“Up, up and away,” I sang, channelling the old
Nimble advert, “in my beautiful balloon.” My
shopping mission, which had put the song in
my head, was to find ‘things that go in the sky’
(they’re a vague lot at Viva). I was spoilt for choice
at Bright Ideas: gliders, a paper plane set with
sixty planes, a bubble rocket and pocket kites,
many at pocket-money prices.
The Gift & Card Co. is the go-to place for balloons,
starting with a basic helium one for £1.25.
Pretty personalised foil ones are just £4.50. Or see
if you can get airborne with their deal - twenty
balloons for twenty quid – like the old guy in the
movie Up, which should have had the Nimble ad
as its theme tune.
Skylark suggested “seeds to grow beans up to
the sky” but I felt they were playing fast and
loose with my theme. However they have, or can
quickly get, some wonderful sky-related books
such as the Cloudspotter’s Guide and the incredible
Chasing the Sun: A History of the Star that Gives Us
Life. For younger sky-watchers Bags of Books
offer many options including, The Pop-up, Pull-out
Space Book, and the beautiful picture-book, Louis
Dream Plane.
Pine Chest have a covetable hot-air balloon paper
lamp-shade for just £6.99. And Intersport have
a whole ‘air’ section: space hoppers, archery sets,
rockets you stomp on which shoot up huge distances,
and blow pipes which, alarmingly, purport
to be ‘or outdoor and indoor use.’ BM
