Prices at pumps
jump up again
TWO petrol giants increased prices again
last night, with BP adding 7.7p to the cost
of a gallon, and Esso adding 8.2p.
Esso are now charging 196p for a gallon
of four-star and 186.4p for a gallon of
unleaded. If BP’s wholesale price is
reflected at the pumps, motorists will be
paying similar prices.
It now seems likely that petrol will break
through the £2 a gallon barrier this year.
Spokesmen for the two companies blamed
the international cost of petrol and crude
oil.
News of the increase led to anger at
Westminster, with calls for Mrs Thatcher to
limit the number of petrol outlets oil companies
were allowed to own.
Other petrol companies haven’t yet
announced an increase.
STAFF at a top store are to strike over a
wage rise — even though their union
admits they are already well paid.
A thousand workers at Selfridges in
London are furious ,at an imposed settlement
of 6.25 per cent. Their union,
USDAW, says the increase is inadequate, •
and should at least match inflation, which
is now above 7.5 per cent.
Bosses at the Oxford Street store insist
it will be business as usual despite the.
one-day walk-out on April 27. They are,
refusing to discuss the imposed rise with
staff any further. i
But a union spokesman, who agreed
Selfridges staff were on good money for
the retail industry, said the strike would hit
the store hard.
Last month, USDAW held two one-day
stoppages at the store and had pickets on
all 14 entrances.
