Now <strong>the</strong> developers are having a try, reckoning th at <strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> big charter jets to A lm eria a irp o rt and a steady im provem ent of facilitie s w ill te m p t b u y e rs deterred by <strong>the</strong> bustle and <strong>the</strong> prices of <strong>the</strong> Costa del Sol. M ojacar, an old Moorishstyle town b uilt on <strong>the</strong> side of a m ountain w ith its maze of alleyway shops, restaurants and bars looking down on seafront developments, was <strong>the</strong> first focus of developm ent; two bedroom ed apartm ents at nearby G arrucha by B ritish -b o rn , b u t locallybased builder M ichael Gem, have been selling fast around <strong>the</strong> £30,000 m ark. “The developm ent has two bowling greens, a large swimm ing pool, tennis and squash courts, all free for residents,” says ex-subm arine officer Gem, “and <strong>the</strong> beach is all of 50 yards away.” Development Now M ichael Hess, of London-based Cheltenham Associates, has tied up a deal w ith th e H oteles P laya G roup, w hich has 11 hotels in <strong>the</strong> A lm eria region, to handle sales and also take a direct sh a re in d evelopm ent in schem es from Almeria to San Jose on ei<strong>the</strong>r side of th e ' Cabo de G ata headland. Prices have now zoomed beyond £100,000 for four bedroom ed apartm ents. Besides <strong>the</strong> m arina, tennis courts are nearby and Susie Ogilvy says th a t golf at £15 a round is p articularly attractive because <strong>the</strong> course does not have <strong>the</strong> queues of <strong>the</strong> Costa del Sol. B ut as M ichael H ess points out: “T his is a tranquil hideaway w here you can encounte r <strong>the</strong> ‘real Spain’ and w here life continues to exist at a sn a il’s pace.
