Emily
MICHAEL BEDARD
ILLUSTRATED BY BARBARA COONEY
IN A YELLOW house surrounded by a tall hedge in Amherst, Massachusetts,
lives a woman who hasn’t left its grounds in nearly 20 years. Even when she
invites visitors, she stays out of sight. People call her “the Myth.”
Yet the young girl who lives across the street knows something more about
this secretive woman. One day her mother goes to play the piano at the
yellow house, and the girl joins her. When no one is looking, the girl goes
upstairs and sees the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson. Their unexpected
meeting results in an exchange of very special gifts.
Michael Bedard has written several books for children, including the
biography William Blake: The Gates of Paradise. He has also written novels for
older children, the most recent of which is Stained Glass. Michael Bedard’s
extensive research while he was writing Emily took him to Emily Dickinson’s
home in Amherst. He lives in Toronto, Canada, with his family.
Barbara Cooney’s many books for children include Miss Rumphius, which
received the American Book Award, and two Caldecott Medal winners, Ox-
Cart Man, by Donald Hall, and Chanticleer and the Fox, which she wrote herself.
Barbara Cooney also traveled to Amherst to do research and to sketch the
Dickinson Homestead and the Kingman home across the street.
