Baden’s thermal springs
In 2013, Baden will give centre
stage to the city’s thermal waters
and their springs. Baden’s
source of warm well-being
bursts forth from some twenty
thermal springs which – as our
city mayor so aptly phrases it in
his welcome message – have been attracting visitors from
near and far for more than 2,000 years.
Temporarily without a large thermal bath, it is currently
possible to convince yourself of the beneficial effects in
the modern smaller baths of Baden’s spa district. Read
more on this subject in the “Wellness” section.
However, Baden is much more than just a health resort.
Our dynamic city on the River Limmat is also a source of
inspiration, creativity, vitality and exuberance. The welltended
parks, easily accessible local recreation areas,
virtually inexhaustible abundance of leisure options and
multi-faceted cultural scene are just a few examples.
The terms “source” and “spring” both indicate origin, in
other words, the point to which something can be traced
and from which something emanates. The source and
thus the origin of the city’s propensity for development lies
in the hearts and heads of the people of Baden. The numerous
far-sighted individuals who have shaped Baden’s
development from time immemorial are proof of this statement.
The new city tour “Baden’s Brilliant Minds” offered
by Info Baden provides an opportunity to get to know some
of them better (see the “Worth Seeing” section).

The city of Baden owes its name
to its hot thermal springs. The
Romans used the thermal springs
in their time here; the children of
Baden learn this fact at an early
stage in school. They were a place
of recuperation and healing for
the soldiers of the Vindonissa military camp, now known
as Windisch. Aquae Helveticae – this is also Baden school
knowledge – was the name of the resort on the bend in the
River Limmat 2,000 years ago.
Baden is justly proud of its long tradition as a city of thermal
baths. Although written sources regarding bathing practices
petered out after the Romans withdrew from Helvetia, we now
know that the thermal springs were never totally forgotten
over the centuries. People passed on knowledge of the
healing and beneficial effects of Baden’s thermal waters from
generation to generation – orally and then again in written
form – right up to current times.
When as now the city of Baden and the baths operators
completely refurbish the bathing facilities 2,000 years after
the Romans, this represents the continuation of a long
tradition. Baden’s baths have continually been adapted to suit
new conditions, new findings and also new fashions. The
unique nature and quality of the waters from around twenty
thermal springs have remained constant. We bear the
responsibility of continuing to ensure this.

“One Of A Million” Music Festival Baden

Exhibition “The Fifth Season”

In her works, Swiss video artist Ursula Palla addresses the
contrast between naturalness and artificiality and
constructs seemingly natural worlds using artificial means.
Her image worlds are ambiguous and often foreshadow an
underlying reverberation of concealed threat. The works
which were intended for Villa Langmatt respond to the
interiors of the villa of the Brown industrialist family and
make reference to the themes of nature and technology.

any miracles, yet new paths have opened up, the dourness
of daily routine has given way to hope for a new future.

KMU SWISS Forum / Marktplatz Baden

will be addressed for one day at the 11th KMU SWISS

Bluesfestival Baden

The Bluesfestival Baden celebrates its 10th anniversary!
No longer an insider tip, the Bluesfestival Baden is now
one of the highlights of the year. The anniversary features
unique events: Philipp Fankhauser celebrates his 25th
stage anniversary with guests at an additional evening in
the Kurtheater. The Blues Train is on the road again, and
further surprises await visitors in the form of workshops,
pub concerts and the legendary concert nights at the
Nordportal.
Baden Magic – International Festival

Star guest Michel Gammenthaler takes the lead in a
three-day show full of excellent magic art from around the
world at the Kurtheater Baden. This year’s festival includes
among others Sebastian Nicolas, Vice World Champion of
Magic Art, award-winning black theatre and poetic sand
painting. The festival will also feature street magic in the
city centre, a magic dinner, and much more.

Baden Open Air Cinema offers not only the spectacle of
film. The unique location and urban backdrop make the
cinema itself a pure spectacle. The seventh Baden Open
Air Cinema in succession offers a diverse programme,

be open offering great views and a small range of dishes.

