the wild and garden fl owers the Prince loves, while supporting his Charities Foundation. Most copies will go to museums but individuals can buy the few that are left. Or why not just plant some wildfl owers yourself? CELESTRIANOEL Ten HUONMALLALIEU Having begun his career at Christie’s he went on to author The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists, Understanding Watercolours, The Illustrated History of Antiques, and more recently, 1066 and Rather More: a Walk through History. A well-known art market journalist, he writes for The Times and has a weekly column in Country Life. SUMMER EDITOR Celestria Noel DESIGNDIRECTOR Julia Murray DESIGNER Wil Griffi ths PHOTOGRAPHYDIRECTOR Alex Ortiz PICTUREEDITOR Patrick Llewellyn SUB-EDITOR Steve Handley PRODUCTIONMANAGER Antonia Ferraro REPROGRAPHICS KFR Reprographics PRINTING Taylor Bloxham LOGISTICS www.goferslogistics.com GROUPPUBLISHING DIRECTOR Angus Urquhart CREATIVEDIRECTOR Michael Keating PUBLISHINGDIRECTOR Simon Leslie CHIEFOPERATINGOFFICER Hugh Godsal CHIEFEXECUTIVE Jeff rey O’Rourke PUBLISHEDBY Ink, www.ink-global.com +44 (0)20 7613 8777 FOR PrivatAir SA Chemin des Papillons 18 PO Box 572, 1215 Geneva 15 Telephone +41 (0)22 929 6700 Fax +41 (0)22 929 6701 info@privatair.com www.privatair.com © Ink.
