Light, Darkness, Color, Fainting, Lines, Spots<br />

Ki^ 'to be light.' Thus: nq^hlnq,^ 'it is light' {n4, it; hi, to be light;<br />

TiQ, present). This verb seems to refer only to daylight.<br />

T'e (Hano Tewa, fele), 'to shine.' Thus: n(lfe7ui, 'it shines' {nd, it;<br />

fe, to shine; na, present). This verb is used of the sun: n(lfant'e,<br />

'the sun shines' {nd, he; fay, sun; fe, to shine).<br />

Ko, 'a light.' This noun is used of the light of a candle, lamp, lantern,<br />

fire, firefly, glowworm, etc. Of the light shining one may<br />

say: rnj^o/^'^, 'the light shines ' (?irt, it; ^"6>, alight; ^'e, to shine); or<br />

ndkcike, ' the light is bright' {nd, it; ho, a light; he, to be strong),<br />

PcCoui or parage, 'sunny place,' 'sunny side of a pueblo' {j)d)a,% akin<br />

to Jemez pe, 'sun'; d\, g^, locative).<br />

ICy,7j, 'to be dark.' Thus: nq,h'y,nnQ, 'it is dark' {nd, it; h^'iiy, to be<br />

dark; nq,, present). ICiiy is used as an adjective in the form<br />

h'y,ywl {h'li, to be dark). Thus: jpoh^^ywT^i''^, 'dark hole' Q^'o,<br />

hole; Fiiyiot, dark).<br />

"'Oh's^y, 'shade,' 'shadow.'<br />

Kse,nnuge or hse.niyqe, 'shady place,' 'shady side of a pueblo' {]i,s£,r),<br />

ci. ^oFs^y, above; 7inge, ''iyge, at the side).<br />

^ Ofsa, 'glittering.' Thus: leu ^otsaH^^, 'glittering stone' {Jku, stone;<br />

^otsa, glittering).<br />

^Otsapi, 'dull,' 'glossy' {^oisa, glittering; ^^, negative). The usage<br />

of this term with the meaning 'glossy' is curious. Thus: ''a<br />

^ofsapi^iy, 'glossy cloth' ('«, cloth; ^ofsa, glossy).<br />

There is no word meaning 'color.' One asks: hawVdy ^iibi hataju<br />

''y,mmy,, 'howls your horse?', meaning 'what color is your horse?'<br />

{JiawVqy, how; ^yhi, of you 1; haiaju, horse; "'uy, it with reference<br />

to you 1; 7)111, to be). If this is not definite enough one might follow<br />

the question with ha piH''^ ha tss^H'^, 'is it red or is it white?' {ha, or;<br />

pi, red; ha, or; tss^, white).<br />

TqJ'^y (Hano Tewa, fa), 'painted,' 'painting.' Thus: n4f^Qmm'\L,^\t\s<br />

painted' {nd, it; ;ia'-y, painted; my,, to be); toba td'sydii'\ 'painted<br />

cliff' (^6»^«, cliff; ^ct'-??5 painted).<br />

T'li, 'spotted.' The attributive form is fmol{fu, spotted). Thus:<br />