Fantoche – 11th International Festival
of Film Animation

Once again, Fantoche makes this possible. Switzerland’s

brilliant diversity of trick film. Each year, visitors from
home and abroad flock to Baden to see the national and

entranced by sparkling fantasy.
Orienteering World Cup Final 2013

The Orienteering World Cup Final takes place in Baden this
weekend. The highlight will see the best forty runners in
the Orienteering World Cup 2013 Overall compete for the
middle distance title in Baden’s Old Town, starting and
finishing at Schlossbergplatz. Simone Niggli and the three
medallists from the Aargau region at the Sprint World
Championships 2012 (Matthias Kyburz, Matthias Merz,
Matthias Müller) can be viewed at close quarters.
Melnitz
19 October 2013, Premiere at the Kurtheater Baden

The 2006 novel “Melnitz” by Charles Lewinski is a highly
respected and widely read book. Lewinski tells the story of
the Meijer family, a Jewish family from Endingen whose
life changes radically after the death of their uncle Melnitz.
The novel “Melnitz” as the portrait of a small village
becomes a reflection of the big wide world. The location in
the city and region of Baden and in Switzerland gave
Walter Küng the idea of creating a stage version from this
material. And so now Melnitz, Janki Meijer, Chanele and
many other characters from the novel are set to bring the
stage of the Kurtheater Baden to life and to tell their
Jewish and self-mocking stories to the audience.
Baden’s “Liechterwecke” Christmas
illuminations ceremony
27 November 2013, 5.30 pm at Schlossbergplatz
Baden’s Christmas illuminations are visible from miles
around. At the traditional “Liechterwecke” ceremony, the
city’s unique illuminations are switched on in every street.
A great crowd of children awakens the magnificent light
art with hundreds of little bells. Bakeries hand out
Spanischbrödli (local speciality), and there’s hot mulled
wine for adults.

tradition without ignoring innovation. The tour visits the
brewhouse, the fermenting and storage cellar and the tank

All year long, tours for interested individuals (adults

every Wednesday evening or Sunday morning with

The film about Baden –
an unusual city portrait
“Verliebt in Baden” (“In love with Baden”) is an innovative
film project by, with and about the people of Baden. The
project, which was initiated in 2011, has generated a film
history of around 20 minutes duration portraying the city
of Baden. It will be released in spring 2013. The website
www.verliebtinbaden.ch shows the current status of the
project, provides supplementary information on the
participants, the making of the film, as well as offering
feedback facilities for everyone. Thanks to this multimedia
alignment, new stories and themes can be uploaded on
the website on an ongoing basis and later integrated in a
film release. As the city changes, the film will also change
over time.
As a result, conference participants, leisure guests,
employees being introduced to the location and interested
members of the population have the opportunity to form a
picture of the especially lively character of this small city
with the aid of a deliberately entertaining cinematographic
work from refreshingly subjective perspectives. The film
provides a multi-faceted insight into Baden and allows
those watching it to immerse themselves in emotional
moments from the lives of the participants.
The project is conceived and implemented by Avista AG in
Busslingen. The exacting task of producing the film was
made possible by the generous support of various
Baden-based companies. The city of Baden has assumed
the patronage of this unusual portrait.

With the audio guide “Ohren auf – Natur erzählt” (Prick up
your ears – listen to nature), the city of Baden offers an
innovative tour on the theme of “Man and the environment”.
Information in German and English on 19 locations
can be downloaded free of charge via your mobile phone.

The tour leads from Baldegg through the forest, via the
ruins at Stein into the city to Schartenfels and via the

Industriekulturpfad (Industrial Heritage
Trail) Limmat – Wasserschloss
This walking trail leads to the region’s wealth of historic
industrial buildings between Wettingen and Brugg. The
trail is well-marked and passes textile factories, power
stations, metal-working and machine shops as well as
important railway buildings. Information boards explain the
background of these structures. The trail consists of five
stages: Wettingen – Neuenhof, Baden – Ennetbaden, Baden
Nord, Turgi – Vogelsang – Untersiggenthal, Brugg – Windisch.
The starting points, which feature information boards, are
the railway stations of the corresponding towns.

Kulturweg (Culture Trail)
Baden – Wettingen – Neuenhof
The Culture Trail, also known as the “Sculpture Trail,” links
these three towns on both banks of the river Limmat as
it crosses one wooden bridge after the other. It covers a
charmingly varied river landscape in which idyllic scenery
and the marks of civilisation are to be found in close
proximity, and which is also characterised by a series of
important cultural and industrial monuments. Around 20
pieces of art by renowned Swiss artists can be discovered
along the way.
The Baden – Wettingen – Neuenhof Culture Trail is permanently
open and well-marked. There are information
boards at the railway stations and main access points.

