Our pioneering vision
Lens know-how
You’ll experience our 75-year optical heritage in every Canon lens.
Our name is synonymous with imaging innovation and we
continually evolve ever-more compact optics that produce
ever-greater clarity and sharpness.
The lenses in Canon’s digital compact cameras share many of the
same design and manufacturing processes that are used to develop
our professional broadcast and EF lens range. A range trusted by
millions of professionals around the world.
Use of UA and
UD lens elements
contributes
significantly to
size reduction
and the higher
performance
of cameras
Advanced performance optics
From Canon’s first 50x zoom of the PowerShot SX50 HS to the f/1.8
aperture of the PowerShot G15, Canon’s advanced performance range
represents the very best in compact lens technology and quality.
The use of special lens materials such as UA (Ultra high refractive index
Aspherical) and UD (Ultra low Dispersion) lenses contribute significantly
to size reduction and higher performance of Canon’s compact cameras,
enabling compactness without compromising on image quality. Each
camera benefits from having a fixed retractable lens with a practical
zoom range that’s ideal for capturing a range of subjects.
Focus and zoom mechanisms are also continuously evolving. For the
PowerShot G15, Canon developed a focusing-lens unit that shifts
independently. By further optimising the mechanism and AF
algorithm, the focusing drive speed is approximately 6.3-times faster
than the PowerShot G12 to create accurate AF which is the fastest in
Canon history*
PowerShot G and S series cameras have an optical 3-stop ND filter
built into the lens so you can shoot using wider apertures in bright
light or achieve a slower shutter speed – to capture the movement of
water seascapes for example – giving you real range of creative
freedom and expression.
A clear vision
Each camera includes a highly effective optical Image Stabilizer (IS)
to combat blur from camera shake. It uses tiny vibration gyros to
detect camera movements, and shifts an optical element in the lens
to counteract the movement of the camera - by up to 4.5-stops in the
PowerShot SX50 HS. In effect, this means you can shoot at a shutter
speed 4.5-stops slower than would otherwise be necessary to obtain
a sharp shot.
Each model includes Intelligent IS which selects the best IS mode to
correct different types of camera shake. For example, all models
feature Hybrid IS: a technology first used in the Canon EF 100mm
f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens to correct the vertical ‘shift-shake’, which
most likely occurs during Macro photography at close distances.
Alternatively, when using the zoom while shooting movies, Powered IS
corrects exaggerated movements that can occur when using the full
extent of the zoom.
Even though these cameras are compact in size they’re designed
to give superb image quality and perform in a range of conditions
including low light.
It’s the combination of lens, sensor and processor that decides the
image quality and Canon combines its leading optical technology
with the HS System (the combination of DIGIC processing and a
high-sensitivity sensor) to achieve market-leading image quality.
Canon HS System:
Delivering premium quality
Canon CMOS sensor technology
Large, optimised micro lenses. Enhances high ISO performance
High-sensitivity sensors
and DIGIC processing
The PowerShot S110 and G15 both use
1/1.7 type high-sensitivity sensors, which
perform well in a range of conditions,
including low light. The PowerShot G1 X sensor, at 18.7x14mm, with
a surface area approximately 6.3x larger still, is specifically designed
to offer best-in-range low light performance and image quality.
Image sensors with a larger surface area allow for individual pixels
to be larger, and so are more efficient at gathering light. Combined
with Canon’s powerful DIGIC processing this leads to improved
low light performance with the ability to use a higher ISO setting
without encountering high levels of image noise. The Canon CMOS
sensors included in the PowerShot G and S series incorporate sensor
technologies that feature in our EOS range. On-chip noise reduction
eliminates unwanted noise at time of capture while an optimised
micro lens configuration ensures maximum light gathering efficiency.
Without HS System
Low-light shooting made easy
All four cameras give you fine control over ISO settings in 1/3rd stop
increments – the PowerShot S110 allows this via the quick and easy
to use lens Control Ring, while the PowerShot G15 and G1 X have
a shortcut on the rear multi-control dial. They all give you the
flexibility to set the maximum ISO level on the Auto ISO setting
(up to ISO 1600) and control over noise reduction in-camera.
DIGIC Imaging Processor – the brain
inside every Canon digital camera
The DIGIC processor ensures high image quality with
accurate colours, quick autofocus and low noise. All four
cameras use the newly-evolved DIGIC 5 processor, enabling
High-Speed Burst HQ mode which allows you to capture splitsecond
action with a burst of shots over a short amount of time.
Full HD Movies
As well as shooting stills, all cameras feature the ability to capture
Full HD (1080p) high definition movies with stereo sound and an
HDMI output port for easy, high quality playback via HDTV displays.
With the option to shoot in the RAW file format or RAW and JPEG together,
you’ll be able to exercise even greater control and freedom when editing.
The supplied Digital Photo Professional Software is extremely powerful
and allows you to do basic image editing as well as change the white
balance, exposure, contrast and noise reduction at the touch of a button.
The PowerShot S110 features a lens Control Ring and a capacitive
touch screen that puts you in full control of the camera, while the
PowerShot G15 and G1 X both have front and rear multi-control
dials which support the fine adjustments that turn a good shot into
a great one. The PowerShot SX50 HS has a rear multi-control dial
to adjust settings and a Zoom Framing Assist button on the lens so
you can keep subjects easily in the frame while using the zoom.
The incredible 24-1200mm reach of the
huge 50x optical zoom delivers superb shots
of everything from long-range close-ups of
wildlife to sweeping landscapes. Zooming is
fast and near silent thanks to an Ultrasonic
Motor and you can easily keep track of your
subject with enhanced Zoom Framing Assist.
A Lock button engages the Image Stabilizer
to keep the subject static, while pressing
the Seek button quickly zooms the camera
out of the scene – so you can relocate a
subject – zooming it back in on release.
Even shots taken at full zoom will be
sharp and clear thanks to a 4.5-stop
optical Image Stabilizer with Intelligent IS,
which counteracts camera shake.
The 7 available Image Stabilizer modes
include Dynamic IS, which delivers steady
Full HD movies by compensating for rolling
motion plus conventional camera shake.
Manual modes allow you to choose
you own exposure settings and you can
shoot in RAW format with multi-aspect
shooting support – so you can take full
creative control of your images from
composition to post-shot editing.
