Part 2. C<strong>on</strong>figure Java <str<strong>on</strong>g>Applicati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>on</strong> <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong><br />

In this part we describe the minimum c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> you need <strong>on</strong> <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong> to run<br />

Java client/server applicati<strong>on</strong>s. Within the c<strong>on</strong>text of this book we assume that you<br />

will need a Webserver <strong>on</strong> <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong>.<br />

Of course, you can also build applicati<strong>on</strong>s by means of your own Java applicati<strong>on</strong><br />

server <strong>on</strong> <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong> that handles the traffic with the clients and the access to files,<br />

databases and transacti<strong>on</strong>s, but the Webserver will give you many standard<br />

features that you otherwise would have to take care of yourself.<br />

The latest versi<strong>on</strong> of WebAS supports both servlets and JavaServer Pages. You<br />

can call Beans from servlets and JSPs that can do anything a regular Java<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> could do.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> for the Webserver is described in Chapter 4, “C<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong> Web Server” <strong>on</strong> page 29.<br />

In this part we also describe the c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> for the latest versi<strong>on</strong> of VisualAge for<br />

Java: VisualAge for Java, Enterprise Editi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong>. VisualAge for Java,<br />

Enterprise Editi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong> goes bey<strong>on</strong>d the workstati<strong>on</strong> and adds new features<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong>. This gives you a true cross-platform development envir<strong>on</strong>ment for<br />

Java specifically supporting the <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong> developer.<br />

5.2, “VisualAge for Java, Enterprise Editi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong>” <strong>on</strong> page 58 describes the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> of the <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong>-related comp<strong>on</strong>ents and Chapter 6, “C<strong>on</strong>figuring<br />

VisualAge for Java <strong>on</strong> the Workstati<strong>on</strong>” <strong>on</strong> page 71 gives you all the details you<br />

need in order to set up the workstati<strong>on</strong> to use the <strong>OS</strong>/<strong>390</strong> features, called ET/<strong>390</strong>.<br />