Busy and stressed-out city dwellers are often far removed

Stadt-Naturweg (Urban Nature Trail)
Nature in the city: Follow this well-marked, circular nature
trail stretching from the “Stadtturm” (city tower) to the
Lägern hills, which showcases the region’s considerable
wealth of animals and plants. Nine interesting locations
with 15 information boards invite walkers to discover
nature in places they would not necessarily expect to find
it – namely in an urbanised area.

Our forests reflect the alteration of humanity’s need for
resources by the resulting diversity of products made from
wood. However, trees do not just play an important role

The murder of King Albrecht I led to the construction of the
Königsfelden Monastery. The king’s widow Elisabeth and

Alter Stadtfriedhof (Old City Cemetery)
Bruggerstrasse 53
Opened in 1821, its full capacity was reached in 1949.
Today, new burials are allowed in family crypts only.
Special features of the city cemetery, which now serves
as a park, include the conically-shaped cypress trees
flanking the centre aisle, picturesque old groves and
individual trees, and family crypts of affluent residents of
the city.
Kurpark
Haselstrasse 2
With the construction of the Kursaal in 1875, a park was
also created in the style of late landscape gardens. Many
elements from the richly adorned park have been lost
during later expansions and reconstructions, but the
impressive stand of trees from exotic woods of those times
and the water installations have been preserved.
Mättelipark
Spa district
Lying directly on the river Limmat, this area was a social
gathering point as far back as the Middle Ages. It was the
hotel garden of the Grand Hotel until 1944, when the hotel
was demolished. It was redeveloped as a park in 1969.
Villa Boveri Park
Ländliweg 5
The most significant private park in the city of Baden, it
was built in 1897 by Walter Boveri I. The park consists of
two independent gardens: the landscape garden and the
Neo-Baroque terraced garden.
The landscape garden is distinguished by the beautifully
preserved stand of trees that frame it and date back to its
creation. The estate is now managed by the ABB charitable
foundation.

Villa Langmatt Park
Römerstrasse 30
Construction of this park began at the same time as the
villa in 1900 at the request of industrialist Sidney Brown.
Additional expansions and redesigning took place up until
1910. The villa houses the Museum Langmatt with its
significant collection of French impressionists. The
property is now owned by the Sidney and Jenny Brown
Langmatt Foundation.

Artists Albert Siegenthaler and Gillian White created a
holistic work of art from sculptures, plants and hills in
1978. The guiding theme of the park is the “Dance of
Death” with the sundial in the centre, symbolising time.

the Water Chapel. Always open.

Badener Running and Walking Trail
The trail can be joined from the Allmend, at Baldegg or in
Dättwil / Segelhof. The signposts mark three different
routes ranging from 3.3 km (white), 8.6 km (red) and
11.2 km (black). Along the way, there are various tips on
stretching, strengthening and intensity.

Bluetrail Parcours
This completely new relaxation concept, unique throughout
the world, is based on simple exercises inspired by traditional
Chinese medicine, while focusing mainly on tai chi,
qi gong and acupressure. The exercises only take 30 to
120 seconds to perform, and do not require a great deal
of effort and / or sweating. Ideal for short breaks from the
office or school.

When you join the Running and Walking Trail from the

Vitaparcours
Whether you’re a beginner, seasoned athlete or just
wanting to get back in shape, the vita parcours in the
Chrüzliberg forest offers an excellent opportunity to
exercise according to your own personal needs and stay
fit. Stamina, agility and strength can be trained in a
balanced way on this well-marked and easy-to-follow
parcours. The junior vita parcours for three to ten-yearolds
was opened in June 2012. Five animals playfully
accompany children through 15 different stations affiliated
to the parcours for adults. The starts are located above
Liebenfels Cemetery.

and available within a small area makes Baden
a true culture capital – and it is gaining
international attention as well.

