Wynford community newsletter
A Message from
Superintendent Steve Mohr
The 2012-13 school year has gotten off to a great start. Like most school districts in
Ohio, our instructional strategies for a particular year are often influenced by the results
of the District Report Card that is issued by the Ohio Department of Education. For the
eighth consecutive year the Wynford Schools received an Effective rating and while the
number of indicators that we reached dropped from twenty four in 2011 to twenty two in
2012, there are a number of positive results from the 2012 report card that we are proud
of. For the first time ever we met every indicator in the junior high and high school tests.
We had the highest percentage of students reach the Advanced and Accelerated status
than ever before, and our ACT scores were once again well above the state average and
the highest in Crawford County.
Six years ago our district adopted the principles of a professional learning community to
guide our instructional strategies. Professional learning communities ask four basic
questions:
1. What do we want our students to learn?
2. How will we know when each student has learned?
3. What will we do if our students don’t learn what we want them to learn?
4. What will we do when our students have learned what we want them to learn?
My belief is that we can emphatically say that we know what we want our students to
learn. Our curriculum is aligned with state standards and is reflective of what our community
desires. I believe we practice sound assessment strategies in determining whether
our students have learned what we want them to learn. Where I believe we now need to
focus our instructional energies is on answering the final two questions. Therefore, our
instructional emphasis this year will be in implementing a more thorough systematic process
of intervention and remediation for those students who have such a need, and equally
important, to provide enrichment opportunities for those students who have mastered
learning outcomes and want to stretch their learning.
In July the Board of Education adopted a set of Guiding Principles for our district. This
document goes beyond a simple mission statement that most organizations have. It identifies
our purpose, vision, mission, and lists five values that we value and expect from our
staff and students. You can view this document on page 16.
I encourage your attendance at the multitude of extracurricular activities that our students
are involved in during the coming months and welcome your input and comments on our
efforts in educating the children of our district.
Yours in education, Steve Mohr
HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Mr. Jeff Holbrook, Principal
As the 2012/2013 school year progresses we have been making subtle changes that may affect some parents.
The north brown doors between the two modular buildings were previously unlocked throughout the day for
grades 7-9 drop off and pick up. I have decided to lock the doors and ask that all parents pick up or drop off
their child through the high school office. I am now working out of two different offices and feel that it is a
safer way to enter and exit the building.
Another change that will be implemented this year is that our semester exams will be held prior to Christmas
break on December 20 and 21 with a make-up day on Monday January 7. I would caution that the dates are not
set in stone with the winter weather we may experience. Should school be cancelled, the exam dates will be
pushed back a day.
We have been offering the “Alert” system through Progress Book all year for grades 7-12. The system will indicate
whether your child has dropped below a set grade threshold. A good example would be you the parent,
sets the level at 85% for your child. Every time your child scores below that threshold you will receive an
email alerting you of the drop in grade. The other aspect to the system is to alert for missing an assignment(s).
The parent can set the threshold and an email will go to a designated email account of your choice. The directions
to set up the alert system are located in either the Jr. High office with Mrs. Taylor or in the High School
office with Mrs. Daiber.
We will be running a ONE hour early dismissal schedule on November 8 and 12 for our parent teacher conferences.
I would encourage all parents to call and schedule a time to come into the school to get know the teacher,
ask questions about grades, or assignments, and hear how your child is doing from a teacher standpoint.
The fall play, “Arsenic and Old Lace” is being directed by Renee Caserta. The performances will be held in
the High School auditorium on Friday, November 16 at 8 pm, Saturday November 17 at 8 pm, and ending with
a matinee performance on Sunday, November 18 at 2 pm. Please come out and support the kids and staff that
are working extremely hard to put together a great production!
Finally, I use and update the High School/Jr. High web page frequently to post pertinent information of upcoming
events, rules, or information. I would suggest continuing to check the webpage for updates throughout
the year.
Royal Woods Update Mr. Mark Murphy
The Royal Woods continues to evolve and provides many educational experiences for Wynford students of all ages to learn about
nature. Soon we will be adding a wetlands area at the edge of the woods. This area will be a great asset for our science classes.
While Crawford County Soil and Water Conservation staff was on site planning for the wetlands, several ash trees were noted that
have been ravaged by the Emerald Ash Borer. These trees will not survive. For the safety of all, we have decided to have these trees
removed. The removal will begin soon and will be done in a manner that will do very little damage to the existing trails and learning
areas already established. Once cut, the logs will be removed by horses. No large equipment will be used in the woods. Our students
will be able to observe – from a safe distance – and learn about the logging process.
Please be assured the only trees that will be cut are the diseased ash trees. No other trees will be disturbed. A forester from the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources visited The Royal Woods recently and stated we have a good undergrowth of maples, oaks, beech
and paw-paws that will readily grow where the ash trees are removed. We have a viable, healthy woods that will educate our students
for years to come.
Happy Fall!
