REGIONS The Eastern Cape area was previously divided into four tourism regions, namely the Western/Tsitsikamma Region, the Northern Region, the Central/Amatola Region and the Wild Coast Region. In 2000, however, the Eastern Cape Province was restructured into two major metropolitan areas: the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality and the Buffalo City area, as well as several municipal districts under the jurisdiction of six District Municipalities: Cacadu District Municipality (Western/Tsitsikamma region) Ukhahlamba District Municipality (Northern region) Chris Hani District Municipality (Northern region: Stormberg, Cradock to Queenstown area) Amatola District Municipality (Central/Amatola region) Oliver Tambo District Municipality (Wild Coast region from the Mbashe River to the Mtamvuna River) Alfred Nzo District Municipality (Wild Coast region: Matatiele/Mount Fletcher area) - 17 -

It borders the Great Addo Elephant National Park, Groendal Wilderness area and the Van Stadensberg Mountain Range. The area has been identified as a national and global priority area for biodiversity conservation as it is the meeting place of six of South Africa’s seven vegetation biomes. The metropolis is also the centre of the largest wool- and mohair-farming area in South Africa. The “Garden Route”, South Africa’s most famous scenic highway links the Nelson Mandela Metropolis to Cape Town in the Western Cape province. It currently falls under the jurisdiction of the Amatola District Municipality but is awaiting confirmation of its status as the area’s second Metropolitan Municipality. Buffalo City is strategically located on the Sunshine Coast and Wild Coast Routes in the Amatola region with its spectacular beaches, mountains, waterfalls and rivers. It offers excellent sporting and recreational facilities and friendly hospitality. However, this area has also been identified as an economic growth point and East London has been singled out as an industrial development zone. - 18 -