Museums
Baden Museum of History
The Baden Museum of History is dedicated to the history
of the city and region of Baden.
In the museum’s striking new building, a ramp transports
visitors back to the past and into a large riverside space, in
which important finds from Roman times, city models,
photographs and many other documents and objects
illustrate the history of Baden’s baths and industry.
Twenty-two drawer-style exhibits invite visitors to explore
the life of Baden’s men, women and children. In the
historic rooms of the Landvogteischloss (bailiff’s castle),
the displays focus on Baden during the time of the Old
Confederation as the well-established location of
significant political meetings, as well as the centre of
activity for the ruling classes and their relationships with
their subjects. Baden’s transformation into a bourgeois
society, Jewish emancipation in the 19th century and
typical lifestyles in a small city of the 1930s are also
presented. A collection of archaeological studies reveals
the history of early settlements. True-to-life special
exhibitions shed light on transformations taking place in
the environment and society, and concentrate on everyday
life and the history of the city.
The museum offers guided tours and workshops for
schools and groups (see pages 12, 13), organises family
events, and rents out its rooms for aperitifs, events and
seminars.

Museum Langmatt
The Sidney and Jenny Brown Langmatt Foundation
Built by Karl Moser, Villa Langmatt is accessible to the
public as a residential and art museum. The estate of the
Brown family – industrialists and collectors in their own
right – houses a collection of significant works by French
Impressionists (Renoir, Cézanne, Monet, etc.), a Venetian
vedute collection from the 18th century and rare ceramics.

The living areas, resplendent with French furniture, give
a wonderful impression of the lifestyle of this founding
family. The historic park is ideal for a picnic.
In keeping with the seasons and their festivities, Museum
Langmatt organises a wide array of events and tours.

(Swiss Museum of Childhood)
Imagine entering a big old house and discovering the
traces of your ancestors. Your mother’s red leather satchel
hangs in the schoolroom. You find a toy space ship that
once belonged to your father, reflecting a step into the
modern age. You spot the shiny steam engine your
grandfather played with as a child. And in your greatgrandmother’s
dollhouse, you will discover how people
used to live.
In twenty exhibition rooms – located in an old villa – the
museum showcases historic and current developments on
the theme of childhood. The museum also offers countless
possibilities for discovering, trying out and playing. The
special exhibitions provide fascinating insights into the

Museum of Electricity
Kappelerhof Baden Power Station
Numerous pieces of historical technical equipment and
devices from power stations, industrial plants and private
households show how electricity was generated,
transported and used in earlier times. The exhibitions at
the Museum of Electricity are also fascinating for visitors
with no special technical knowledge. The new video and
demonstration room vividly illustrates the various methods

Kirchenschatz-Museum
(Church Treasury Museum)
Above the crypt in the sacristy of Baden’s Catholic parish
church, you will find valuable examples of gold- and silversmithing
dating from the late Middle Ages to the Early
Modern Age. They constitute one of the most important
church treasuries in the canton of Aargau. Visitors can also
view a richly ornate collection of vestments (complete robes
and other liturgical textiles) dating from various centuries.

Teddybär-Museum Baden
(Baden Teddy Bear Museum)
This is a museum that not only makes collectors’ hearts
beat faster. On the three floors of this fanciful house in the
Old Town, hundreds of antique teddy bears are lovingly
exhibited in humorous, lifelike scenes. You can observe
teddy bears baking cakes, in the old village school, at the
doctor’s, on a long journey, and involved in many other
things. The exhibition is enhanced by antique toys and
everyday objects from the last century. Private guided
tours outside opening hours for groups and schools are
particularly popular.

Galleries
Kunstraum Baden (Baden Art Gallery)
The Kunstraum Baden is a public institution located just a
minute away on foot from the Baden West railway station.
It is housed in a former workshop in a listed heritage
building. As a forum for modern art, the Kunstraum Baden
offers a platform for current positions in contemporary art.
The focus is primarily on artists from Switzerland. The
Kunstraum wants to use its exhibitions to raise issues that
extend beyond the borders of art and touch on social and
philosophical matters. Also, the city of Baden has
contracted the Kunstraum Baden to document and
connect the artists living in the Baden region using its own
documentation point. A diverse supporting programme
with tours, discussions with artists and workshops
accompanies these confrontations with art. The KUBIK art
education events were developed especially for children
and youth.

