Update on the OEM division
By Jens Peder Pedersen,
President OEM Division,
Satair A/S
In the last edition of Satair News we
talked about the changes within the
OEM division, and the areas of focus
for the business in terms of Distribution,
Manufacturing and Services.
We also explained the determination
to build on the high level of
customer focus and service, aiming
to increase these with the new business
models.
The OEM division has consistently
experienced very strong double-digit
organic growth over the
last three years, and now represents
approximately one third of Satair’s
total turnover. Strong customer and
supplier relations, focus on further
development of in-house service-
provider know-how and global expansion
are fundamentals behind
the positive development of the
division – and we will continue this
work by focusing on the following
development plans:
AgustaWestland Italy
have signed a major
contract with Satair
By Daniel Poiret, VP Sales
and Supplier Management
& Managing Director, Satair
Hardware SAS
AgustaWestland Italy has signed
a major contract with Satair for
the supply of Titanium Blind Bolts.
These blind fasteners are used to assemble
composite structures.
The following benefits make this
‘pull type’ blind bolt suitable for
composite application:
Satair and Sonaca agree four-year deal procurement of Maxi Bolt Plus
A procurement agreement for the next four years has been set up between Satair and Sonaca, Belgium.
The agreement refers to the procurement of a large range of a new class of EN bolts. The upgraded version
of the classical pull type of MS 21140/21141 – known as Maxi Bolt Plus – has the same features but
benefits from a larger footprint and grip range. (Maxi Bolt Plus is a trademark of Cherry Fasteners)
■ The large ‘footprint’
makes it suitable for blind
side application without
damaging the material
■ As the fastener is made
from Titanium Alloy it does
not suffer from galvanic
corrosion
■ There is no shank expansion
from the sleeve, hence no
delamination inside the
structure
■ It provides an average
guaranteed preload of 20%
This product is used on the
NH90 helicoptor and other composite
applications on a range of various
Helicoptors.
■ Improvement
of the product range
■ Strengthen technical and
supply chain services
■ Create one global
organization
Introducing new Supply
Chain Directors in France
and the uK
By Nigel Thomas, Managing Director, Satair Hardware uK and
Daniel Poiret, VP Sales and Supplier Management & Managing
Director, Satair Hardware SAS
Profile of john McLaughlin
John McLaughlin, Supply Chain Director
UK, OEM has worked in supply
chain for 21 years, including
nine years with Satair’s customer,
BAe Systems. John has also worked
within the automotive and medical
industry and has been involved in
most aspects of supply chain along
the way.
John has gained significant international
experience in the last ten
years including Eastern Europe and
South East Asia. His feet are a little
more grounded for the Satair role
(more time in a car than a plane).
Following his induction programme
John is really looking forward to
contributing to the success of
Satair’s future.
‘Supply chain is all about the
seamless flow of products and information,’
says John. “We need
to understand customer needs and
transform these into high levels of
customer satisfaction which also
deliver growth and profitability for
Satair.’
For future opportunities, John
explains his view for moving
forward:
‘One of the challenges in the
future is that we are now part of a
global organization where there will
As part of our development
plans, we have introduced two key
strategic positions within supply
chain operations. John McLaughlin
joins us in the UK and Antoine
Chetelat in France, as Supply Chain
Directors. We anticipate that John
and Antoine will contribute to solidify
and develop our operations in
the UK and France, building on their
past experience from Aircelle and
BAE Systems respectively
Driven by the Satair ’Delivering
500+’ strategy – The business will
progress by the four main strategic
areas:
■
■
■
■
Growth and profitability
Relationships
Innovation
People
be significant benefits from working
together – we need to identify these
opportunities and take full advantage
of them.’
Working his way through every
area of the business John is getting
to understand the processes,
systems and people. ‘Talented and
motivated people are the key success
factor for any organization,’ he
says, ‘everyone has an important
role to play in regard to delighting
our customers and contributing to
profitability.’
