OBH PrOPOses Late Deer Hunt In ne OregOn Craig starr, 2nd VP Bowhunting & Legislation Hopefully, most OBH members know by now that ODFW has eliminated general season deer hunting in the Wenaha, Walla Walla and Mt. Emily units for 2013 and beyond as part of an overall strategy for controlling the poaching of branch bull elk during archery season by individuals without the required controlled hunt elk tag. The impact on deer hunting was adopted at the October Commission meeting as part of ODFW’s move to control spike elk hunting in the units. Beginning with the 2013 season, the only bowhunters allowed to hunt deer during the general archery season in those units (and the Chesnimnus and Sled Springs units which already had the restriction) will be individuals who have drawn a controlled elk tag. At the Commission meeting where the ODFW proposal was adopted, www.sylvanarchers.org the Oldest established club in the state of Oregon FoundEd in 0 shoot schEdulE OBH argued against the restriction on deer hunting on the basis that the five (5) northeast units where the restriction would be in place make up a very substantial part of that area of Oregon where bowhunters were able to realistically pursue a Whitetail Deer with a general archery deer tag. Although they went ahead and adopted the ODFW proposal, some members of the Commission expressed a concern about its impact on archery deer hunting opportunity in northeast Oregon. In an effort to make up for some of the hunting opportunity lost as a result of the recent ODFW action, OBH has submitted a formal proposal to the Commission for establishment of a late season controlled deer hunt in the area where the general season opportunity has now been restricted. Because the proposed hunt would be on a different schedule, it could occur without the concern for poaching of branch bulls during a concurrent season like our general season. OBH has had some informal indication that ODFW will propose some form of a late season archery deer hunt in northeast Oregon when they present proposed regulatory changes next Spring (generally in May) . Unfortunately, any ODFW action to offset the loss of general season archery deer hunting opportunity in the northeast Oregon units almost certainly won’t occur until at least 2014. OBH will be monitoring the ODFW proposals when they come out and will be looking for a late season archery hunting opportunity that makes up for the hunting opportunity lost as a result of the recent ODFW action impacting bowhunters who hunt deer in the northeast Oregon units.