Trudelhaus Baden
Each year, visarte.aargau, the professional association for
visual art, presents four or five exhibitions of contemporary
art from the Aargau region and beyond at the Trudelhaus
Baden. The Trudelhaus is a place for reflection and dialogue
and a meeting place for people who are interested in
art and culture. The display gallery encourages discussion
of current contemporary art themes with a wide-ranging
supporting programme.

Galerie im Gluri Suter Huus
The community gallery in the Gluri Suter Huus was
opened in 1972 with then unknown artist Ilse Weber from
Wettingen. Since then, more than 200 exhibitions of
contemporary art have been held, featuring well-known
names such as Hans Falk, Heinrich Müller, Eduard Spörri,
Eduard Gubler, Gillian White, Anton Egloff, Georg Aerni,
Max Grüter, Barbara Ellmerer, Erwin Rehmann, Vincenzo
Baviera and many more.
Today, the Department of Visual Arts of the Cultural
Commission, under the direction of Christian Greutmann,
is responsible for organising the exhibitions. Every year,
seven exhibitions showcase contemporary works of art
from the region, as well as exhibits of Swiss and
international renown. In addition, permanent exhibitions
display works from the municipal art collection.

International Festival of Magic
The Magic Ring of Switzerland is a network of over 300
magicians and a member of the worldwide Magic Organisation.
Since 2007 it has organised a gala magic performance
at the Kurtheater Baden featuring top international

Germany and Switzerland have already cast their spell on
the Kurtheater. The combination of wizardry, illusion, fantasy

Bluesfestival Baden
The Bluesfestival Baden is one of the greatest highlights of

For the tenth time, Figura has crowned Baden the capital

Theatre
Kurtheater Baden
The Kurtheater Baden is the largest theatre in the canton
of Aargau with modern infrastructure and seating for up to
600. The curated programme features around 50 ambitious
performances of drama, musical theatre and dance, as
well as children’s and youth theatre. The Kurtheater is also
rented out on more than 60 evenings a year for cabaret
and comedy performances, concerts or dialect plays, as
well as events hosted by associations and companies.
The Kurtheater celebrated its 60th anniversary in the
spring of 2012. Once again, 2013 will feature many
highlights such as Italian dance company Aterballetto,
the opera “Manon” by Jules Massenet, Anton Chekhov’s
“The Seagull” and Peter Handke’s new play “Immer noch
Sturm” – voted “Play of the Year 2012” by the specialist
journal “Theater heute”.

Teatro Palino / UnvermeidBAR
This small professional theatre has two stages available,
which are located in houses opposite each other in the
Old Town. The “UnvermeidBAR” theatre café also offers a
music stage. The Teatro Palino’s repertoire mainly features
its own works. With a close connection to the art forms
of circus and variety, the theatre’s productions include
glittering sequins and the smell of sawdust. Besides these
home-grown creations, contemporary authors and classical
plays are also performed, with guest troupes invited
from time to time.
This open-air theatre gives performances in a rotating
cycle and is putting on a grand production as part of the
“Grosser Badener Sommertheater”. Teatro Palino gives
guest performances both in Switzerland and abroad.
The theatre’s season runs from September to May.

ThiK. Theater im Kornhaus
This small theatre with very high standards of quality in
Baden’s Old Town offers cultural events – theatrical
performances, in particular – and fascinating encounters
for all age groups. The ThiK is steeped in tradition. It is
located in the Kornhaus (built in 1511) and has continuously
hosted performances ever since 1953. The theatre
has been professionally managed for more than 20 years.
Not having its own ensemble, it collaborates on an ongoing
basis with other theatre groups and directors in Switzerland,
creating joint productions that raise the profile of
this guest performance theatre. The ThiK is a place where
opinions are formed and ideas are communicated. For
a number of years, PhiloThiK has offered a platform for
discussing socially relevant and topical issues.

Nateschwara Theater
The unique Indian cultural stage.
The Nateschwara Theater was brought into being by Vijaya
Rao in 1997 as a platform for the Nateschwara Dance
Company. As Europe’s first theatre for classic Indian dance
and Indian music, it showcases up-and-coming artists as
well as familiar faces on the local and international Indian

dance and music scene. Original productions by Vijaya
Rao feature most prominently on the playbill. Since its
founding in 1993, the Nateschwara Dance Company has
made a name for itself in India and far beyond Switzerland
as a unique, traditional and authentic Bharata Natyam
dance group. The Nateschwara Theater ranks among the
leading locations for living Indian art and culture in Europe.
It offers seating for more than 90 people in a stimulating
atmos phere. Many performances include an Indian dinner
beforehand, prepared in the theatre’s own kitchen.

