This certificate is designed to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> public health<br />

practitioners who have collateral responsibility for worker safety<br />

and health as well as those assigned primary responsibility.<br />

The student will gain a broad based foundation in occupational<br />

safety and health that enhances recognition, evaluation and<br />

control <strong>of</strong> workplace hazards. Management tools and skills are<br />

identified and explored that can be implemented in the public<br />

practice health practitioner’s work environment to bring about<br />

improvements in worker safety and health.<br />

Reading<br />

The Reading Education Master’s Degree is an innovative,<br />

educational program that links literacy research to practical<br />

classroom practices. This 36-semester hour program is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered online, nationwide as an advanced degree program<br />

for credentialed teachers. The curriculum for the program is<br />

based on the International Reading Association standards<br />

which also encompass the <strong>Florida</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education<br />

Reading Endorsement and certification requirements. This<br />

advanced program requires several field experiences which<br />

may be arranged through the School <strong>of</strong> Education Graduate<br />

Advising Office. Upon program completion, candidates are<br />

encouraged to add the Reading Endorsement/Certification to<br />

their teaching certificate. The program is approved for both the<br />

K-12 Reading Endorsement and Reading Certification by the<br />

<strong>Florida</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />

The M.Ed. in Reading Education is designed to prepare<br />

educators as reading teachers, reading coaches, district-level<br />

literacy specialists, and publishing industry consultants. New<br />

cohorts are admitted in the summer and fall <strong>of</strong> each year. The<br />

application deadline for summer admission is March 1. The<br />

application deadline for fall admission is June 1.<br />

Reading is a critical shortage area, and teacher education<br />

students may be eligible for the Critical Teacher Shortage Loan<br />

Forgiveness Program and/or the Critical Teacher Shortage<br />

Tuition Reimbursement Program.<br />

Based on the International Reading Association’s Standards for<br />

Reading Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, this program integrates course work and<br />

clinical experiences to prepare graduates in the following areas:<br />

• Foundations <strong>of</strong> reading and writing processes and instruction<br />

• Instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum<br />

materials to support reading and writing instruction<br />

• Assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective<br />

reading instruction<br />

• Integration <strong>of</strong> foundational knowledge, use <strong>of</strong> instructional<br />

practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials,<br />

and the appropriate use <strong>of</strong> assessments<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

In addition to the <strong>University</strong> graduate admission requirements<br />

described in the Admissions section (p. 10) <strong>of</strong> the catalog,<br />

the applicant must meet the following minimum departmental<br />

admission requirements for provisional admission:<br />

• Hold a pr<strong>of</strong>essional teaching certification<br />

• Have earned a GPA <strong>of</strong> at least 3.0 on bachelor’s degree*<br />

• Submit a current (within five years) <strong>of</strong>ficial Graduate Record<br />

Exam (GRE) verbal score OR Miller Analogies Test (MAT)<br />

score<br />

• Submit a letter <strong>of</strong> intent that includes the following information:<br />

your background, short- and long-term goals, contributions<br />

you would like to make to your field <strong>of</strong> study, and strengths<br />

you bring to the program<br />

• Submit contact information (email addresses and phone<br />

numbers) for two pr<strong>of</strong>essional references<br />

• Demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in ESOL via completion <strong>of</strong> an ESOL<br />

survey course or district in-service points<br />

• Demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>of</strong> the Additional Elements <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Florida</strong> Uniform Core Curriculum (UCC)<br />

To be fully admitted to the program, the following requirements<br />

must be met in addition to the requirements for provisional<br />

admission (above). Full admission is required by the fifth<br />

week <strong>of</strong> the first semester. Students will be unable to register<br />

for a second semester <strong>of</strong> coursework until full admission has<br />

been granted.