Profile of Antoine Chetelat
Antoine Chetelat, Supply Chain Director
(France) joins Satair from his
previous role as Supply Chain Manager
for Aircelle. Within the supply
chain function, Antoine has over ten
years experience in a variety of industries
and has been involved with
many functions within supply chain
including; scheduling, planning and
customer service.
Antoine brings considerable
change management skills with him;
he describes examples within the
aeronautics industry where he has
introduced continuous improvement
initiatives aimed at reducing
lead-times, generating productivity
schedules, reducing exposure to
These objectives will be the underlying
drivers behind our ambition
to develop Satair into a global
leader in distribution and service
provision for fasteners, hardware
and ‘C-class’ parts for both the
OEM and Aftermarket. Even though
the aerospace hardware distribution
market is highly concentrated today
with a handful of large global players
– Satair being one of these – we
feel there are many opportunities to
improve the value proposition towards
the customers.
One of the tangible ways we
will enhance our customer service
in the short-term is through the implementation
of Satair’s new SAP
platform during the first quarter
of 2008. Here, for the first time,
Satair’s OEM division will operate
on a single ERP system globally –
and allow customers to enquire in
real-time about pricing, availability
and place orders using our web portal
currency constraints across national
boundaries and general cost reduction
activities – all to the benefit of
the customer.
When asking Antoine about
his new role at Satair he says; ‘the
challenge for the coming years is
to meet OEM customer needs in a
more and more demanding market
and to support them through
the radical changes they are making
in order to ensure they (and we)
remain competitive. By taking full
advantage of the many opportunities
presented, Satair will not only
maintain, but grow and increase its
market share.’
Antoine believes the key words
for moving forward within the business
are ‘professionalism and motivation,’
he goes on explaining, ‘we
have to keep focusing on these two
aspects of management, especially
as our role in the supply chain is to
act as an interface between manufacturers
and customers – as a consequence
– Satair people are the
most valuable asset we have.’
OEM presence in the Russian Federation
By Victoria Martin, Marketing
Assistant, Satair uK
The OEM Division has several programs
in place in Russia – and is fast
approaching No. 1 supplier status
on several. Ton Eichelsheim, International
Sales Director and his Inside
Sales colleague, Henrik Bjørnø have
made significant headway into the
Russian aerospace industry.
Engineering Employer of
the year 2007 award
By Simon Varney, Deputy
Manufacturing Manager, Satair
Hardware uK
Satair Hardware UK Ltd. has recently
been awarded the title of
‘Engineering Employer of the Year
2007’ by Prospects Training College,
near the manufacturing facility in
Southend, Essex.
Satair employs three apprentices
who are at various stages of their
course. Frankie Randall was the first
student to graduate earlier this year.
At a recent awards ceremony Satair
Hardware was presented with the
award – the college commented
that Satair works very closely on the
relationship between the students
and the college and ‘always goes
the extra mile!’
by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company.
For this aircraft, Satair has
designed struts and latches through
Avibank (part of the PCC group of
companies).
The Sukhoi Superjet 100 family
is just that. A family; 75 and 95 seat
aircraft with an unequalled 95%
commonality of airframe, power
plant, wing, flight deck and main
systems. This unique commonality
of Superjet 100 airplanes makes
flight scheduling and crew planning
much more cost-effective. Airlines
can select right capacity aircraft
when operating Superjet 100 family
airplanes as a single fleet.
The second link with Russia is
Satair’s involvement with the IRKUT
Corporation. Being the world-recognised
leader of the Russian aerospace
industry, the IRKUT Corporation
has a diversified products
portfolio and is able to conceive, design,
build, deploy and support top-
they are also involved in Airbus
sub-contracting and recently Satair
booked its first large order of EUR
3.5 mil. for fastener supply.
‘All of this business could not
have been achieved without our
good agent Igor and our inside sales
support, Henrik Bjørnø.’ Ton says
proudly.
