HARBOUR TOWAGE IN VOLCANO TOWN
Prior to the devastating eruptions in 1994, of Mount Tavurvur
and Mount Vulcan on either side of Rabaul Harbour, East New
Britain Province in Papua New Guinea, the town of Rabaul was
a beautiful and thriving regional centre oft referred to as the
Pearl of the Pacific. The deepwater harbour, itself being an
extinct caldera was busy with the local and international trade
particularly in Copra, Coconut Oil, Timber, Tuna Export and all
import and exports for this once thriving community. Since
1994 the main infrastructure of Rabaul has been moved to the
new town of Kokopo some 25 kms away, with Rabaul town
being under up to 2 metres of ash and the old airport under 4
metres, however the deep water port at Rabaul remains in
constant use as there is no other natural Harbour available.
2/19
12 TH VOLUME, NO. 36 DATED 11 SEPTEMBER 2010
Vulcan has stopped erupting, however Tavurvur remains very active with constant ash
discharges for eight of the last ten years. Ships still need to come and go and Pacific Towing
(PNG) Ltd continues to support the port operations with generally two tugs constantly on
station for Harbour Duties and Salvage activities. In these conditions of constant ash fall and
sulphurous discharges it is quite common during the SE Monsoon winds to need to sweep and
shovel ash twice daily, whilst during extreme eruptions the harbour also becomes infected with
pumice stone discharges, which being close to neutrally buoyant have a happy knack of
finding every sea chest available. Air Filters are cleared daily and gritty food only aids the
digestion we’re told! Working in face masks and with an optimistic outlook is the only way to
get by in these conditions. Such is the life of a tug-man in this part of the world. Presently the
tugs Turanguna (33 tonne BP),
Kairiru, (12 tonne BP) and Wanilla
(6 tonne BP) are positioned in Rabaul
doing their stint of Dusty Duties. With
separate volcanic activity in Kimbe
port some miles away, this part of the
‘Pacific Rim’s Ring of Fire’ remains a
challenging environment for harbour
towage with the only positive spin-off
being the ever increasing numbers of
cruise liners including Queen Mary 2,
keen to get a first-hand look and a feel
of Papua New Guinea’s Volcano
Town. (Source & Photo’s: Ian
TUG TOWED BARGES TO THE BAY OF BISCAY
In the morning of Sep 5, 2011,
at 8:30, the "Courbet" lost two
barges 80 miles south of
Penmarc'h. The tow consisted
of two barges bound from
Rotterdam to Lagos, the
"Vestland" measuring 90m x
10m and the "Atlantic Trader"
measuring 109m x12m. The
captain first announced that
he mastered the situation and
would be able to retrieve the
barges. Later the "Abeille
Bourbon" was alarmed and a
plane provided aerial surveillance to assess the drift of both barges. At 6.30 p.m. it was decided to
take the "Vestland" in tow by the "Abeille Bourbon". The towing started at 7.25 p.m., but the barge
sank at 8:10 on a water depth of 2000 m. The barge was containing 7m3 of diesel fuel. The drift of
the "Atlantic Barge" was monitored. (Source: Vesseltracker; Photo: Courbet is seen departing from
Rotterdam on the 1 st of September credited by Hans Hoffmann) Update Correction on the above:
The tug Courbet was tasked only to tow both tankbarges Vestland and Atlantic Trader from
Rotterdam into the Bay of Biscay, from there both barges were going to proceed under own power
to Lagos/Nigeria. A few hours after disconnecting Vestland and Atlantic Trader, Courbet was asked
to return back to Vestland as it was starting to break up, soon after the 3 man crew of Vestland was
rescued, she broke up in 2 parts which stayed afloat, Courbet informed MRCC Etel that she would
stay stand-by casualty in order to minimize pollution and trying to tow the 2 halves into Brest but
on the 5th of September pm the aft part sank and in the in the early hours of the 7th September
the forepart sank as well. Atlantic Trader proceeding under own power towards Lagos/Nigeria.
PHOENIX GOES TO WATERY GRAVE AS SELI 1 BELCHES OIL ONTO
BEACH
After almost 40 days of being
held firmly on the rocks of
Sheffield Beach, the tanker
Phoenix finally came off thanks
to the efforts of two tugs, SMIT
Amandla and SMIT Siyunda
which pulled her clear shortly
after 7am on Saturday morning, 3
August. As the ship crashed
through the swells and breakers
the tugs began the haul to a predetermined
position 78km
offshore and southeast of Durban
where she was to be scuttled in
about 2,000m of water. Altogether the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) spent
about R35 million on getting the shipwreck off the beach. It had already been decided that the ship
had to be scuttled, as a 2m wide gash in her hull in the engine room was considered not repairable
at sea (the local ports of Durban and Richards Bay had already refused the ship entry). It was
considered doubtful whether the tugs would even be able to get the ship as far as the selected
scuttling point and several alternate sites closer inshore were selected in case they were necessary.
In the event they weren’t. While the Phoenix drama was playing itself out to a satisfactory ending
off the KZN North Coast, the wreck of the bulker Seli 1 off the beach near Bloubergstrand was
belching oil into the sea and onto the neighbouring beaches as the ship broke up further. Seli 1
went aground two years ago after the Turkish bulker, which earlier had loaded a cargo of coal at
Durban and was headed for Gibraltar, experienced engine trouble and came to anchor in Table Bay
while engineers on board the ship attempted to complete repairs. During heavy seas the ship
dragged her anchors and went ashore, resisting subsequent attempts to refloat her. In a dramatic
rescue, members of the NSRI rescued all the crew safely (three NSRI members later received IMO
commendations at a ceremony held in London – see that report NSRI coxswain and crew honoured
by IMO). It is not clear how much oil remains in the Seli 1 and how much has been spilled. Local
authorities immediately went to work to clear up the beaches. (Source: Ports & Ships Maritime