Remise Theatre 5406
The theatre in Rütihof started its first season with a
magnificent in-house production in 1991. Significantly, the
play was called “Uf em eigne Mischt gwachse” (“Home-
grown in your backyard”). The former barn was converted
into a magical theatre with a unique atmosphere by
proactive villagers. The smell of manure has given way to
a red velvet curtain. Performances by professional artists
on the stage are financed by in-house productions. The
summer theatre has become a great success.

Stoffwechsel (Metabolism)
Previously located in the vaulted cellar at Cordulaplatz,
Stoffwechsel events currently take place in the former
Kino Royal. The organiser is regarded as being one of the
foremost addresses in the German-speaking world in the
fields of spoken word and performance poetry. The true
greats of the scene perform on stage here, at close
quarters, surrounded by a hungry audience. Nowhere can

poets and speakers, occasional cabaret and short film
festivals, new formats such as “Jukebox Stories” requiring
interaction with the public are tried out and developed
further. Here, each event has its own story and its own

Figurentheater Wettingen
(Puppet Theatre)
This small puppet theatre in the Gluri Suter Huus with the
beautiful vaulted cellar lies in the heart of Wettingen. It has
dedicated itself completely to puppet and object theatre.
Founded as the theatre for the Marionettenbühne
Wettingen, the theatre has since continued to develop and
now offers an entertaining programme with professional
guest performers from Switzerland and abroad. In addition
to numerous plays for the entire family, productions for an
adult audience are also featured occasionally as the
Figurentheater Wettingen shows how diverse and exciting
contemporary puppet theatre can really be. As well as
guest performances, the theatre’s own productions are

Additional theatres
Badener Maske
This amateur theatre was founded in 1945 by five students
in order to breathe fresh life into the city’s theatre scene.
Since then, more than 80 productions have been created
and performed on the Badener Maske’s hallmark stage,
known as the “Thespians’ cart.” Traditionally, productions
are performed on this rolling stage in eastern Switzerland
between the beginning of August and mid-September
every two years, followed by performances in front of loyal
audiences in about 15 locations in the canton of Aargau.
Weather permitting, performances take place in the
open air.

Junges Theater Baden
The Junges Theater Baden (Young Theatre Baden) has
specialised in walking theatre since 2003. A short
tour helps the audience get in the right mood for the
performance to follow. The scenes and images have no
recognisable plot at this point. Next, set pieces from the
section to follow as well as individual characters are
introduced. Architectural elements are purposefully
incorporated into the piece, and the entire surroundings
become an extended part of the set. The ensemble is
deliberately composed of a mixture of newcomers,
experienced performers and trained drama teachers.
The team, with anywhere from 13 to 65 years of life
experience, works hard both onstage and behind the
scenes, displaying great enthusiasm and commitment.

Theaterwerkstatt Boschettli
The Theaterwerkstatt Boschettli is a workshop and
meeting point for creative people, and lives up to its name:
small, colourful and imaginative. The Boschettli is mainly
used as a rehearsal venue and workshop, as well as being
a centre for fairytales, myths and legends told by
storyteller Maria Magdalena Kaufmann. Fairytale readings,
storytelling and comedy evenings open to the public are
held from time to time. The space can also be rented for
aperitifs, discussion groups, exhibitions or readings.

Flamencos en route Dance Company
Combining and confronting unusual perspectives is the
speciality of this renowned dance company from Baden.
Since 1984, choreographer Brigitta Luisa Merki has been
combining flamenco with the most diverse range of artistic
genres and schools of thought – visual arts, contemporary
dance and modern poetry. In her own unique way, she
explores the possibilities of flamenco at the highest level.
She dusts off flamenco, renewing it and bestowing upon it
a place in the high art of contemporary dance. The dance
troupe, made up of outstanding Spanish and Swiss
dancers and musicians, is constantly breaking new ground.

