Resident Spotlight
By Kay A. Fusco
A HAPPY NEW YEAR
TO EVERYONE!
This month’s spotlight
is on Val Austin She
was born and brought
up in White Plains,
NY and attended NYU
obtaining her BS degree
in Elementary Ed She
taught in NY for about
18 years and in Collier
County another 15,
specializing in ESOL
students (Educating
Students of Other Languages), and special education.
In ’85 the family moved to Naples, built a home
in Pelican Bay and lived there for 12 years After the
children graduated from college, they sold the home
and for almost the next 10 years traveled the northern
continent via a 40’ motor home In 2005 Val Moved to
VeronaWalk
Colorado and California, two of her most favorite
states, she reminded me that she doesn’t want to forget
the beauty of Canada and Mexico She has traveled
abroad from time to time but her favorite form of travel
is the ‘cruise’ Most recently, several cruises have been
enjoyed with a 14 day transatlantic trip one stopping
in Portugal and ending in Barcelona where she spent a
week experiencing the Spanish traditions
Although her first passion is traveling ; tennis,
swimming, and exercising occupy much of her time,
and they only pale by her love for her incredible
friends
In December 2010, Val underwent ‘bi-lateral’
hip replacement and by Feb 2011, she was back
on the tennis courts At this time, she feels she has
recuperated 100% and wishes to thank every one of her
special friends who supported her throughout the long
process of healing
Val is the mother of two sons and grandmother to
Reid, age 6 and Ean age 2
After her daily tennis, she has been seen driving her
golf cart, walking dogs, cat-sitting, babysitting, and
when the need arises, she does airport runs This keeps
her busy in between finding life extremely satisfying
when she is helping others in need
like dance in slow motion It is easy to learn
restaurant Update
CAFÉ VERONA
WHERE NEIGHBORS MEET
As many of you have already heard, the Board of
Directors is excited to announce that we have new
resident owners / operators for the restaurant and it will
be called Café Verona Resident owners Ed Huber,
Bryan James and Pete Rossi are putting their many
years of experience in the food and beverage industry
to work in our community They are committed to
CAFÉ VERONA
exceeding the expectations of the community with
exciting new menu items, pricing, specials, and
even fun opportunities for residents to participate
by providing their own recipes or serving as guest
Where Neighbors Meet
bartender, host or hostess, etc
In addition to the changes above, you will also notice
some renovations to the restaurant itself, which are
sure to enhance the overall dining experience The
renovation plans have been finalized, submitted to
Collier County Permitting and approved Construction
has already begun with an expected Grand Opening in
early 2012
The Board of Directors is excited about the changes
coming to Café Verona and we look forward to seeing
everyone at the Grand Opening Celebration!
A Message from the town Manager
Dear Residents;
It seems like every other issue of
the VivaVerona I am being asked
to write an article about people
allowing their dogs to run without
a leash and not picking up their
dog waste
Every annual meeting I find
myself talking about this issue
I know I have and other home owners have stopped
people on the street to say the dog must be on a leash
and to ask where is your bag to pick up the dog waste
We have two doggy waste stations at the town center
supplying bags and containers to throw away the waste
There are numerous signs around the town center and
over by the Caymans
Even with all this effort to get the message across the
noise is louder than ever from residents disgusted with
those who do not have their dogs on a leash and do not
pick up their dog waste
Residents do not understand how those with dogs
can allow their dogs to do their business on other
homeowner’s lawn and not their own lawn Excrement
kills sod
Collier County Law states dogs and cats are not
allowed to run loose and dogs and cats are not allowed
to create a sanitary nuisance
You may love your dog but that does not mean your
neighbor does
We have residents that are afraid of dogs It even
scares them when the dog is on one of those retractable
long leashes because they are afraid the dog will jump
on them before the owner of the dog can get the dog
under control Please be respectful to others with
regards to your pet
When you obtained your animal you made a
commitment to care for your animal When you bought
in VeronaWalk you made a commitment to follow the
rules and regulations
This has become a very serious issue here at
VeronaWalk and it really does not need to be Please
be respectful to others with regards to your pet Please
help VeronaWalk stay the beautiful community it is
The basic rule in theater is if you want the audience
to “get” a message, you say it three times So to
reiterate, please be respectful to others with regards to
your pet
lap pool committee
An eight member sanctioned lap pool committee
has been formed to assist management and the home
owners in improving conditions at the lap pool and
making the lap pool a safe environment for all who
wish to use the facility for its intended purpose As
with the gym aerobic equipment, a 30 minute lap time
restriction is now in place to accommodate awaiting
swimmers For health standards, the pool temperature
will be maintained at 83 degrees And, for a healthy
environment we remind residents that they MUST
SHOWER before entering the lap pool to wash off
excess lotion that can clog swimmers tear ducts, and
enter the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth Flotation devices
including kick boards are not allowed in the lap pool
(The only exception is an official size kickboard that
must be used as part of a lap swim routine If this
rule is abused then the use of kickboards will not be
allowed). Like the gym and tennis courts, the lap pool
is a designated non-smoking site for physical exercise:
more specifically for lap swimming which is commonly
defined as continuous swimming motion between pool
ends Because there are only four narrow swim lanes
and an expanding number of homeowners who have
purchased in our community to use the lap pool for
this intended purpose, we remind you that the resort
pool, not the lap pool, is for those residents who wish
to, socialize, hang out, cool-off, or do an occasional
lap There is NO DIVING in the lap or the resort
pool Unfortunately, an increasing number of residents
have stretched the rules by loitering in the lanes, or by
doing an occasional lap before coming to rest at the
with all the details
end of the pool where they hang out, preventing others
from entering their lane Although this may not have
presented a problem in the past, with our development
reaching full capacity, hanging out anywhere in the
lap pool is becoming an unacceptable problem Non
overnight guests must be accompanied by resident
and are only permitted to using the lap pool between
11:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. Those who use the umbrella
tables are reminded that it is their responsibility to
close their umbrella before leaving the pool area
Compliance reduces confrontation and enhances
harmony within our community We ask your full
support in this matter Thank you for your support and
cooperation
of the lap facility, please contact Jim Nangle, special
