stranded in a deserted
unlit car park.
W hen he eventually
arrived nearly an hour
late at the car park in
Bury, Lancashire, Miss
Leslie Chamberlain, 24,
was alm ost in tears with
worry.
Miss Chamberlain said
yesterday: ”1 think that
to give someone a speeding
fine when they are
doing nothing m ore than
helping a frightened lady
in trouble is terrible.”

Life for the Devil who
murdered a little

SEX killer Trevor Owen
— branded a devil by
detectives — was jailed
for life yesterday for the
murder of angelic Tiffany
Hoiles.
Owen, 31, also dubbed
Quasimodo because of his
staring eyes and the way he
limps, lured nine-year-old
Tiffany from an adventure
playground into woods.

It was a repeat of a sex attack
he com m itted 16 years ago in the
sam e place, a t the sam e tim e of
day, with a girl of the sam e age.
Trapped

. youngster and threatened her
before assaulting her: “If you
scream I’ll kill you.” She su rvived.
— but 16 years later, Tiffany
died a brutal death.
At Winchester Crown Court, Mr
Justice MacPherson told Owen:
“You have been convicted on the
clearest evidence of a brutal murder.
You are a very dangerous
man.”
Owen was taken to the cells
screaming at police: “In God’s

name I’m innocent. You’ve pinned
it on me.”
Detectives were alerted that
Owen had been hanging around
children in the Milldown play area
while they were on holiday. Forensic
experts matched up fibres from
Tiffany’s clothing to his.
They also proved that his clothing,
like hers, was covered in ivy
hair from plants at the scene of the
murder:
After the case Detective Superintendent
Roger Thompson said:
“I’m satisfied and pleased that the
right man has been sentenced to
life today.
“He has shown no remorse for
Tiffany’s fate and in court the only

sorrow he has shown has been for
himself.
“At Tiffany’s funeral they sang
her favourite songs and one of
those was Lord of the Dance.
“There’s a line in that ‘I danced
with the devil on my back’ — that
sums it all up for me.”
In 1986, Owen was again convicted
of an assault on a girl, but
the ruling was quashed on appeal
because his victim was too upset to
give evidence.
Mr Thompson added: “I find it
deeply disturbing that he has comm
itted this m urder in circum ­
stances so similar to his last conviction
or attack on a girl in 1972 — the
same place, the same time of day
and a girl of the same age.
“It obviously poses the question
about the safety of young girls if he
were ever released.”
Search
Tiffany’s father, Mike Hoile, said:
“I’m relieved it’s all over and I’d
like to thank the police, the public
and the Army who helped in the
search at the time.”
Tiffany’s natural mother, Yas-
min, died in a car crash five years
ago and her step-mother Michaela
grew very close to the girl.
Two days before the murder she
was told she was pregnant, only to
be shattered by Tiffany’s death.
Now they have a baby Luke who
is nearly a month old.
Family friends said: “The lad is a
real corker."