Badener Tanzcentrum (Dance Centre)
The Badener Tanzcentrum has been offering all types of
dance since 1984, including modern aerobics, classical
ballet, jazz, modern dance and ballroom dancing. Every
Friday evening, the Badener Tanzcentrum organises
parties where everyone feels right at home. With air-conditioned
rooms, atmospheric party lighting, a bar with
lounge character, beverages for reasonable prices and a
separate smoking area, this modern dance centre leaves
little to be desired. You can practice and perfect what you
have learned during the dance courses, e.g. salsa,
waltzes, jive, tango and cha-cha-cha. The facility is also
ideal for organising private events such as birthday or
wedding celebrations.

For a whole weekend, from 3 – 5 May 2013, the focus is on
dance in all its facets: Local dance schools display their
talent on the open stage at Bahnhofplatz square, dance
professionals perform in window displays in the city centre
and on the ThiK and Kurtheater stages. Those who feel
inclined have plenty of opportunity to hit the dance floor
themselves during the dance night at the Kurtheater or on
a try-out course.

LiberTango
Tango has found a new home in Baden with LiberTango.
The LiberTango Association promotes Argentinian culture
in the Baden region and organises suitable events. Tango
courses are offered regularly, high-calibre musicians are
invited to give concerts, milongas – traditional tango
dance evenings – are held, and attractive readings are
organised. The focus of all these activities is the overriding
idea of encounters. People of all ages, professional
backgrounds and social classes come together here to
dance and enjoy music and literature – in other words, to
tango together. Since the South American tango was
designated a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in the
autumn of 2009, the worldwide importance of this dance
has been recognised, and the genre has attracted an
increasing number of fans.

Dance studio – performance space – Feldenkrais practice.
The m.a. studio on the lively Oederlin premises offers a
unique platform in Aargau for contemporary dance. It
focuses on the body and movement using courses and

for established and experimental dance companies. It
also puts on its own productions and offers Feldenkrais
classes.

NatMove
Dancing in the baths district – in rooms with modern

photographic laboratory.
NatMove offers a comprehensive programme for dance

The Trafo cinema centre is located in the Baden Nord
district. It boasts five elegantly and innovatively designed

Claquekeller
This atmospheric vaulted cellar with its exclusive location
right on the banks of the river Limmat is ideal for diverse

Isebähnli (Jazz in Baden)
During the winter season, modern jazz is played here every

Jazz in der Aula
For almost 50 years, “Jazz in der Aula” has been presenting
celebrities from the international jazz scene, from Svend
Asmussen to Attila Zoller. They have all performed in the
“Aula” auditorium at one point. The first auditorium that
was used belonged to the cantonal secondary school, but
today the performances are held in the acoustically superior
BBB-Aula at the end of Wiesenstrasse, which belongs to
the vocational school. All of the concerts have the

Trafohalle
Baden’s official town hall is reminiscent of its earlier
role in the city’s industrial past. Where high-voltage
experiments were conducted thirty years ago, a space

Villa Boveri
Villa Boveri was the Baden residence of the family of
Walter Boveri, co-founder of Brown Boveri & Cie. Built
between 1895 and 1897, the house and park are a true
gem, offering an oasis of calm and providing the ideal
setting and infrastructure for training courses, seminars
and social events. The owner of the house, the ABB
Welfare Foundation, also organises various cultural events

Merker-Areal
Merker-Areal premises
In the distinctive “Yellow Square,” where washing
machines and household appliances were once
manufactured, an attractive and centrally-located working
and residential district has emerged. Instead of tearing
down old factory halls and replacing them with new
buildings, the original industrial structure – with historical
and cultural value for the city – was preserved.
Today, around 80 tenants from diverse sectors use the
former factory premises as their professional base. The
Merker-Areal has developed into an urban microcosm, a
centre for architecture, art, communication and services.
Various cultural institutions are represented here, including
the Figura Theatre Festival and the Fantoche International
Animation Film Festival, which have helped turned the
Merker-Areal into a festival hotspot.
The former dispatch building in the centre is now the
unique Speditionsgebäude restaurant, with a bright hall
for events on the first floor. The Stanzerei provides a
further exceptional cultural venue on the premises.
The spacious area of the inner courtyard of the “Yellow
Square” was covered with a colourful “woven carpet”
created by artist Beat Zoderer, AZ-award winner 2009,
breathing fresh life into the courtyard.
Merkker Kulturlokal Baden
Merkker – bar, restaurant & culture – is a cultural centre
supported by the Youth Work department of the city of
Baden. Concerts and parties here range from pop, punk,
rock, indie, and singer-songwriter to funk, world music,
hip-hop, reggae, dancehall and electro. Individual
readings, theatre productions and exhibitions also
supplement the programme at Merkker. The pub offers
reasonable and delicious meals at noon.
From May to September, the Merkker team also operates
Triebguet, a lush open-air bar directly on the river Limmat.