I hope everyone had a successful and smooth first quarter! Please see below for the updates for each class:
7 th grade class: We are now meeting weekly for our bullying groups. All 7 th grade students will receive these classroom
guidance lessons. We will continue to meet once a week for five weeks. During that time we will discuss how
bullying has affected the JH climate, what we can do about it, and how to react if you are a victim or by-stander. Starting
November 14 th I will also begin my “G.I.R.L.S” small group (girls in real life situations). The following small
groups will be offered to 7 th and 8 th grade students throughout this year:
Healthy Choices
Anger Management
Time Management
Stress Management
*Group topics were selected based off of a Needs Assessment fill out by all students at the beginning of the year*
8 th grade class: We will be traveling as a class to Pioneer on November 9 th . This is a great time to “test drive” some of
the programs and ask questions to experienced students. We will be leaving at 7:40 and return by 11:15. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me at the number below. It is also almost time for our 8 th grade scheduling
meetings. I will send a letter home in December with time and date preferences. This is a mandatory meeting as I will
be going over High School requirements. The meetings will more than likely take place the last week of January.
9 th grade class: I will be meeting with the 9 th grade class once a month for four months as they navigate high school
life. Topics covered will include goal setting, character development, and college and career. We will also meet once to
look at their current GPA, ranking, and teach them how to calculate their GPA.
9 th grade Spanish I students- We are now holding a student led Spanish study group Wednesdays from 2:24-3:00 in the
Media Center. If you would like to join to tutor or be tutored please let me know.
Enjoy the fall season!
On August 6 th, 7 th , and 8 th the Wynford FFA went on their annual officer retreat. This
year they stayed in a lodge at Hocking Hills. Some activities they did included going to
Magic Mountain and Old Man’s Cave. The purpose of officer retreat is to plan the
events for the upcoming school year. They also appointed committees, established officer
responsibilities, and set officer goals. The goals that the Wynford FFA officers
have established for the year are: to fix the sign by the royal woods, to re-establish the
BBQ signs, to host a leadership night, to adopt a highway, and to rebuild the FFA storage
shed. The next FFA event is the annual Wynford FFA/ Band BBQ. The BBQ is Saturday,
September 29 th .
On September 13th, some Wynford FFA members went to the
forestry contest at Camp Michael. Criteria for the contest: tree
identification; a chainsaw safety test; measurement of a tree to
determine how much wood you would get from it; and a written
test over the gernal forestry. Out of the Wynford FFA Chapter,
Aryn Copeland placed first, Madelyn Assenheimer placed second,
The Wynford Athlec Boosters are in the midst of a
very busy food concessions operaon at the football
field. We open for business at every varsity, JV,
freshmen, 8 th grade and 7 th grade home football game. These require a
lot of volunteer help and as usual, our volunteers have stepped up to
make every game a success. At this me, the Athlec Booster officers
want to thank some very special people for their outstanding efforts &
management skills: Rose Hoffman & Vanessa Shutler organized and
scheduled all the volunteers for the Jr Hi & Freshmen games; Shelly
Messmer organized and did prep work for the stand volunteers; and
the Friday night squad: Kathy Sco, Pennee Coffman, Rob Sles, Irene
Appleby and Shelly Messmer as key people who setup and prep our
food stand to be ready when our volunteer helpers come in to face the
huge hungry crowds that are here to cheer on the Royals & the vising
team.
I want to personally “thank” the officers, Mike Alspach, Crea Johnson
and Mis Alspach who have managed the hecc tasks of ordering
products, opmizing skills & organizing schedules. The Boosters’ apparel
& accessories stand is overseen this year by Dawn Cramer. A Special
thank you goes out to all the head coaches who secure our volunteer
helpers and the student athletes who sell the 50/50 raffle ckets.
This years’ Reverse Raffle will not be held, but we do plan to bring it
back on the following year. With the “U Drive A Ford Program”, we offset
the fundraising of the Reverse Raffle. Thank you to all who took the
me to come out and drive a new Ford and support the Athlec Boosters.
The fall athlec season has come to an end for our golfers and cross
country teams. Congratulaons to the athletes and coaches for such a
successful year! Our volleyball teams at all levels had a great year also.
Good luck to the varsity girls on their tournament trail. Football is
winding down, but what a successful year. Good luck to the Royals!
(NCC championships and tournament standings could not be determined
at the me of this publicaon).
The Wynford Athlec Boosters will be working with Bob Evans Restaurant
15% of your Bob Evans bill will be given back to the athlec boosters.
Since we all like to eat out for breakfast, lunch & dinner, even carryouts,
Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing
your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can
be used to treat and prevent the flu.
1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others
to protect them from getting sick too.
2. Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will
help prevent others from catching your illness.
3. Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent
those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use
an alcohol-based hand rub.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated
with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Do not use a cloth handkerchief; it just stores the
germs in your pocket!
6. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids,
and eat nutritious food.
Note: the Crawford County Health Department has moved from its Walnut Street address. They are now at 1520 Isaac Beal Rd. Call
(419) 562-5871 for flu shot clinic times.
