Island trips run nine days in
length, providing 5 full and one
half day of diving.
When weather conditions
are favorable, the Solmar V will
often cross over to Roca Partida
to spend a day or two taking in
the slender spire of rock in the
middle of nowhere’s hot pelagic
action. Due to the Solmar V’s
increased fuel efficiency enables
it to be one of the only vessels
currently NOT asking guests to
pay a fuel surcharge.
The Solmar V has a large crew,
and all of them, from Captain
Gerrardo to jack-of-all-trades,
Francisco, are conscientious,
accommodating and friendly.
Chef Pedro prepares wonderful
meals. Besides coffee and tea,
breakfast always features a large
platter of fresh fruit — including
melons, papaya and kiwi fruit —
along with yogurt, cereal, pan dulce
(Mexican sweet breads) and juice.
Eggs with toast and, depending on
the day, hash browns, bacon, ham
or sausage, were also offered.
There are always homemade
soups for lunch. The entrée might
be cheeseburgers and fries or
grilled chicken breasts or fish fillets,
usually with vegetables (broccoli,
squash, cauliflower) steamed al
dente. There was always a luscious
dessert, too.
Dinners start with a salad of
fresh vegetables and included a
variety of entrees - fish, chicken,
shrimp, pork chops or steak —
along with fresh vegetables and
perhaps rice or mashed potatoes.
The desserts, from a bakery in
Cabo, are suitably delicious:
cheesecake, pies, and cakes. Beer
and wine are included in the cost
of the trip and several times a
week, specialty drinks, such as
margaritas and tequila sunrises
are offered. The only complaint I
heard about any of the meals was
