Aquatics Manager
AZUSA - The City of Azusa
Recreation and Family Services
Department Aquatics Program
hosted its "Korporate Kardboard
Kayak Challenge" on Saturday,
July 28. Held at the Azusa Aquatics
Center-James Slauson Community
Pool, teams from local
businesses including three
teams from "Waste Management"
and "The Advertising
Specialists" (TAS), as well as
"Azusa's Golden Days Committee"
competed to build and race
kayaks that they made from
cardboard, plywood, foam
noodles and duct tape.
The teams, as well as "Jan's
Towing" donated to the Azusa
Aquatics Program, where funds
will go to new equipment for
its swimming lesson and swim
team programs. The five teams
had 2 hours to construct their
kayak, each with a unique approach
to the assembly of their
kayak. Each vessel was adorned
with personal touches to intimidate
their opponents, which
ranged from a shark shaped
kayak with vicious looking teeth
by the Azusa Golden Day's
Committee, to a "Catch My
Bubbles" plaque placed on one
of the three Waste Management
kayaks that were built.
Teams were treated to lunch,
sponsored by "Jersey Mike's"
and "Pepsi" before they set sail.
Each team paraded proudly
around the deck holding their
kayaks high above their heads
for spectators to see. The brave
volunteer chosen from each
team to race their kayak, carefully
stepped into their craft and
breathed a sigh of relief when
their construction held upon
placement into the water, then
anxiously awaited the sound of
the gun to start the race.
It was a quick defeat for two
teams (WM 2 and TAS) as their
kayaks quickly succumbed to
the water, while the other three
teams fought hard to row their
kayaks twenty-five meters
across the pool, turn and row
back. With each stroke of their
oar supporters, spectators and
teammates cheered for their
kayak to make it to the end. Ultimately,
team 3 came in third.
The race was followed by