Braun – Design Collections
As a follow-up to the “Bauhaus” style, appliance
manufacturer Braun revolutionised industrial products
in the 1950s. Regardless of which utilitarian object is
involved, the Braun company was behind the simple,
self-explanatory design. Prof. Dieter Rams, head designer,
had this to say: “My goal is to remove anything superfluous
so that the essential comes to the forefront.” This was
reason enough for Joan and Rolf Billing to gather all these
objects together and make them accessible to the public.

Trafo
Convention Center Trafo Baden
Where once electrical transformers were manufactured,
now conferences, presentations and celebrations are held.
Accessible from Zurich in only 16 minutes by rail and
3 minutes on foot, the Trafo Baden centre is a great venue
for medium-sized and large companies and a success
factor for your events. Just as consumers are becoming
increasingly demanding, so conference participants expect
a wider range of services. Alongside input in the form of
talks and presentations, face-to-face meetings are once
again becoming ever more important. The individual
programme points change as required since cinema
presentations, group work, voting by SMS, top-class
buffet lunches and good personal exchanges are all part
of the successful conference of the future.
All this is possible under a single roof at the Trafo Baden
centre. Companies such as Hewlett-Packard and
Raiffeisen Bank hold large-scale events here. They
appreciate the state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexibility,
unique design and good links with the airport, rail system
and motorway. The Trafo centre is also much praised
for the quality of dishes served, which are prepared in
house, and for the cordiality of the team. In 2012, Baden’s
Trafo centre hosted 259 events with an average of 250
and a total of 64,535 guests. The new construction
project with hotel, restaurant and apartments, which
began on 1 October 2012, represents a further milestone
in the history of the Trafo Baden centre.

New exhibits at Axporama
Axporama is the Axpo visitors’ centre at Schloss Böttstein and is currently
hosting the exhibition entitled “Living with Energy”. Many interesting facts about
the environment and energy are displayed on the centre’s two floors. Visitors
can learn more about humans as consumers of energy, assume the role of an
energy manager and feel the power of wind and sun in the “Climate Theatre”.
The pros and cons of different forms of energy production are clearly explained,
and there are numerous hands-on experiments, both indoors and outdoors.
You can also explore the new “3D-Relief Switzerland” and “Geological Underground
Repositories” interactive exhibits.
Free admission for individuals and families. Free guided tours of Axporama
and the Beznau hydroelectric and nuclear plant can be organised with advance
notice.

Baden’s public library was founded in 1836. Today, it is
a fundamental go-to point for the city and region when
it comes to education, encounters, culture and leisure.
Readings with interesting authors are organised on
a regular basis as well as a wide range of events for
children and adults and programmes for school classes.
Appropriate books for every age and taste can be found
in German, French, Italian, Spanish and English among
the approximately 65,000 media. The offering also includes
local, national, and international newspapers and
magazines, a spacious film, music and audio book section,
as well as language courses and the latest bestsellers.
Children’s books are also available here in Albanian,
Croatian, Serbian and Tamil. The library offers a quiet
zone with workstations for students and studying on the
first floor and has an active zone with a kids’ corner and
youth area on the ground floor. The current selection of
open-stack books and non-books are supplemented with
the Badensia collection of magazines, while the valuable
rarities are stored in the Baden city archives. Internet
and multimedia stations, colour photocopiers, WLAN
and lockers supplement the range of media on offer. The
online catalogue lists the entire library collection as well as
electronic reference works, and can be accessed at
www.stadtbibliothek.baden.ch. There is a suitable
subscription for every age and for every type of medium.
The library also offers trial subscriptions or individual loans
for newcomers.