Remember if your child needs to take a prescription medicine during the day, the school needs to have a consent form signed by the parent
and the prescriber. If you have a doctor’s appointment scheduled, save yourself time and take the form with you. It is on the Wynford web
site under the “Forms” tab.
I have been very fortunate to be able to take advantage of a program that provides free stock Epinephrine auto injector pens (Epi-
Pen) for our school. They are used in emergency life-threatening allergic attacks such as those brought on by undiagnosed bee stings, food,
drug, or Latex allergies. The auto-injectors are for emergencies and cannot replace ones for students that already have them at school.
Lastly, I wanted to thank the Eco-Trend Thrift Store for their ongoing donations of gently used clothing that I use in case a student
needs a change at school. They have been providing clothes to Wynford for several years. Their store is located in the Whetsone Plaza,
Bucyrus, and they are open from noon to 7 PM. They also have holiday decorations, books, and games. Stop by and say thank you if your
child has ever come home with clean, dry clothes after a bad day at school!
Thank you to all who participate and make this a worthwhile activity for our students, staff, and community
while allowing Wynford to be a leader in being environmentally “Smart”.
Animal feed and bird seed bags made of the heavy woven plastic material will be collected for the 6th grade Mohican
School in the Out-of-Doors fund. These bags will be sewn into tote bags and offered for purchase at a later date. Please
make sure these bags are clean and if possible neatly cut off the bottom of the bag.
SPECIAL NOTES
◊ Thank you to graduates of 2012 that helped with the recycling events or trash clean up after our home football games
during their high school tenure. A special of recognition to Ben Stuckey, Kinsey Richmond, Daniel Blank & John
Miller, faithful volunteers in our recycle collections.
◊ This year’s additions to our recycling collection on the school properties include more attractive and functionality of
containers within our lunchrooms and the covers for barrels around the track. These containers and covers are provided
by the Wyandot County Recycling Center and Solid Waste Management District.
◊ Also the district will be a party of the pilot project in collecting deodorant containers (stick, roll on, or gel but NO
aerosol cans) through Funding Factory benefiting the high school science club. At this time the collection process
has not began; we are awaiting information from Funding Factory regarding details of collection.
ACADEMIC BOOSTERS Dana Rausch
Welcome back to another great year!
As the students and staff of the Wynford School District embark on another active school year, the
Wynford Academic Boosters also begin another year of supporting the students of the district. The Academic
Booster’s purpose is to recognize and encourage academic achievements, as well as strengthen the
communication between school, home and community.
Our organization’s mission and purpose have expanded over the last few years; however, our main focus is to recognize
and reward academic success at every level of education in the Wynford Schools.
The Academic Boosters willingly accept any help or participation individuals or businesses choose to provide. The brochure
in this newsletter and on the Wynford website not only highlights our support of many academic programs, but
also includes this year’s membership drive. Please consider helping us promote the success of our students!
Prohibition Against Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying
With the much publicized national news reports of serious incidents of bullying that took place last spring, it is
important to know that harassment, intimidation, or bullying behavior by any student/school personnel in the
Wynford Local School district is strictly prohibited.
According to House Bill 276 “Harassment, intimidation, or bullying means any intentional written, verbal,
graphic or physical act, including electronically transmitted acts ( i.e. Internet, cell phone,
personal digital assistant (PDA) or wireless hand-held devices), either overt or covert, by a student or group of
students towards other students with the intent to harass, intimidate, injure, threaten, ridicule or humiliate.”
Such behavior is prohibited on or immediately adjacent to school grounds, at any school sponsored activity, on
school provided transportation, or at any official school bus stop.
Such conduct may result in disciplinary action including suspension and/or expulsion from school.
Dear Wynford Community:
The Wynford Education Foundation (WEF) in partnership with the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation is extending this
unique offer to all Wynford alumni, parents, grandparents, current students, athletes, teachers, residents, and administration
to help “Build the Future for Generations to Come”.
On Thursday, December 6 th , 2012, The Bucyrus Area Community Foundation will match $1.00 of every dollar raised up to
a maximum of $20,000.00 via their 2012 “Match Day” program. “Match Day” is open to five surrounding area school
districts. If the total amount raised among all schools exceeds $20,000, the BACF match will be divided proportionally
among the school districts based on each school’s total monies raised.
We respectfully ask that you consider making a contribution to the Wynford Education Foundation’s permanent endowment
fund. Your contribution will provide grant opportunities for the WEF forever. A contribution to the WEF endowment
fund is never spent. Instead, it is invested, and each year a portion of the earnings is made available for grant allocations.
To date the Wynford Education Foundation has granted over $72,000.00 for various educational projects and programs.
These funds are not intended to substitute for the normal, tax-based operating funds, but rather enhance student life and
make our Wynford Community better.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Scott Langenderfer, at 419-569-2238 or email him at scottlangenderfer@yahoo.com.
Please detach and send with contribution.
Contributions can be mailed to the address listed below or dropped off at either the Wynford Elementary office or
