PCB 5727L Comparative Animal Physiology I Laboratory<br />

structures, phenomena, a and concepts involved in regulation<br />

PCB 5924 Biology Seminar<br />

Seminar topics from a diverse spectrum <strong>of</strong> current biological<br />

research will be presented by a variety <strong>of</strong> speakers from UWF,<br />

national and international academic research instructors and<br />

agencies. Offered concurrently with PCB 4922; graduate<br />

students will be assigned additional work<br />

PCB 6074 Experimental Design in Biology<br />

3 sh (may not be repeated for credit)<br />

Prerequisite: STA 4173<br />

Covers experimental design in relation to the analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

biological data. Topics include sources <strong>of</strong> error, variation in<br />

biological systems, replication and pseudoreplication, controls,<br />

multiplicity, sample size and randomization. The physical<br />

layout <strong>of</strong> biological experiments in the field and laboratory<br />

will be discussed in relation to basic parametric data analysis<br />

techniques<br />

PCB 6943 Internship in Biotechnology<br />

3-6 sh (may be repeated for up to 6.0 sh <strong>of</strong> credit)<br />

An internship in biotechnology or related industry. Students<br />

will work on a problem related to management, development<br />

or administration <strong>of</strong> a program in biotechnology or to research<br />

in biotechnology. Prior completion <strong>of</strong> the graduate level core<br />

courses in the MS Biology/Biotechnology Fast Track is required.<br />

Internship is mandatory for students in the non-thesis Fast Track<br />

program. A written report on the internship experience will be<br />

presented orally to a committee selected by the student’s course<br />

supervisor. Graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis only.<br />

Permission is required<br />

Introduction to the brain and its relationship to behavior and<br />

experience. Topics covered: structure and function <strong>of</strong> the<br />

nervous and endocrine systems, sensation/perception, emotion<br />

and motivation, thinking and consciousness, learning and<br />

memory, malfunctions <strong>of</strong> the mind. Credit cannot be received in<br />

both PSB 4002 and PSB 4003<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> biological and sociocultural determinants <strong>of</strong> sexual<br />

development throughout the human life span. Special emphasis<br />

is given to sexual orientation, sexual preference, sexual<br />

Biological bases <strong>of</strong> mind and behavior: History and methods<br />

<strong>of</strong> cognitive neuroscience; evolutionary perspectives on<br />

cognition; neural substrates <strong>of</strong> development and motor control,<br />

attention and perception, learning and memory, language and<br />

consciousness, cerebral lateralization and specialization<br />

PSB 6089 Brain and Mind: Fact and Fantasy<br />

Seminar focusing on controversial issues in psychobiology<br />

<strong>of</strong> human information processing. Topics typically covered<br />

concern the relationship between the brain and consciousness,<br />

intelligence, memory and other mental processes<br />

PSY 2012 General Psychology<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> methods, theories, and body <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

contemporary psychology, including such topics as learning,<br />

motivation, sensation and perception, development, thinking,<br />

personality, social behavior, psychological adjustment, and<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> therapy. (General Studies Course: SS/BEH)<br />

PSY 2023 Careers in Psychology<br />

1 sh (may not be repeated for credit)<br />

Prerequisite: PSY 2012<br />

Will provide students with an overview <strong>of</strong> the discipline <strong>of</strong><br />

psychology, including expectations for the psychology major,<br />

career options for students completing a bachelor degree<br />

in psychology, and career options for students who pursue<br />

a graduate degree in psychology. Skills required for library<br />

research, writing in the style <strong>of</strong> the American Psychological<br />

Association, and ethical and pr<strong>of</strong>essional issues will be<br />

discussed<br />

PSY 2948 Service Learning Field Study I<br />

1-3 sh (may be repeated for up to 4.0 sh <strong>of</strong> credit)<br />

Placement in community agency or other social organizational<br />

setting related to field <strong>of</strong> study. Supervision by faculty and<br />

agency. Students and faculty "customize" courses to fit a full<br />

range <strong>of</strong> services that are available in the setting. Student must<br />

be able to draw correlation between the discipline and field<br />

study. Journal and reflective experience paper are required. With<br />

the agreement <strong>of</strong> the student’s faculty sponsor, a minimum <strong>of</strong> 4-6<br />

hours per week must be done at the field site per semester hour<br />

<strong>of</strong> credit. Permission is required
