Tewa, '(7W?(5, ' spread wide,' applied to tendrils of vines, squashes,<br />

etc. , and apparently to trees of spreading foliage. Thus: ^ aw6<br />

tsqywse, 'spread-wide greenness,' a female personal name given<br />

by the White Fir clan at Hano.<br />

Pi, 'to come up,' 'to grow up.' Thus: napi, 'it comes up' (wg, it;<br />

p^, to come up). This is said of a plant sprouting and growing<br />

up out of the ground.<br />

Pa, 'to burst,' 'to crack.' This is said of a plant unfolding or open-<br />

ing. Thus: sandpapo^", 'the tobacco bursts open or unfolds'<br />

{sa, tobacco; nq, it; pa, to burst; po^°, to become).<br />

Of leaves (or flowers) opening and spreading wide the Tewa say<br />

^ibikawaM, dibij)dblwaM ' the 3+ leaves open themselves,' ' the 3+ flow-<br />

ers open themselves' {diii, prefixed reflexive pronoun third person<br />

3+ plural; lia, leaf; poVi, flower; wcui, to spread open). Thus, in a<br />

war-song sung at Hano: "'iweday ''alijowa tseynse pegqn diiiJcalawadi^<br />

' thence the sunflowers, bursting open on every side, spread wide<br />

their leaves' Ciweu^qy, Hano dialectic emphatic form of Hwedi, thence;<br />

''aiijowa, Hano name for 'sunflower' ? species; tsems^, in all directions;<br />

pegqy, bursting; dibi, prefixed reflexive pronoun third person 3-i- plural;<br />

Icala, Hano dialectic form of lea, leaf; wa^ii, to spread open). The same<br />
