centenary cricket
The cricket committee marked
the Pall Mall centenary with a
match at Lord’s followed by
dinner at the club with guest
speaker Graham Thorpe
(ex-England batsman). A
Centenary Chairman’s XI
battled The Autocrats in a game
with seven England Test Players
including two current England
Ladies. The Autocrats ran out
narrow winners in the last over
thanks mainly to DeFreitas’
explosive batting. The club’s
Malcolm Lea was named Man of
the Match. To get involved in club
Perfect Putting
Putting is without doubt
the most important, yet
most neglected, part of golf.
Here, club golf professional
Will Murray gives his tips
for perfect putting.
1 Keep eyes over the ball,
with feet shoulder width
apart and weight forward
toward the toes.
2 Push the backside out to
counterbalance, and grip
the putter with the lightest
amount of pressure possible,
rocking the shoulders back
and through.
3 The idea is to stroke, not
hit, the ball with the putter.
Although this sounds
Club Sport
obvious, it is actually where
most people go wrong and a
common reason for lack of
distance control.
4 Alignment is also an
important factor. Most golf
balls on the market have a
line on the seam but, if not,
with a steady hand use a
black marker and follow the
seam, drawing a thin line
approximately one inch
long on the ball. Use this
mark to line your ball up
with your chosen borrow,
keeping the putter head
perfectly inline with the ball
when putting.
Good luck!
