Anthony (Tony) Baylis
Candidate for Treasurer
I want to thank the nominating committee for selecting me to run as Treasurer for the
ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee (EC). I appreciate the opportunity to serve the
organization.
I served on the EC as Treasurer from 2003–2006, as a Director-at-Large from 2008–
2009, and I am currently serving as Treasurer. Thus, I have experience and a good
understanding of the role and responsibilities. I have over a 20-year history of
participating in non-profit organizations and in managerial positions that include financial
responsibility in the computing community.
As Treasurer, I will work with program chairs and committee members to oversee the
organization’s finances. We will work together to prepare annual budgets that benefit
the SIGGRAPH community. One of my key priorities as Treasurer will be to work with
the EC and ACM to develop a financial strategy to effectively and efficiently grow the
organization’s reserve fund and build flexibility for growth in our programs areas.
If elected, I will dedicate my abilities and experience to sustain the excellent work that
ACM SIGGRAPH is known for in the international community. I will work with my fellow
committee members to maintain the financial stability and vitality of the organization.
Brad A. Lawrence
Candidate for Treasurer
If elected to the ACM SIGGRAPH Treasurer position I would first and for most keep
extremely detailed records of our organization’s financial activities. My position at the
Kennedy Space Center has provided me with the opportunity to manage many multimillion
dollar projects in the world of science and imagery. I have always completed my
projects within the directed budget requirements and provided complete and accurate
reports for reviews. From a strategic standpoint I would like to help the organization
continually transform with technology and find ways to offer additional benefits to our
member base. Some of those methods would be focused on finding economical ways
to bring the annual conferences closer to our members throughout the year. By utilizing
the existing talent pool from our membership we could tie these groups together across
the world to share ideas, experiences and solutions. This would not only bring our
membership closer together but provide an inspiration for industry and academia to
support our ongoing efforts. It would be an honor for me to help ACM SIGGRAPH
evolve in the direction that is most pleasing to its members and industrial partners.
BIOGRAPHY
Brad was born on a rare warm day in Bangor, Maine. Desiring to perfect his musical
talents he was inspired to attend the Boston Conservatory of Music. Shortly before
graduation he was motivated by an audio recording documentary and decided that the
world of electronics was a more intriguing path. Brad enlisted in the Navy and became a
Cryptological Maintenance Technician. This was where he discovered his interest in
troubleshooting computer systems and developing more efficient technologies. After his
discharge he joined ITT in Dallas as a Field Systems Engineer. His responsibilities
included maintaining computer systems for the City of Dallas and various major
corporations. A few years later he was offered a job with Texas Instruments building
and calibrating FLIR systems. This introduced him to the world of advanced imaging, as
well as research and development. In 1985 he accepted a job as a Video Systems
Specialist on the Space Shuttle Program with Lockheed Space Operations Company.
Holding the title of Computer Science Lead, he now oversees the NASA Image Analysis
Facility, Kennedy's Advanced Visualization Environments Lab and a Motion Capture
Brad continues to play drums in various local bands and enjoys maintaining and riding
his Indian motorcycle. He looks forward to future challenges that will provide a wealth of
new friends and experiences.
Matt Adcock
Candidate for Director at Large
My first experience with ACM SIGGRAPH, twelve years ago, was as a student
volunteer on a SIGGRAPH Pioneers’ scholarship. I was drawn to the strong tradition of
technical and artistic achievements and excited by the excellence on display. Since then
I have contributed to many facets of the organisation, including the establishment and
success of SIGGRAPH Asia and its precursor, GRAPHITE.
As the computer graphics community continues to broaden, both geographically and
technically, our organisation must grow and adapt or risk shedding its relevance. We
must continue to build the exceptional quality of the annual conferences, while
maintaining financial vigilance and transparency. We can better educate new arrivals
about the benefits of SIGGRAPH membership. We must implement low-risk ways to
embrace emerging sub-fields (we should respond when a new Course or BOF is
overflowing).
As a director of the executive committee I will support and enact strategies that: make
greater use of siggraph.org to showcase unique Chapter events (learning from TEDx);
address the fragmentation between Small Conferences, External Liaison, International
Resources, Chapters, and Communications; re-energise our tradition of celebrating
Interactive Techniques; and help members achieve wider exposure for their work,
including through social media and by association with the SIGGRAPH brand.
BIOGRAPHY
Masa Inakage
Candidate for Director at Large
In the highly inter-connected world with fast changing economy and social value, ACM
SIGGRAPH must continuously adapt and create new values for the organization to
sustain its leadership to serve the international community in computer graphics and
interactive techniques. The challenge is to build a strategy and execution plan through
multiple perspectives beyond what ACM SIGGRAPH does today.
I have extensive experience with the SIGGRAPH community both as a contributor in
various programs and in the capacity of a volunteer as a member of the Executive
Committee and Conference Chair for SIGGRAPH ASIA 2009. I also have experience in
building strategies for academic and research institutions as well as international
organizations such as World Economic Forum.
As Director-at-Large, I will leverage my strategist experience to strategize how ACM
SIGGRAPH can strengthen its core value of excellence and diversity. My primary
interest of contribution is to strategize international community building through the use
of social media and remote conference participation. I also plan to expand the scope of
ACM SIGGRAPH by identifying areas in which SIGGRAPH expertise could contribute to
solve global issues. It is important for ACM SIGGRAPH to be positioned as an
international community leader to act for a better future.
ACM SIGGRAPH is currently in good shape with a strong governing body and a
devoted and hard working group of volunteers. Given this base, we can now afford to
reach out into new areas of benefit to our members. I would like to see ACM
SIGGRAPH play more of a role in advocacy for the graphics community. I expect that
that could take many forms: copyright and IP protection practices, visas and immigration
policies and research funding from the government and industry.
As a concrete example, the field of robotics has recently scored a major funding
initiative from a set of government funding agencies (announced by President Obama
himself). This initiative was the direct consequence of a report written by researchers
and efforts of the CCC to get it in front of the right people in government. Research
funding in graphics (in the US) has long lagged other areas with the standard argument
being that "industry will do it anyway." I'd like to see SIGGRAPH change that by
providing our collective insight into the future of graphics and by influencing the funding
agencies to better support collaborations with industry. We should also encourage
industry to engage more directly with academic researchers.
Thomas J. Appolloni
Candidate for Director at Large
I have been professionally associated with CG for over twenty-five years and involved
with SIGGRAPH for almost twenty. It is such an amazingly diverse group of individuals
passionate about computer graphics and its interactions. Each paper read and
presentation attended continue to be inspirations. However, beyond the support of
technical developments, the heart of SIGGRAPH’s sustainable core is the connections
formed between those with this passion.
With all the sponsored events and work to create them, SIGGRAPH’s greatest
achievement continues to be the community it has formed and every effort must be
made to nurture it. As Director, it will be my mission and honor to press for strong
initiatives providing the environment to expand our interlaced communities of educators,
developers, practitioners and researchers with a focus on education. From initial
graduates just becoming involved to those of us that have “been around for a while”,
SIGGRAPH must be at the forefront of initiatives that provide members the tools and
information to achieve new and amazing things that inspire and energize.
Having been a CG educator, lab researcher, and industry practitioner, along with
previous involvements, I have a broad experience base and as Director, can assist with
moving SIGGRAPH forward.
